Holmes Scores First Career Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car Win At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 8...Tanner Holmes won his first career 25 lap Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Just a few weeks earlier, Holmes finished second in the first ever Week Of Speed Series. Holmes finished second in the six lap Scramble and used his outside front row starting position to lead every lap of the Main Event for the impressive win.

The Sprint Cars had two eight lap heat races, and Holmes won his race ahead of 2009 division champion Charlie Thompson. Past Cottage Grove champion Hedge Carter won the other heat race in front of Merissa Henson. The Top 3 finishers in each heat race ran a six lap Scramble to set the first three rows of the Main Event, and Thompson won that race ahead of Holmes. Aaron Miller arrived after the heat races, and Holmes charged into the early lead in the Main Event, followed by Thompson and Bailey Hibbard. A lap two red flag waved when Blaine Corey and Jeffrey Hudson tangled exiting Turn 2 and flipped to end the race for both drivers. Holmes continued to lead Thompson and Bailey Hibbard on the restart. Steve Thompson spun in Turn 3 for a lap eight caution flag. Holmes continued to set the pace when racing resumed ahead of Charlie Thompson and Hibbard, but Thompson suddenly pitted into the infield off the front stretch on lap 18 as Bailey Hibbard was now second ahead of Carter. Holmes set a rapid pace for the victory. Bailey Hibbard used his second place finish to move into the third in the standings. Carter would finish third, followed by new division champion and David Hibbard, Henson, TJ Winningham, Enrique Jaime, Steve Thompson, Charlie Thompson and Miller.

Though David Hibbard has the championship locked up, there is still a three-car battle for second. The Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars return for Championship Night #2 on September 22nd, along with the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks and OTRO Hardtops.  For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Foote Wins Second Late Model Main Event
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 8...Dave Foote scored his second 20 lap Late Model Main Event win Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. He picked up a heat race win earlier in the evening and used his front row starting position to deny Bob Dees a potential clean sweep. The win keeps Foote in contention for a Top 3 position heading into this week's point finale for the division.

Foote started his evening by holding off Josh Sim to win his six lap heat race. Bob Dees won the other heat ahead of Miles Deubert. Bob Dees held off Foote to win the four lap Trophy Dash. Dees and Foote shared the front row of the Main Event, and Foote charged into the lead at the start of what would be a non-stop race. Bob Dees settled into second ahead of Miles Deubert. Dave Everson began to smoke just a little bit and pitted on lap seven. By lap 10, Foote held a straightaway advantage over Bob Dees, and Deubert used a low pass in Turn 4 of the 12th lap to take second. Dees began to fall off the pace a little bit as a Sim passed him in Turn 4 for third on 15. On lap 17, championship contender John Dees made the pass on his father for fourth, and point leader Nathan Augustine was in fifth a lap later. Foote maintained a straightaway advantage by the waving of the checkered flag. Deubert kept his championship hopes alive with a second place finish, followed by Sim, John Dees, Bob Dees, Everson and Mike Linder.

The Late Models return this Saturday night to headline a five division program. The Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars are back for their season finale. Also on the card will be the Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks, JOAT Labs Hornets and Valley Store All Late Model Lites. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Steele Clinches Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Championship
With Ninth Win At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 8...David Steele clinched the Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock championship with his ninth 20 lap Main Event win Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. All he needed to do was take the green flag to assure himself the championship, but Steele would use his front row starting position to lead every lap of the Main Event in victory.

Steele won his six lap heat race ahead of rookie Ashtin Hedges, and 2014 champion Gary Andersen outran Hunter Magnan to win the second heat race. Anderson continued his momentum by holding off Steele to win the four lap Trophy Dash. Steele and Anderson shared the front row of the Main Event, and Steele charged into the lead ahead of Magnan and Anderson. A lap one red flag waved after contact between newcomer Scott Yerges and Garrett Fredrickson on the frontstretch sent Fredrickson into the front wall. Steele led the restart before another quick yellow flag flew on lap two. Steele led Magnan and Anderson on the restart. An inside pass on the frontstretch of the fourth lap gained Steve Goetz the third position as Steele began to pull away from Magnan. By lap nine, Steele held a straightaway advantage on Magnan, and Hedges used an inside pass on lap 13 to take fourth from Anderson. Fredrickson stalled on the track moments after the white flag waved, and a yellow flag soon followed. Steele would not be deterred as he led the final lap for the impressive victory. Magnan used his fourth second place finish to put himself in a good position to finish second in the standings. Goetz took the checkered flag in third, followed by Hedges, Anderson, Michael McLeod, Yerges, Fredrickson and Kristopher Mix.

Wonsyld Dominates In Third JOAT Labs Hornets Win
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 8...Brandyn Wonsyld won his third 20 lap JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. The win gave him a better hold on third in the standings. He set a rapid pace in the non-stop event and won by over half a lap ahead of a season-best second place finish for Dylan Sauer.

Jenna Hedges won the first six lap heat race ahead of Wonsyld. Sauer won his heat race ahead of championship hopeful Tim Hedges. Dylan Irving outran Wonsyld for his division-leading fourth four lap Trophy Dash win. Jenna Hedges led the first two laps of the Main Event, and Wonsyld slipped past Sauer for second on lap two. An inside pass on the front stretch of the third lap gained Wonsyld the lead, and he steadily pulled away from the pack from there. Jenna Hedges held second, but Sauer got past her in traffic on lap 13. By then, Wonsyld held a half a lap advantage. Wonsyld was never really threatened as he scored the convincing victory ahead of Sauer, Jenna Hedges and Irving. Point leader Bree Tritchler was lapped late, and she carries a seven point advantage over Tim Hedges into the season finale after her fifth place finish. Chris Boynton finished sixth, followed Tim Hedges, Jenia Silva and John Ferreira.

Aos Wins Second Valley Store All Late Model Lites Main Event At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 8...Taking the lead when Lee Doty suddenly pitted during a lap seven caution period, Eric Aos went on to win his second 15 lap Valley Store All Late Model Lites Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Charlie Eaton used his third place finish to clinch the division championship.

Doty won the six lap heat race ahead of Aos and held off Eaton to win the four lap Trophy Dash. Doty seemed headed for a clean sweep as he led the race from the start, followed by Eric Aos. Eaton settled into third, but Dusty Aos took the position from him with a low pass in Turn 2 of the fifth lap. A lap seven caution flag flew for Greg Arnold in Turn 4. Doty suddenly headed for the pits during the caution period, handing the lead to Eric Aos. Eric Aos led the restart, but Dusty Aos hit a tractor tire off of the backstretch for a lap eight caution flag to end his race. Eric Aos led Eaton and Arnold on the restart. A low pass in Turn 3 of the 11th lap gained Arnold second from Eaton. By lap 15, Eric Aos held a straightaway advantage in his winning performance. Arnold was second, followed by Eaton, Dusty Aos and Lee Doty.

Champions Crowned Friday Night
At Little Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 7...Friday night brought a close to the 2018 Outlaw Kart championship season at little Southern Oregon Speedway. 2017 champion Trevor Grimes picked up his fourth 20 lap 250 Kart Main Event win, but Vinny DeBenedetti used a second place finish to win the division championship. Grimes picked up wins in both heat races and led two laps of the Main Event before a Turn 4 pass gained Taylor Fuller the lead. Fuller held the point until lap nine when Grimes and Fuller got together and crashed in Turn 4. The race was over for Fuller, and Blake Boshart had the lead on the restart. Grimes moved past DeBenedetti for second on the back stretch on lap 13. Grimes brushed the Turn 2 wall, and moments later DeBenedetti spun in Turn 2 for a caution flag. Boshart continued to lead Grimes on the restart, and Grimes made an inside pass in Turn 3 to gain the lead before Boshart spun in Turn 4. Grimes led the rest of the way with DeBenedetti chasing him in second. Boshart settled for third ahead of Fuller.

Lori Fuller won both of the heat races and the 12 lap UAS Speedway Kart Main Event to overtake the absent Steve Rambo for the division championship. Fuller had been enjoying a good battle with Ken Gaines all night as Gaines would continue to run the outside in an effort to get past her. In the Main Event, Lori Fuller set the early pace ahead of Larry Fuller. Gaines made a Turn 4 pass on Larry Fuller on lap five to take over second. Larry Fuller pitted on lap nine as Gaines continued to challenge Lori Fuller all the way to the checkered flag. However, Lori Fuller prevailed for her second feature win of the season. Gaines settled for second ahead of Larry Fuller.

Kenny Boardman won a heat race and the 15 lap 500 Open Kart Main Event. The wins enabled him to win the division championship. Boardman led the race from the start ahead of Bailey Sucich. Sucich spun in Turn 4 for a lap four caution flag. Sucich was having a challenging time handling her kart throughout the race as Boardman set a rapid pace for the victory. Sucich still got it to the finish line in second.

Ryan Hirschbock won both heat races and the 12 lap Box Stock Main Event. Hirshbock did all he could in his bid to overtake Keaton Augustine in the point battle, but Augustine used second place finishes in all of the races to wrap up his division championship. The third Main Event win of the season for Hirschbock tied him with Augustine on the Winner's List.

Carson Henson won his first 10 lap Beginners Box Stock Main Event. He led the race from the start and used his finish to wrap up the division championship. Henson and 2017 champion Malachi Johnson each won heat races, and Johnson was a race long second in the Main Event as Albert Gill Jr finished third.

Jayme DeBenedetti won the 10 lap Novice Box Stock Main Event. Both DeBenedetti and new division champion Bhaltair Edwards won heat races. DeBenedetti led the Main Event from the start. Edwards finished second ahead of Isaac Grimes.

This race brought an end to the 2018 season. The Top 5 drivers in points in the 250 Karts, Speedway Karts, Box Stocks and Beginners Box Stocks received trophies at the end of the night. Championship Night #1 Set For Saturday Night
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...The first of two championship nights is set for this Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Five divisions will be ending their 2018 season, headlined by the Late Models along with Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars, Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks, JOAT Labs Hornets and Valley Store All Late Model Lites.

The Late Model battle is between reigning champion Nathan Augustine, John Dees and rookie Miles Deubert. Augustine, who has won two Main Events this year, leads Dees by eight points. Dees has scored four second place finishes and one win, but he's been making up for missing one race and still has a shot at the championship. Augustine has had his challenges as a hard crash this year forced him to get a new car to finish the season.

Meanwhile, two-time winner Miles Deubert is only 15 points out of the lead. While these three drivers battle it out for the championship, Dave Foote is within nine points of Deubert for third in the standings. Foote ran impressively last week as he scored his second Main Event win of the season. Other drivers to watch for this week include Bob Dees, Dave Everson and Mike Linder.

The Dwarf Car division has an amazing three-way tie for the lead heading into the final race. Two-time champion Josh King, Chad Cardoza and Camden Robustelli are all tied atop the leader board. King and Robustelli have each won two Main Events at Southern Oregon Speedway, and Robustelli also has two wins at Siskiyou Motor Speedway and one in his most recent appearance at Cottage Grove Speedway. He appears to have the hot hand headed into the weekend.

Only four points out of the lead is two-time winner Kalvin Morton, but Morton is still scrambling to get a motor together for Saturday night. Reigning champion Brock Peters is six points out of the lead, while son Cody Peters trails by seven points. With these six drivers very much in contention for the championship, Saturday's Dwarf Car show will be one that you won't want to miss. Other drivers to watch for this week include Ryan Smith, Fred Hay, Joe Sanders and Michael Johnson.

Another close battle is taking place in the JOAT Labs Hornets division. Heading into the final race, rookie Bree Tritchler leads 2016 champion Tim Hedges by just seven points. Tritchler has run impressively all season long. While both she and Hedges have one Main Event win, she also has four second place finishes. After winning his third Main Event of the season, Brandyn Wonsyld now leads Chris Boynton by 18 points in the race for third. Boynton has done well in his rookie season with two wins. Other drivers to watch for this week include Dylan Irving, Jenna Hedges, Dylan Sauer and John Ferreira.

David Steele has wrapped up the Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock championship following his impressive ninth feature win of the season last week. In fact, Hunter Magnan has locked up second in the standings following his fourth second place finish last week. Steve Goetz has a one point lead over reigning champion Kristopher Mix in a close battle for third. Other drivers to watch for this week includes Garrett Fredrickson, Michael McLeod, Ashtin Hedges and 2014 champion Gary Anderson.

The Valley Store All Late Model Lites championship battle has been decided already. Three-time winner Charlie Eaton clinched the championship last week. In fact, Greg Arnold appears to be headed for second in the standings. Following his second win of the season, Eric Aos and his son Dusty Aos are tied for third in points.

This is the second to last race of the 2018 campaign. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with the first race starting at 7 p.m. General Admission is $12. Seniors, Veterans and Juniors (7 to 12) are $6. Children 6 and under are free. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Championship Racing Continues At Siskiyou Motor Speedway

Yreka, CA...This weekend, fans will get the opportunity to watch two nights of racing at The Siskiyou County Fairgrounds. On Friday night, it's a full slate of Outlaw Kart racing on the little track. On Saturday night, the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks, IMCA Sport Modifieds and Mini Stocks will be competing on the big track. Only two point races remain for both tracks.

Dr. Scott Lenz has been on fire in the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stock division this season-best. Beating him has been next to Impossible, but 2016 champion Steve Borror has certainly given it a great effort. Borror is the only driver to beat Lenz in a point race at Siskiyou Motor Speedway this year. He won the season opener, and he has been the driver leading the pursuit of Lenz in the three most recent races. Unfortunately, he's had to settle for second, while Lenz has notched four straight wins in Yreka and six wins on the Outlaw Pro Stock circuit. Lenz is closing in on the division championship.

Scott Flowers is watching Lenz pull a little further away each race, but he still clings to second in the standings ahead of Borror. Flowers has three thirds and two seconds at Siskiyou Speedway this year and seems to be on a good pace to hold on to second in the final standings. The only driver to score all Top 5 finishes on the circuit this year is Matt Harlow. Matt is fourth in points, and he caught a break in the point race when fifth-ranked Johnny Cobb left the track last week on a tow truck hook after the heat races. Cobb had a broken rear end and was done for the night. The Pro Stock drivers always put on a good show, and other drivers to watch for this week include John David Duffie, Jeff Haudenshild, Ginny Flowers, James Flowers and Bryan Hammond.

The IMCA Sport Modifieds were unable to run for points last week due to the fact that all IMCA sanctioned tracks cannot run for points on the weekend of the big Boone, Iowa Nationals. The division still put on a great show last week with Matt Sanders joining 2016 champion Jimmy Lipke as the only other two-time winner this season. Sanders scored the win with Ethan Killingsworth notching his third straight second place finish ahead of Lipke. Killingsworth was only making his fifth start, but the Mini Stock graduate seems to have a knack for the Sport Modified division.

Because points weren't being offered last week, point leader Trevor Tiffee took a break. He's back this week to finish what he started. By taking the green flag on Saturday night, Tiffee will clinch the 2018 championship. However, he's hoping to get his second win of the season. Second-ranked Ryder Boswell competed last week, but heat race problems forced him to scratch from the Main Event. He has finished as high as second this year, but a feature victory has eluded him so far. He'll be going for a win this week, and two other drivers, Randy Wright, and Killingsworth, are looking to get their first wins of the season.

The Mini Stock battle has been between two-time reigning champion Marilyn Yawnick, two-time champion and Mike Whitaker and past champion Terry Kendrick all season long. 23 points separate the Top 3 drivers with Yawnick in front of Whitaker by 13 points. She has won three Main Events this season, while Whitaker has one win, three seconds and three thirds. Kendrick is still looking for his first win, but he has scored two seconds and four third place finishes so far. Usually, these three drivers are occupying the Top 3 in the Main Event, but last week's finish had a different look.

Dennis Jorgensen became only the fourth different winner in 10 races this season as he held off Whitaker to grab the win. Rookie Darek Alford continues to impress as he held off Yawnick for his second straight third place finish last week. Unfortunately, Alford has missed some races, leaving Zac McMurray leading him by 35 points in the rookie battle. Alford, meanwhile, trails David Steele by just 14 points for fifth and leads fellow rookie Jason Frost by 22 points.

Saturday night won't be the only opportunity to see some great racing. On Friday night on the little 1/8 mile dirt oval, The Outlaw Karts will be back with several divisions competing once again. Because of the rules situation being a little disoriented, track officials elected to run Beginners Box Stock Sealed and Beginners Box Stock Open classes. The Open class has been somewhat dominated by young Chayce Smith out of Hayfork ahead of Austin Bartholomew. In the Sealed class, Shailene Horn leads newly-crowned Medford champion Carson Henson by 63 points with three-time winner Mike Wheeler Jr in third.

The Steinhoff brothers find themselves in a good battle for the Box Stock championship. Brandon leads Tyler by just 13 points. Cale Cunial is well on his way to the 250 Kart championship. Logan McKnight leads Braden Weiser by 43 points in the race for second with Nick Perrin four points behind Weiser in third.

Josh Steinhoff has a commanding lead over Dillon Lausen in the 500 Open Kart class. Meanwhile, Steve Rambo leads newly-crowned Medford champion Lori Fuller by 41 points in the UAS Speedway Kart class. Reigning champion Brionna Fuller is 53 points behind her mother in third and should have the go-ahead to race after breaking her arm earlier this year.

It should be a great weekend for racing at the fairgrounds. After checking out some great Outlaw Kart racing on the little track on Friday, the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks, IMCA Sport Modifieds and Mini Stocks will have an entertaining show on the big track on Saturday night. The following week, the season will come to a close with the annual Rod Restad Memorial, featuring IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds and Mini Stocks. For further information, go to www.siskiyoumotorspeedway.com.

Sanders, Lenz, Jorgensen Win At Siskiyou Motor Speedway

Yreka, CA...September 8...After a month-long break in the action, racing returned to Siskiyou Motor Speedway with Fan Appreciation Night Saturday night. The race featured a break between the heat races and the Main Events to allow for the fans to meet with the racers and get their pictures taken and get autographs. Come Main Event time, Matt Sanders (IMCA Sport Modifieds), Dr Scott Lenz (Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks) and Aaron Jorgensen (Mini Stocks) won their respective Main Events. Because of the IMCA Nationals in Boone, Iowa, the Sport Modifieds and Mini Stocks ran for no points.

Starting on the second row, Matt Sanders wasted little time getting the lead in the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. Rookie Ethan Killingsworth chased him most of the way, but Sanders would prevail ahead of Killingsworth at the checkered flag. This was the second win for Sanders, making him only the second two-time winner in the division this year. He also won the Trophy Dash. The second place finish was the third for straight for Killingsworth. 2016 champion Jimmy Lipke finished third, followed by Rich McCoy, Randy Wright, Isaac Sanders, Gary Foster and Marty Burdine. Ryder Boswell was a Main Event scratch.

Dr. Scott Lenz won his fourth 20 lap Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stock Main Event at Yreka and sixth on the circuit. Lenz trailed Scott Flowers for two laps before making his move into the lead on lap three. A few laps later, 2016 champion Steve Borror moved into second, but all he could do was chase the current point leader Lenz to the checkered flag. Flowers settled for third, followed by Bryan Hammond, Matt Harlow, Ray Kniffen Jr, Ginny Flowers, John David Duffie and James Flowers. Lenz and Borror won eight lap heat races and Lenz also captured the four lap trophy Dash.

Dennis Jorgensen impressed with his first 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event win of the season. "Magic" Mike Whitaker chased him across the line in second, while rookie Darek Alford matched his season best performance with another third place finish. Point leader Marilyn Yawnick finished fourth, followed by Mike Kendrick, Jason Frost, Trophy Dash winner Terry Kendrick and Zac McMurray.

Next Saturday night, the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks will be back along with the IMCA Sport Modifieds and Mini Stocks. It will be a point program for all three divisions. Fans of the Outlaw Kart track will take note that Friday night offers a full slate of racing for them as well. For further information, go to www.siskiyoumotorspeedway.com.

At Coos Bay Speedway

Coos Bay, Oregon...September 8...Brody Montgomery won the 30 lap NASCAR Super Late Model Main Event Saturday night at Coos Bay Speedway. It was Championship Night, and Montgomery used his ninth win of the season to claim the division championship. Tom Elam abandoned his Modified point lead at Roseburg to compete with Montgomery and kept it close all the way to the checkered flag before settling for second. Deven Brown was the final lead lap finisher as Wayne Butler, Mike Taylor, Chris Ray, Thor Kristensen and Chris Kristensen completed the finishing order. Elam won the five lap Trophy Dash, while Montgomery and Brown each won their respective eight lap heat races.

Braden Fugate was making only his fourth Sportsman Late Model start, and he outran Wayne Butler to win the 20 lap Main Event. Dyllan Siewell was a solid third and used that finish to clinch the division championship. Tom Williams took the checkered flag in fourth. Siewell won the five lap Trophy Dash, and Butler was the eight lap heat race winner.

Steve Dubisar scored his fifth 20 lap Street Stock Main Event win of the season, and he did it in clean sweep fashion with wins in the five lap  Trophy Dash and eight lap heat race. Nobody came close to the flying Dubisar in the Main Event, but Ken Fox used his second place finish to wrap up his championship season. Toby McIntyre and David Smith completed the Main Event finishing order.

Sam Talon left little doubt who the Mini Outlaw champion was as he won his 11th 20 lap Main Event of the season. Talon also won the five lap Trophy Dash and eight lap heat race. Only Tom Siewell managed to stay on the lead lap with Talon in the Main Event as Jason Berrier and Hunter Berrier completed the finishing order.

Tyler Tullos wrapped up a successful Hornet division championship campaign by winning his eighth 20 lap Main Event of the season. Subbing for Hannah Robison, Street Stock star Jeff Thurman outran April Warmack for the second place finish. Gabrielle Boles finished fourth, followed by Kris Parker, Steven Parker, Dusty Shingleton, Leroy Rockwell, Jamie Daniels and Larry Crune. Thurman won the five lap Trophy Dash and his eight lap heat race. Peyton Reigard won the other heat race.

Griff Smith collected his seventh 15 lap Junior Stingers Main Event win of the season. He won the five lap Trophy Dash and eight lap heat race to wrap up the division championship. Alex Butler finished second in the Main Event, followed by James Shingleton.

After the oval track goes dark for a week, the Rolling Thunder Big Rigs come to town on September 22nd. Joining them on the program will be the Sportsman Late Models, Street Stocks and Hornets. For further information, go to www.coosbayspeedway.us.

Steve Thompson Wins Kitty Potter Race For A Cure
At Douglas County Speedway

Roseburg, Oregon...September 8...Steve Thompson won the 75 lap Northwest Pro 4 Alliance Main Event Saturday night at Douglas County Speedway. It was the annual Kitty Potter Race For A Cure event. Thompson had a battle to the finish between himself, Brad Morrison and Rick Thompson. Less than a second separated the three drivers as they finished in order at the checkered flag. Andy Nelson Sr was one lap down in fourth as Tom Pinkowski, Brian Cole, James Hays, Eddie Secord and Jeff Raver completed the finishing order. Steve Thompson was the fastest qualifier at 15.527, beating the 15.535 effort of Morrison. Secord won the four lap A Dash in a close battle with Thompson, and the B Dash went to Cole. Eight lap heat race wins went to Secord and Pinkowski.

Harlan Cox continued to pad his point lead with his sixth 15 lap PRA Hardtop Main Event win. Cox won by a few car-lengths ahead of 2016 champion Greg Hickman. Brian Lenihan won a good battle with Troy Gasner and Johnny Cox as they finished third through fifth, respectively. Tanner Metcalf was sixth, followed by Steve Smith, Kyran Greene, Donni Fain and Mike Batman. Cox set the fast time standard of 17.058, beating the 17.211 of Batman. Gasner outran Cox to win the four lap Trophy Dash, and heat wins went to Fain and Batman, who won a close race with Cox.

Jeff Solberg maintained his Street Stock point lead with his fifth 30 lap Main Event victory. Solberg won the race by a straightaway ahead of Dale Roth. Doug Riseley was the only other lead lap finisher as Bill Stewart placed fourth, followed by Monique Scevers, Rob Mueller, Vince Christen, Chris Lemon and Don Livermore. Mueller was the quickest qualifier at 16.972, beating the 17.174 effort of Roth. Stewart outran Roth to win the four lap Trophy Dash, and Scevers and Solberg won their respective eight lap heat races.

Ron Johnson won his second 30 lap Hornet Main Event. Johnson won the race by over a straight away in front of Jeremy Mayfield, who was enjoying his best finish of the season. Bart Pulse won a close battle with Bryson Lillard for the third position, while Pete Lemon finished fifth just ahead of Bob Vancil and Dylan Grichar. Valerie West was a lap down in eighth, followed by Michael Kennedy and Tyler Organ. The Hornets produced the biggest field of 13 cars, and Ryan Dickerson was the fastest qualifier at 20.144. Jeremy Simms was second quick at 20.662. Four lap Trophy Dash honors went to Simms ahead of Lemon, and Dickerson suffered a mechanical problem to end his night. Mayfield won his eight lap heat race, and Bob Vancil was the other heat winner.

Rob Mueller won the 10 lap Modified Main Event ahead of John Harvey. Harvey gained the point lead as Tom Elam elected to race his Late Model at Coos Bay instead. Miller set the quick time of 15.768, and third quick Tom Durant scratched prior to the Main Event. Miller also won the four lap Trophy Dash and six lap heat race.

This Saturday Night is Championship Night and Eve of Destruction. The PRA Hardtops will be back along with Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hornets and Bangers. There will also be a Trailer Race. It is the final point race of the season, but the Track N Treat Enduro 200 is still scheduled for Saturday, October 27th.  Kaeding Kicks Off Gold Cup Week With Civil War Series Victory At Silver Dollar Speedway

Chico, CA...September 5...Taking full advantage of his front row starting position, Tim Kaeding led all 30 laps to win the Civil War Sprint Car Series Main Event on Wednesday night at Silver Dollar Speedway. This was the opening night of Gold Cup Week, and it was his first win at the speedway in six years. Kaeding currently leads the Sprint Car Challenge Series standings.

Kaeding was flawless from start to finish. He set the pace from the get-go, trailed closely by Tanner Thorson and Mason Moore. The lead three positions went unchanged throughout the race. A lap 27 caution flag provided Thorson one more shot at Kaeding, but Kaeding sped out front on the final restart and brought it home to an impressive victory. Thorson settled for second, followed by Moore, Sanders, track champion Andy Forsberg, Sean Becker, Chase Johnson, Bud Kaeding, Geoff Ensign and Shawn Conde.

A civil War season-high 43 competitors signed in to go racing, and Forsberg set the fast time standard of 12.073 in qualifying. Kaeding was second quick at 12.096. There were four 10 lap heat races, and Moore outran Becker to win the first heat. Tim Kaeding outran Billy Wallace to win the second heat, and Johnson finished ahead of Cole Macedo in the third heat. Thorson outran Michael Ing to claim the fourth heat race win. It was Kalib Henry besting Tim Kaeding in the eight lap Dash. Dustin Golobic won the 10 lap C Main ahead of Korey Lovell and Kyle Offill. Ensign scored the win in the 15 lap B Main in front of Colby Copeland, Cody Hodgson, Chase Majdic and Jace Vanderweerd.

Casey McClain won an exciting 25 lap C&H Veterans Services Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint Series Main Event. The race got off to an exciting start with the drivers in the first four positions battling closely. Geoff Ensign drove the Brian Grossenheider car into the lead on the opening lap, but he surrendered first to point leader Shawn Jones on lap three. Jones held the spot for three laps until Ensign regained first on lap six. Jake Morgan slipped past Jones for second on a lap eight restart and gained the lead from Ensign on a lap 10 restart. Three-time Hunt Series champion Terry Schank Jr settled into second on lap 12, but Jones came charging by for the position on lap 15. Morgan had problems on lap 18 and Jones and Schank grabbed the first and second positions. McClain held the third position and took second from Schank on lap 22. On the 24th lap, McClain went charging past Jones for the lead and he went on to the thrilling victory. Ensign made a late move into second as Jones settled for third, followers by Chico champion Tony Richards, Schank, Cody Spencer, Nick Larson, past Chico champion Angelique Bell, Troy DeGaton and Jesse Love IV

Love surprised the 20 car Spec Sprint field with the quick time of 15.217, beating the 15.295 of Jones. Ensign won the first eight lap heat race ahead of Jones, while Bell outran McClain in the second heat. Spencer beat Schank to win the third heat, and Richards outran Morgan to claim the fourth heat race win.

Pit Stops

The season is coming to a close at Southern Oregon Speedway. We have just two races left as each of the regular divisions will have just one more point event to decide things. Several of the championships have been decided, and a couple of championships will be decided once the point leader takes a green flag in their respective Main Events.

The previous few weeks leading up to last week's Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car event were a test of David Hibbard. When last the Winged Sprint Car division was at Southern Oregon Speedway on August 11th, Hibbard suffered a double whammy. First, he lost a heat race when he failed to go to the scales after his win. Forced to come from the back of the pack, he made it about halfway through before his motor gave up on him. Week of Speed began two days later at Coos Bay, and Hibbard decided to give that a run. A couple races into the series, he flipped and destroyed his chassis.

However, David had done so well in the previous seven point events, winning five times and finishing second twice, that all he needed to do was take a green flag in the Main Event to assure himself his first championship at his home track. He did that and took the checkered flag in the Main Event in fourth. It was a job well done for the man who has certainly risen above and beyond to help get a Sprint Car division established at Southern Oregon Speedway.

The battle for second in points took a turn for the ugly when Jeffrey Hudson and Blaine Cory got together and flipped coming out of Turn 2 during the Main Event. Both drivers have been doing well lately. Cory had a string of Top 3 finishes going in previous point races, and Hudson was coming off of a third in the Iron Head Nationals and a second in the Cascade Wingless Sprint Car Challenge race. Both drivers were forced to watch the finish of the race from the sidelines. Hudson would still hold on to second in the points, but Bailey Hibbard had his best finish in several races in second. This enabled him to overtake Cory for third in the standings. It's still close between the three drivers.

Tanner Holmes seemed poised to be a contender in this year's championship race, but the team elected not to run full time as he still enjoys running special Outlaw Kart races. He did finish second in Week of Speed and 10th in Speedweek, which is pretty impressive for the driver who just turned 15 years old. On Saturday night, Tanner gave a glimpse of things to come when he led all 25 laps for an impressive first career feature win.

There's also a battle happening for fifth in the standings. Aaron Miller held the position going into the night, but he arrived after the heat races as he was putting the last-minute touches on his car. He looked good for a while, but he was out of the Main Event  early. Charlie Thompson looked good in winning the Scramble and running second until lap 18 in the Main Event when he retired from the race. This opened the door for Enrique Jaime to move into fifth in points after a seventh place feature finish, but his lead over Miller is just three points.

The division welomed back a couple of drivers we haven't seen in awhile, Merissa Henson and Steve Thompson. Thompson, who raced in the Late Model Lites division in the past, finished ninth. Henson looked good in her heat race with a second place finish and brought it home to a respectable fifth in the Main Event. Another driver making a rare appearance was past Cottage Grove champion Hedge Carter. The last time we saw him, he was flipping on the front straightaway. On this occasion, he won his heat race and finished third in the Main Event.

Another championship that has been wrapped up is the Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks. Merely by taking the green flag in last week's Main Event, David Steele staked his claim to his first Southern Oregon Speedway championship. He was the Mini Stock champion in Yreka back in 2015. Steele won his heat race, but a clean sweep was out of the question as 2014 champion Gary Anderson won both his heat race and the Trophy Dash. Second in the Dash was the only blemish to Steele's night as he led all the way in the Main Event for his impressive ninth win of the season.

For a while there, it looked like 2017 "Rookie of the Year" Hunter Magnum might let second in the standings slip away. However, he has stepped up big when he needed good finishes the most. Last time out, Hunter scored a second place finish. He did it again last Saturday, making it four times he's finished as high as second. Could a Main Event win happen for him this week? Kristopher Mix had miserable luck once again last week. He finished last to eliminate him from contention in the race for second. As it is, he trails 2013 champion Steve Goetz by just one point for third. The reigning champion may get a reprieve as Goetz has said he will miss this week's race to attend his grandmother's birthday party.

Despite some bad luck this last week, Garrett Fredrickson holds a 17 point lead over rookie Michael McCloud in the race for fifth in the standings. Garrett hit the wall hard during the Main Event and lost power on the final lap. Ashtin Hedges has been doing everything possible to reel in McLoud in the rookie race. After his fourth place finish, Hedges is 17 points behind McLeod. It just may be that time will run out on Hedges in his quest, but anything can happen. Because of his hard crash earlier this year forcing him to miss a couple of races, points aren't really a factor for Gary Anderson, who finished fifth last week after winning his heat and the Dash. However, he would certainly love to get a feature win before the season ends.

The Valley Store All Late Model Lites championship belongs to Charlie Eaton following his third place finish last week. Although his latest start may not have been anything to brag about, it did the trick for the three-time winner in his quest for the title. He finished behind second place finisher Greg Arnold, who used that finish to lock up second in the standings. Eric Aos won for the second time this year, and that put him in a tie with his son Dusty, who didn't finish the Main Event.

The driver who looked to be the star of the evening was Lee Doty. Doty won both his heat race and the Trophy Dash and was well on his way to a clean sweep when motor issues sent him to the pits during a lap seven caution period. This division has been at the speedway for the past three seasons in no small part thanks to the support Doty has offered. The division will be back again this week, and he will try for his second win of the season. It's interesting to note that we have had four different drivers win Main Events in this class this year as nobody has dominated things.

The Late Model division has turned out to be one heck of a battle, and Nathan Augustine may be a bit surprised that he leads the standings with one race left to go. Things seemed to be going all right early in the year, but when a lapped car took him out, it also did severe damage to his race car. This left Nathan scrapping to get a ride for a race. Thanks to Don Garrett Jr, he came back out for the next race and earned his points. The next time, he had his new car. Nathan has won two Main Events this year, and he clings to a slim eight point lead over John Dees.

Dees has certainly been the most improved driver in the field this season. He has a division-leading four second place finishes and one win, but he had to miss a race for a family gathering. Had even just been there and taken a green flag in the Main Event, John would be leading the points right now. He finished fourth in the Main Event last week, which was not one of his better runs. It was nothing to write home about for Augustine either as he finished fifth. However, John has point earning potential coming into the finale as he has a pole position start secured for the Trophy Dash. Augustine did not qualify unless there's a scratch from one of the Top 4 finishers from last week.

Longtime Late Model competitor Dave Foote has not given up on the possibility that he could still finish third in the standings. To that end, he jumped out to the Main Event lead at the start and led all the way for his second win of the season. It's been an up-and-down season for Dave, but when things have been right, he's been as competitive as anybody in the field. Bob Dees had been working on a clean sweep and ran second in the Main Event for several laps before he started to fade in the waning laps.

It was Miles Deubert who got by the elder Dees first. Miles is the top rookie in the field this year, and by scoring a second place finish, he stays within seven points of John Dees and 15 of Augustine. It may still be a bit of a long shot for Deubert in the championship battle, but anything can happen. There have been five different winners in the Late Models this season, and it may be that the winner of this week's Main Event will end up being the champion.

That could also be the case in the JOAT Labs Hornets. By far and away, the star of the season has been Brandyn Wonsyld. The second-year competitor got off to a really strong start this year and led the early stages of the season. His impressive numbers include three wins and five second place finishes. His undoing was his absence from two races, but his win last week keeps him 18 points ahead of rookie Chris Boynton in the battle for third. One-time winner Dylan Irving still has a shot at fourth in the standings, he trails Boynton by nine points.

The championship, however, will be decided between rookie Bree Tritchler and Tim Hedges. Tritchler leads Hedges by seven points going into the finale. Both drivers have one win, but Tritchler has four second place finishes. Both Tritchler and Hedges struggled just a bit in the most recent race and were lapped at the finish. However, Tritchler had gotten around Hedges, as did her teammate Boynton, which enabled her to add a point to her lead by the end of the night. Neither Tritchler, nor Hedges qualified for this week's Trophy Dash.

However, Tricthler could find herself in the Trophy Dash if the rumors of Dylan Sauer not being there are true. Sauer has struggled just a little bit since starting later in the season. However, he's gotten faster with each start. Last week was a breakout night for Dylan as he won his first heat race and then took second from Jenna Hedges to get his best feature finish yet. He might be tempted to take the night off, but it could just be that he would get his first feature win this week if he showed up. Jenna Hedges, meanwhile, was driving the car her son Ashtin drove to a pair of feature wins earlier this season. She settled for a third place finish.

Siskiyou Motor Speedway is just two races away from putting an end their season. They returned after a more than month-long break last week, but their Mini Stock and IMCA Sport Modified divisions competed for fun and money. The Sport Modifieds were not allowed to compete for points as per IMCA rules that dictate no track may run for IMCA points on the weekend of the Boone, Iowa Nationals. There might have been concern about who would show up, but they still had nine competitors there to race. The Mini Stocks could have run for points, but the SCMA elected to make this a non-point race for them as well.

Bragging rights were on the line last week, and the driver doing the bragging would be Matt Sanders. Matt became only the second driver to win two Main Events in Yreka this year as he held off young Ethan Killingsworth for the impressive victory. Killingsworth seems to be closing in on his first career IMCA Sport Modified win. He has now driven to three straight second place finishes. If you've watched Ethan race his Mini Truck during the past couple of seasons, you aren't surprised that he's adapting so well to a Sport Modified.

Jimmy Lipke bears the honor of being the other driver to win two features at Siskiyou Speedway this year. He has looked good in his visits to Chico and Medford this year, and he is definitely a threat to win either of the last two races this season. He finished third in the Main Event this last week. Point leader Trevor Tiffee used the non-point week to take another night off and get ready for this week. All he needs to do is take a green flag and he has secured his championship. Ryder Boswell seems to have second in hand as well, but he'll need to dodge the bad luck that took him out last week. Mechanical issues forced him to scratch before the Main Event even started.

Only 23 points separate Marilyn Yawnick from Mike Whitaker and Terry Kendrick in a hotly-contested Mini Stock championship battle. Marilyn has picked up three wins, and the reigning champion holds a 13 point lead over fellow two-time champion Mike Whitaker. Whitaker is hoping the numbers work out in his favor. The #4 comes to mind as he won the 2010 and 2014 championships. By that way of thinking, this should be his year, but he may need to score his second feature win of the season to do it. Kendrick, meanwhile, is looking for his first win of the season. However, Terry had a hand in getting other drivers out there this past week, including Mike Kendrick and top rookie Zac McMurray. Terry didn't have a very good Main Event run, but he still nabbed a Trophy Dash win.

Rookie Darek Alford continues to get better in the former Devon Weiser car. For the second straight race, he finished third in the Main Event. Because he missed a race, he finds himself trailing McMurray by 35 points in the standings. However, there's enough point earning potential in these final two weeks that it's possible for him to overcome that deficit. It all starts with Saturday night and what he can do there.

It's pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point that Dr Scott Lenz will win the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stock championship. Since he has won six Main Events on the circuit, including four in Yreka, it's no big surprise. Lenz has an additional feature win at Coos Bay in a NASCAR Sportsman Late Model race. His win last week didn't come easy with 2016 champion Steve Borror nipping at his heels. For Borror, this was his third straight second place finish in Yreka, and he also bears the distinction of being the driver to beat Lenz in the first point race at Yreka. Borror missed a race, which has enabled perennial title contender Scott Flowers the hold down second in the standings. Flowers did his usual steady job of getting his car to a third place finish last week.

The Pro Stock drivers are getting a workout lately as they are in the midst of a four week stretch of races. Though their return to Medford two weeks ago didn't go as smoothly as they would have liked, they will be back there for the season finale on September 22nd. This race, though added to their schedule late, has been voted to be a point race. They run again in Yreka this week before the Medford return to close the season. Matt Harlow continues to be the driver with all Top 5 feature finishes so far, keeping him fourth in the standings. Johnny Cobb was keeping it close, but his night ended early in a heat race mishap last week. The steady Bryan Hammond continues to log good laps and would finish fourth last week ahead of Harlow. Bryan counts himself among the Top 10 in the standings this year.

We've finally gotten some details about the Rod Restad Memorial Race that will close the season in Yreka. The race was moved to September 23rd to not conflict with Championship Night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Both tracks would be running IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Modifieds that night and dividing the car count. The SCMA board voted to move the race to Sunday.

They will pay $1,200 to win the IMCA Modified race and $1,000 to win the IMCA Sport Modified race. IMCA Modified point leader Ryan McDaniel voiced his disapproval of the decision to move it to Sunday and may not make it for the finale, which could open the door for a point lead change. Since this will be their fourth race for that class, it officially qualifies as an IMCA championship.

Getting results from Hayfork has been a bit of a chore for this writer, and though we've endeavored to put something out there, a lack of information has not made it easy to say much. Last week, it appeared as if there were about a dozen Mini Stocks and at least a half a dozen Hobby Stocks in the field, but finishing results have not been made public. The only thing we've had to go by is the photography of Melissa Turner, showing us that Russ Newman won the Hobby Stock race while Orland Raceway Mini Truck point leader Keith Ross won the Mini Stock race. Bryan Gummerus won the Enduro race, which has been even more challenging for us to get much information on. It's a unique show, and there isn't a track in California that has something quite like the Enduro class in Hayfork.

The one thing that we've endeavored to do is just let the people know that there is racing in Trinity County. A magazine article a couple of years ago sort of made light of the town of Hayfork and didn't really mention what a miracle it was that this track ever came to be. Even when it looked like the fall of the previous association would close things down, others have stepped up to keep the track going this year as Mountain Valley Raceway. All we're hoping to do is spread the word that there is racing in this north west mountain town of Hayfork, California.

Coos Bay Speedway finally crowned their 2018 NASCAR Whelen All American Series champions. They still have three races left to go on the oval track, but this last Saturday night was Championship Night. It's sort of a mystery, when you contemplate the point fund money being offered by NASCAR, why other dirt tracks on the West Coast haven't joined Coos Bay in the NASCAR movement. Though they don't have a huge Late Model car count, they've been getting six to eight cars this year. The drivers are going to be dividing a tidy sum of money at the awards banquet.

Brody Montgomery is perhaps the fastest rising star at Coos Bay Speedway. He dominated the Sportsman Late Model division last season in winning that $1,000 championship over two-time champion Wayne Butler. He started racing Super Late Models just a bit last year, but it was a full-time move for him this year. There might have been people wondering whether Brody could handle the move, but the answer was a resounding yes.

Montgomery was so dominant this year that a bounty was placed on him for anybody that could beat him. Last week, he scored his ninth Main Event win of the season to clinch the championship that could be worth up to $5,000 for him. It wasn't such a great finale for Thor Kristensen, but everything is fine. Despite his late start, he still secured his second runner-up standing in the past three seasons. Tom Elam was an interesting driver to note. He was the PRA Modified point leader in Roseburg, and he elected to skip that race to go to Coos Bay and take another shot at beating Montgomery. He fell just short in second.

The road does seem to go through Wayne Butler to get to the Sportsman Late Model championship. Last year, Montgomery made it through. This year, Dyllan Siewell got the job done. Butler missed a Main Event start earlier this season, and he wasn't quite able to make up the deficit as he would settle for second in the standings. The feature win fell to the newest Sportsman Late Model competitor, Braden Fugate. Fugate has run very impressively in Hornets this year, and he makes a nice addition to the Sportsman Late Model roster.

Sam Talon did a superb job in repeating as the Mini Outlaw champion. Perhaps our biggest disappointment in the division this year was the lack of a visit from the potent VW Beetle of Rob Lauver. Lauver and Talon have put on some good battles in the past, but it fell to Street Stock star Kex Fox to challenge Talon during the second half of the season. Fox set about trying to win the Street Stock championship, and that was never really in doubt as he won the Main Event nine times enroute to the championship. The steady David Smith secured second in the final run down. The star during the second half of the season seemed to be Steve Dubisar. Steve's fifth win of the season last week secured him fourth in the standings, just 14 points shy of overtaking Jeff Thurman for third.

Hornet newcomer Tyler Tullos looked very impressive this year in winning that division championship. In 20 starts, he only missed the Top 5 twice, and his eight wins led the division. April Warmack was a distant second with one feature win. Three-time feature winner Hannah Robison would secure third in the final run down. The Hornets car count started to come on strong in the final few races of the season, and the outlook is good for this entry level class.

The Junior Stinger division was created for drivers 11 to 14 years old. They are driving Hornet cars. We saw five different drivers compete this year, but seven-time winner Griff Smith was the class of the field in winning the championship over Alex Butler. Optimism is high that this division will see some car count growth in 2019.

There are still some races left to be seen before the season comes to a close. Rolling Thunder Big Rigs will take to the speedway on September 22nd, followed by an ISCS Winged Sprint Car show on September 29th. If you haven't had enough yet, the annual Lucas Oil Open Show, presented by the Prather family, closes the season on October 6th. It's been a great season at Coos Bay Speedway on the oval track.

In a final note, Orland Raceway gets ready for Fan Appreciation Night this week. There are tracks that do the Fan Appreciation Night thing, including Siskiyou Motor Speedway last week. What Orland does that has set it apart is they have the cars on display behind the main grandstand and let the fans meet the drivers by the race cars in a relaxing setting, get pictures, autographs and have good conversation. It's become one of the more popular events on the schedule.

This track still has two point races left counting this one, and then comes the two big shows in October. Championships are still up for grabs, including a close Mini Stock battle between four-time winner Barbara Crain and reigning champion Tom Davis. Even Sean Perry is in this battle. The Pure Stock division seems to be nearly in hand for 2015 champion Paul Stevens, but any misstep and 2016 champion Steve Martin and 2017 champion Jeremy Langenderfer could make a move. Langenderfer leads the division in Main Event wins and is also the Chico Silver Dollar Speedway champion. Keith Ross, meanwhile, will need to have a complete collapse to fall out of the lead in the Mini Truck class. All three of these divisions put on a good show, and that should be the case again this week.

Hogge Scores $5,000 Win In R Charles Snyder Salute
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 1-2...Leading all the way from his front row start, Bobby Hogge IV collected $5,000 for his victory in the 50 lap R Charles Snyder Salute for the IMCA Modifieds at Southern Oregon Speedway. Hogge started his impressive weekend with a pair of heat race wins on Saturday night and a very close $700 second in the Invitational 25 lap feature. Adding that money to his $500 lap leader bonus from Sunday, Hogge's winnings exceeded $6,000 on the weekend.

The drivers competed in two sets of 10 lap heat races on Saturday night to determine the Top 16 qualifiers for Sunday's big money race. The Top 8 in points redrew for their starting positions in the first four rows of the feature. Hogge, Kellen Chadwick and Saturday Invitational Feature winner CJ Putnam won both of their heat races. Other heat race winners included track point later Albert Gill, Tyler Smith, John Campos and Cottage Grove point leader Jake Mayden. There were 41 competitors for the weekend

Hogge charged into the lead at the start of the Main Event, followed by Clint Reichenbach. The race got off to a rocky start with three yellow flags in the first four laps. Hogge continued to lead Reichenbach on the lap four restart as Nick Trenchard moved past Putnam for third. A lap 11 caution flag flew for Anthony Slaney. After the first restart attempt saw a yellow flag fall for Jeremy Ohlde, Hogge continued to lead Reichenbach and Trenchard. However, the yellow flag waved one lap later for Slaney in Turn 3. During the caution, Slaney received a black flag for bringing out two yellow flags and went slowly around the track for one lap before tagging the rear end of Collen Winebarger's car on his way off the race track. Hogge continued to lead Reichenbach on the restart, and tenth starter Darrell Hughes II had found his way into third. Hogge held a straightaway advantage by lap 18, and Hughes slipped past Reichenbach for second on lap 19. A lap 35 caution flag was thrown to allow the drivers an opportunity to refuel due to laps run under caution. Hogge led Hughes on the restart as 19th starter Bricen James settled into third. Hughes ran with Hogge down the stretch, but Hogge was not about to let the big victory slip away. Hughes settled for a $2,500 second with James a $1,500 third. Reichenbach collected $1,000 for fourth as Robby Sawyer, Kellen Chadwick, Jake Mayden, Collen Winberger, Trenchard, Mark Wauge and CJ Putnam completed the Top 10.

Knowing that his championship bid could take a severe hit if he didn't make it out the B Main, Albert Gill won his 15 lapper ahead of IMCA State point leader Bricen James and Jesse Bailey. Winebarger won the other B Main ahead of Jeremy Ohlde and Preston Jones as championship hopeful Zach Fettinger saw his charge from the back of the pack fall just short in fourth.

On Saturday night, the fans were treated to a special 25 lap Invitational Feature that included the Top 4 finishers from each of the first set of 10 lap heat races. CJ Putnam raced into the lead from the start ahead of Kellen Chadwick and Jake Mayden. Bobby Hogge IV made a Turn 4 pass on lap five to take third from Mayden and set his sights on Chadwick. An inside pass on the back stretch of the 13th lap gained Hogge second and he began the task of reeling in Putnam. Hogge caught Putnam by lap 21 as they worked slower traffic, and the only yellow flag of the race flew on lap 24 when Robby Sawyer spun on the front straightaway. On the restart, Hogge momentarily lost the second position, but he came roaring back with an inside pass in the final turn to claim the position. Putnam was the happy winner, followed by Hogge, Nick Trenchard, John Campos, Clint Reichenbach, Jake Mayden, Mark Wauge, Sawyer, Anthony Slaney and Tyler Smith.

the IMCA Modifieds will make their final appearance of the season on September 22nd on Championship Night. The IMCA Sport Modifieds will also be part of the show. For further information go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Ahlwardt Surprise Winner Of R Charles Snyder Salute IMCA Sport Modified Race At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 1-2...Leading all the way from his front row starting position, Guy Ahlwardt scored the $2,000 victory in the R Charles Snyder Salute IMCA Sport Modified race. Ahlwardt comes from Antioch, California and is a past Hobby Stock champion there. He's in his second season in IMCA Sport Modifieds, and this was only his second win.

Just a year after the track had a then record 31 car turn out for a Sport Modified race, the record was shattered with 53 entries for the big event. The drivers ran two sets of 10 lap qualifying heat races, and nobody picked up more than one win as the heat winner's list included Jimmy Ford, Braxton Possinger, Doug Coffman, Justin Foux, Ahlwardt, Tyler Rodgers, Mike Medel, Jimmy Lipke, Craig Nieman, Rich McCoy, Chris Frisbie and Daniel Ray. The Top 16 drivers based on heat race finishing and passing points automatically qualified for Sunday's big show, and the Top 8 point earners redrew for their starting spots at the front of the pack.

Ahlwardt raced into the early lead from his front row starting position as Lipke settled into second. They ran three laps before the first of three consecutive yellow flags slowed the pace. Saturday night Invitational Feature winner Tyler Rodgers settled into second on the lap five restart with two-time track champion and defending race winner Jorddon Braaten moving into third on lap eight. Braaten made his move around Rodgers for the second position, and Braxton Possinger was spun on the back stretch for a lap nine caution flag. Ahlwardt continued to lead Braaten and Rodgers on the restart. Through a pair of mid-race yellow flags for Matt Sanders and Jon Rowden in Turn 4 on lap 13 and Chase Thomas in Turn 4 on lap 15, Ahlwardt continued to hold off Braaten. Daniel Ray made a Turn 3 pass on lap 19 to take third from Rodgers, and another yellow flag flew for a tangle between Rowden and Jason Ferguson on lap 21. Despite two more yellow flags during the final 10 laps, Ahlwardt stayed cool under pressure and held off Braaten for the impressive victory. Braaten collected $1,000 for his runner-up finish, while Ray received $700 for third. Possinger came back from the tail of the pack for a fourth place finish, followed by Matt Sanders, Jimmy Ford, Tanner Thomas, Doug Coffman, Bruce Rey and Rodgers.

The division ran three 15 lap B Mains with two drivers transferring from each of them. Justin Foux had an impressive drive In winning the first B Main, and Tanner Thomas won a very close battle with Andrew Peckham for second. Jon Rowden won the second B Main ahead of Chris Frisbie, and Jimmy Ford won the third B Main in front of Rich McCoy.

On Saturday night, after the heat races were done, the Top 3 finishers in each of the first set of heats ran a 20 lap Invitational Feature. Jimmy Ford had a front row start and charged into the early lead ahead of Doug Coffman. Guy Ahlwardt settled into third on lap two, and a yellow flag flew for separate incidents involving Randy Wright and Daniel Ray. Ford continued to lead the restart as Rodgers made a strong inside move in Turn 4 to take over second. An inside pass on the backstretch on lap five gained Rodgers the lead from Ford. Only one more yellow flag flew on lap six. Rodgers continued to lead Ford and Ahlwardt on the restart. Matt Sanders gained the third position from Ahlwardt, who got out of shape exiting Turn 4 on lap 10. Rodgers ran well down the stretch and was rewarded with the victory, followed by Ford, Sanders, Ahlwardt, Justin Foux, Dwayne Melvin, Chase Thomas, Jorddon Braaten, Doug Coffman and Craig Nieman.

All of the main contenders in the point race failed to make the show on Sunday, and David Marble seems to be in a good position to win the IMCA Sport Modified championship when the division runs their final point race on September 22nd. It will also be the final point night for the IMCA Modifieds.

King, Robustelli Win Dwarf Car Races On
R Charles Snyder Salute Week At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 1-2...Josh King continued his bid for a third Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association championship by winning Saturday night's 20 lap Main Event. The Dwarf Cars were running two complete programs on R Charles Snyder Salute Weekend at Southern Oregon Speedway, and King left the weekend in a tie with Chad Cardoza and Camden Robustelli for the point lead. Sunday's portion of the program was not for points, and Robustelli drove an impressive race for what would be his fourth 20 lap feature win of the season.

There were 24 competitors on Saturday night, and eight lap heat race wins were collected by Kalvin Morton, Josh King, Brock Peters and Ryan Smith. Smith charged into the early Main Event lead ahead of Cody Peters, but Morton gained second on a lap two restart. A yellow flag flew for Bret James on lap four, and a Turn 3 tangle between Fred Hay and Kaycee Sheeler botched the first restart attempt. Smith continued to lead Morton and Brock Peters on the restart. Smith and Morton had a good battle going at the front of the pack, and Morton made an inside pass in Turn 4 for for the lead. However, a yellow flag waved. The first restart attempt was botched when Smith spun in Turn 1, and Morton headed to the pits. Suddenly, King had the lead over Mason Lewman and Brock Peters. Peters made a Turn 4 pass on Lewman for second on lap 11 with Chad Cardoza following closely into third. However, Camden Robustelli made his move around Cardoza for third on lap 14. King would score the victory, followed by Brock Peters, Robustelli, Cardoza, Lewman, Tim Fitzpatrick, Michael Johnson, Smith, Don Gifford and Sheeler.

Though a few drivers left after Saturday, a few drivers joined the action, and Sunday was an opportunity for others to shine. Eight lap heat race wins were recorded by King, John Chrisman and Michael Johnson. Johnson had to battle Tim Fitzpatrick for what was his first ever Dwarf Car heat race win. Robustelli raced into the Main Event lead from the start, followed by Fitzpatrick and Steve Walker. Driving a Mod Lite, Jesse Lorentz moved past Walker for third with Brock Peters following into fourth. Bill Winter brought out a lap five caution flag, and Robustelli continued to lead Fitzpatrick and Peters on the restart as Lorentz fell back to fourth. However, Lorentz regained third on lap 12 as Peters began to slow and headed for the pits. Through three yellow flags In the last 5 laps, Robustelli continued to maintain the lead on each restart and scored the well earned victory. Fitzpatrick settled for second ahead of Lorentz, a season-best fourth for Johnson, Chrisman, Fred Hay, Cody Peters, Walker, Casey Sheeler and Don Gifford.

With an extremely close championship battle still to be decided, the Dwarf Cars make their final appearance of the season on September 15th. Joining them on the card will be the Late Models, Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks, JOAT Labs Hornets and Valley Store All Late Model Lites. For further information go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Quick Wins Outlaw Pro Stock Feature
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...September 2...Making only their second appearance of the season, the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks had a bit of a rough go on the 3/10th mile clay oval at Southern Oregon Speedway. Getting an opportunity to drive the #20 car when Julia Flowers had a previous engagement, Dave Quick was the leader when the checkered flag flew after only two laps.

Point leader Scott Lenz and 2016 champion Steve Borror won eight lap heat races. With 21 competitors starting the Main Event, there was a crash racing to the green flag. The first restart attempt saw the yellow flag fall for debris on the track, and Quick led Chico, California racer Gary Newman and Dan Randall on the opening lap. A yellow flag flew after that for Phil Pipgras, Darren Arnold and Ken Irving. Quick led the restart as Randall slipped past Newman on the back stretch for second. Another crash on the front stretch brought a yellow flag after two laps. By then, the division had been on the track for 20 minutes. Quick led the restart as Borror and Lenz raced into second and third. However, another crash negated the passes and brought out a yellow and checkered flag combination. Quick was the leader and winner at that point, followed by Randall, Newman, Borror and Lenz.

Southern Oregon Speedway management has invited the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks to be a part of the season finale on September 22nd. The show will also include the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars and OTRO Hardtops.

Sprint Cars, Late Models Headline
Southern Oregon Speedway Show

White City, Oregon...The season is nearing an end at Southern Oregon Speedway, but there is the matter of some track championships left to be decided. This weekend, Southern Oregon Speedway welcomes back the exciting Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars, Late Models, Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks, JOAT Labs Hornets and Valley Store All Late Model Lites. If this five-division lineup isn't enough for you, Friday night will offer a full complement of Outlaw Kart racing at little Southern Oregon Speedway.

David Hibbard may be the leader in the Sprint Car division, but he got a lesson in recent weeks about how quickly things can slip away from you. The Iron Head Nationals race back on August 11th was a $2,000 to win event. After neglecting to go to the scales and getting disqualified from a heat race win, Hibbard had worked his way halfway through the pack in the 18 car field, only the blow a motor. The good news on this was that since there were no points on the line, the Top 3 finish that Jeffrey Hudson achieved wasn't going to count in his bid to overtake Hibbard.

But it went from bad to worse for Hibbard, who was participating in Week Of Speed at various Oregon and Washington race tracks. Just a couple of races into the series, he flipped and destroyed his chassis. He'll be back to try and finish his season in a different car, and he holds a 45 point lead over Hudson. He could clinch the championship just by starting the Main Event.

Hibbard has won an amazing five times in seven races, finishing second on the two nights he didn't win. The only two drivers to beat Hibbard in the Main Event are his son Bailey Hibbard and 2016 champion Jake Wheeler. Hudson meanwhile, is knocking on the door to his first win of the season. With a pair of seconds and a pair of thirds, he holds a 19 point lead over the division's top rookie, Blaine Cory, in the battle for second. Hudson also impressed by taking off his wing at the Cascade Wingless Sprint Car Challenge and finishing a $1,500 second that night.

With two seconds and two thirds of his own, Cory managed to move ahead of Bailey Hibbard by 10 points for third after some recent bad luck for the younger Hibbard. The Top 4 drivers are anticipated this week along with other notables such as Aaron Miller, Enrique Jaime, Charlie Thompson and TJ Winningham.

The Late Model championship is heating up after two-time winner and current point leader Nathan Augustine retired from the most recent race with a flat tire. When John Dees scored his fourth second place finish of the season that night, he moved to within 13 points of Augustine. Dees has one win to his credit and was going for a second win at the most recent race when he was overtaken by the division's top rookie, Miles Deubert. With two wins, Miles is just 11 points behind Dees with an outside shot at the championship. Hard charger Dave Foote is a one-time winner who ranks fourth in the standings, 14 points behind Deubert and nine ahead of 2016 champion Bob Dees. These five are anticipated this week along with Mike Linder, Don Garrett Jr, Garrett Dees and Brian Bowman.

The closest championship battle at the speedway is taking place in the JOAT Labs Hornets division. Rookie Bree Tritchler has used one win and four second place finishes to maintain a six point advantage over 2016 champion Tim Hedges. Hedges, who is a one-time winner this year, managed to hold on to third last time out despite nearly rolling his car in Turns 3 and 4. There's another close battle taking place for the third position. With two wins and a division-leading five second place finishes, Brandon Wonsyld is four points ahead of two-time winner Chris Boynton and 21 points ahead of the most recent winner, Dylan Irving. These five will be racing hard this week along with Jenna Hedges, Dylan Sauer and John Ferreira.

In the Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock division, David Steele has been unstoppable. Steele has an amazing  eight wins and one second place finish in his nine starts and will clinch his first Southern Oregon Speedway championship just by starting the Main Event on Saturday. After scoring his third second place finish of the season last time out, Hunter Magnan took a 27 point lead over reigning champion Kristopher Mix in the battle for second. However, Megnan wants what Mix already has this year. He'll be looking to get his first career Main Event win this week. On the strength of four second place finishes, Steve Goetz is closing in on Mix. He trails by 15 points. Other drivers to watch for this week include Garrett Fredrickson, Michael McLeod and Ashtin Hedges.

Rounding out Saturday's program will be the Valley Store All Late Model Lites. Three-time winner Charlie Eaton could clinch his first championship merely by starting the Main Event. He leads one-time winner Greg Arnold by 52 points. Only 23 points behind Arnold is Dusty Aos. Dusty leads his father, Eric Aos, by 11 points. After scoring his first win of the year, 2016 champion Lee Doty moved into fifth in the standings. Lee is the only driver to win a Main Event in this class in each of the last three years. Other drivers to look for this week include reigning champion Bob Burkett and Danny Prewitt.

On Friday night, there will be a full complement of Outlaw Kart racing on the little track. It appears as if young Vinny DeBenedetti will parlay his two feature wins into the 250 Kart championship. He holds a good lead on reigning champion Trevor Grimes, but he needs to start Friday's Main Event. Steve Rambo has been unstoppable lately and is headed for the UAS Speedway Kart championship. The closest battle at the track in between leader Carson Henson and four-time winner Malachi Johnson for the Beginners Box Stock title. Keaton Augustine is also having a good battle with Ryan Hirschbock in the Box Stock class. The kids put on a great show every time they're on the race track.

Gates open both nights at 5 with the first race starting at 7. Admission to the Outlaw Kart program is $10 and gives you pit access and a bleacher seat to enjoy the show. On Saturday, General Admission will be $12 with Veterans, Seniors and Juniors (7 to 12)  $6 each. Children 6 and under are free. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Racing Returns To Siskiyou Motor Speedway
On Saturday Night

Yreka, CA...It's been over a month since there was racing at Siskiyou Motor Speedway. This Saturday night, The action returns to the race track with a program featuring the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks, IMCA Sport Modifieds and Mini Stocks. Because the IMCA Boone Nationals is taking place this weekend, the IMCA Sport Modifieds will not be racing for points, but just purse money.

This is the seventh season for the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stock Series. The Pro Stock division has a long history, but its future was in jeopardy in 2012 when Southern Oregon Speedway introduced the IMCA Sport Modifieds and dropped the Pro Stocks from the schedule. Not wanting to give up this style of racing, Arlen Heath and several of the racers formed the Outlaw Pro Stock Association and based most of their schedule on races in Yreka that year. Six years later, the association is still going strong and enjoying some good car counts.

The Yreka track continues to be featured on the schedule, including the group's signature race, the Billy Geyer Memorial. Always looking ahead to other possibilities, the Oregon based group is working with the Nevada Outlaw Pro Stock group on a four race series that will begin in 2019. The Billy Geyer Memorial in Yreka will be a part of that series.

Dr. Scott Lenz is on a pace to join Ken Irving as a two-time association champion. He has been practically unbeatable this year in winning all but one of the group's Main Events. Recently at Coos Bay, Lenz won the special shootout race with the local Sportsman Late Model division, and it increased his point lead over Scott Flowers to 51 points. It's been a few seasons since Flowers has won a Main Event, but he has several second place finishes, including the Coos Bay race.

2016 Champion Steve Borror currently holds third in the standings, 46 points behind Flowers. Borror won the season opener in Yreka. The consistent Matt Harlow, who has yet to finish outside the Top 5 in a Main Event this year, is only one point behind Borror in a close battle for third. 14 points behind Borror is Johnny Cobb. The Pro Stocks always put on a good show when they're in town, and a good field is anticipated when they take to Siskiyou Motor Speedway Saturday night.

Though there are no points on the line for the IMCA Sport Modifieds, there is always the bragging rights of being the Main Event winner. In 10 races, only 2016 champion Jimmy Lipke has more than one Main Event victory. Point leader Trevor Tiffee would love to join Lipke as a two-time winner. Tiffee has a 51 point lead on Ryder Boswell, who is still looking for his first win. Boswell has finished as high as second this season on one occasion. Tiffee and Boswell are anticipated this week along with Randy Wright, rookie Ethan Killingsworth and Gary Foster.

The Mini Stock race continues to be close between two-time reigning champion Marlyn Yawnick, two-time champion Mike Whitaker and past champion Terry Kendrick. The last time out, Whitaker picked up his first win of the season to go with two seconds and three thirds. Yawnick has won three times this season along with three seconds, and Kendrick has two seconds and three thirds. Roughly 15 points separate the three in a close championship battle. Zac McMurray is battling Jason Frost for fifth and top rookie honors. McMurray leads by just two points. If not for missing a couple of races, Derek Alford would certainly be in this battle. Alfred had his best finish of the season last time in third after winning his first Trophy Dash earlier in the evening.

The track has also scheduled an Outlaw Open Comp race for Modified and Stock Car drivers who don't quite fit into the other categories. With the other three divisions on the schedule, it should be a great night of racing. Just two other races remain on the schedule, including the Annual Rod Restad Memorial Race on September 22nd.Racing Returns To Siskiyou Motor Speedway On Saturday Night

Championship Night Set For Coos Bay Speedway Saturday

Coos Bay, Oregon...Saturday night is Sponsorship Appreciation/NASCAR Championship Night at Coos Bay Speedway. This is the final opportunity for drivers to make their moves up the point ladder. The Super Late Models will be headlining the program along with the Sportsman Late Models, Street Stocks, Mini Outlaws, Hornets and Jr Stingers.

Brody Montgomery has been a force in the Super Late Model division. Last year, he took the Sportsman Late Model division by storm in a rather dominant season that resulted in the championship. In his first full season in Super Late Models, Montgomery has picked up eight wins, and there's no question that he will be the track champion. Despite a late start, Thor Kristensen has put together 10 Top 5 finishes and moved into second in the standings. Kristensen seems to be knocking on the door to his first win, and that could happen on Saturday night. He leads Chris Ray by 40 points in the battle for second. These three hard chargers are anticipated this week along with Wayne Butler, Kristy Grout, Deven Brown and Richard Wallace.

Wayne Butler has two Sportsman Late Model championships to his credit, and despite a very bad start, the nine-time winner is within 18 points of six-time winner Dyllan Siewell in the championship battle. Time may be running out for Butler as Siewell could be content to finish second to Butler in the Main Event this week and still claim the championship. However, he will will be gunning for another win, and other drivers to watch this week include Tom Williams, Braden Fugate, Justin Krossman and Stacy Robison.

Ken Fox collected his division-leading ninth Street Stock Main Event win last week, and the track championship is all but assured for the double division racer. The two drivers immediately behind him in the points, David Smith and Jeff Thurman, are both hoping to get their first wins of the season. Smith has been very consistent this season with 16 Top 5 finishes. Hard-charger Steve Dubisar will be out to get his fifth win of the season, and other drivers to watch for include Daniel Land, Josh Bearden and Troy Chamberlain.

Sam Talon has successfully defended his Mini Outlaw championship. With 10 wins to his credit in 17 starts, that's never really been in doubt. However, there is still the possibility of another feature win at stake. After getting off to a late start, Ken Fox has notched four wins to move into fourth in the standings. Other drivers to watch for this week include two-time winner Jason Kellum, Tom Siewell and Jason Berrier.

Tyler Tullos has had an impressive season with seven wins and 17 Top 5 finishes in 19 Hornet races, and he is headed for the division championship, while one-time winner April Warmack and three-time winner Hannah Robison are locked in for second and third, respectively. Braden Fugate has moved up to the Sportsman Late Model division, but he still could make a play for his sixth win of the season. There are several drivers hoping to get their first wins, led by fourth-ranked Kris Parker, fifth-ranked Chuck Peck, Leroy Rockwell, Dusty Shingleton and David Pellum.

Rounding out the lineup will be the Jr Stinger division for Hornet drivers 11 to 14 years old. Griff Smith has won everything in sight. The six-time winner has a 74 point advantage over Alex Butler as he is headed for the championship. This division was added as a means to get young drivers into the sport, and other drivers who could be there this week include Sebastian Friedel, James Singleton and Hunter Berrier.

This isn't the last race for the oval track this season, but it's the last opportunity for the drivers to gain valuable NASCAR championship points. It's going to be a great show, but there are still some exciting events left to come before the final checkered flag waves on October 6th for the annual Prather Family Lucas Oil Open Show.  For further information, go to www.coosbayspeedway.us.

Barney Scores Wingless Sprint Car Iron Man Win
At Coos Bay Speedway

Coos Bay, Oregon...September 1...Lindsay Barney won the 30 lap Iron Man Wingless Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Coos Bay Speedway.  The win paid her $1,500 and secured her third in the series point standings.  Barney started on the font row, and series champion Rob Lindsey lined up in 12th starting.  Lindsey steadily worked his way to the front and presented a challenge to Barney in the waning laps.  However, Barney would not be denied what was the biggest win of her career.  Jonathon Joregenson won a good battle with Tim Alberding for the third position.  Lance Hallmark finished fifth, followed by Jake Gillman, Mike Crawford, Nathan Geister, Lawrence Van Hoof and Guy Weedman.

Barney led the 18 Sprint Cars through qualifying with a lap of 15.152.  Lindsey was second quick at 15.188.  Eight lap heat race wins were earned by Jeffrey Hudson, Ryan Stolz and Barney.  Cooper Desbiens beat Barney in the six lap Trophy Dash to prevent a clean sweep.

Braden Fugate returned and won his fifth 30 lap Hornets Main Event.  The drivers were competing for $500 to win with several finishing positions also running for an increased pay.  This brought out some top drivers from other divisions.  Fugate battled Eddie Farness in a close race for the victory.  Leroy Rockewell and Jeff Thurman rounded out the lead lap finishing order in the 22 car race.  Thurman was subbing for Hannah Robison.  Pro Stock point leader Dyllan Siewell finished fifth, followed by April Warmack, Chuck Peck, Ray Marshall, Kris Parker and Gabrielle Boles.  Rockwell, Peyton Reigard and Jeff Thurman were ten lap heat race winners, and Fugate won the five lap Trophy Dash.

Street Stock point leader Ken Fox enjoyed a double win performance.  Fox won his ninth 20 lap Street Stock Main Event by over a straightaway ahead of Stacy Robison, David Smith and Toby McIntyre.  Fox also won a much closer battle with Mini Outlaw champion Sam Talon for that 20 lap feature triumph.  Tom Siewell and Hunter Berrier rounded out the finishing order in that race.  Fox won the ten lap heat races in both divisions as well as the five lap Street Stock Trophy Dash.  Talon won the five lap Mini Outlaw Trophy Dash.

Two-time Sportsman Late Model champion Wayne Butler won that division's 20 lap Main Event by a staightaway ahead of point leader Dyllan Siewell.  Ten lap heat winner Braden Fugate finished third.  Butler won the five lap Trophy Dash.

Next Saturday night is Sponsorship Appreciation/NASCAR Championship Night.  The show will include Super Late Models, Sportsman Late Models, Street Stocks, Mini Outlaws, Hornets and Jr Stingers.  For further information, go to www.coosbayspeedway.us.

Pit Stops

The second running of the R Charles Snyder Salute is in the books, it can only be classified as a success. The longtime voice of Southern Oregon racing and popular radio DJ for over 40 years would be proud to know that the race that bears his name had the biggest car count Southern Oregon Speedway has seen in over a decade. It was also watched by the biggest attendance of the season. Combining the IMCA Sport Modifieds and Modifieds, there were over 90 cars. Combining all of the classes, nearly 140 cars filled the pits during the weekend.

Because this is an IMCA sanctioned event that awards points, it meant there was quite a bit of pressure on the local drivers to perform. This was very apparent in the IMCA Modified division where the big Labor Day event has been known to affect the point race in the past. Albert Gill came into the weekend as the point leader, and he knew he needed to make the Main Event to maintain that advantage. He came into the night in a battle with Zach Fettinger and Nick Trenchard for the point lead.

In Trenchard, you have a driver who has been known to come up big with the money on the line. His long list of big wins includes the Beads Shipwreck Nationals, the John Arnberg Memorial, the Roger Haudenshild Tribute and the Lon Skinner Memorial. Unless something bad happened, it was pretty much a given that Nick would be putting his #54 car into the big show. The pressure was on Gill and Fettinger to do the same. Gill was a heat race winner on qualifying night, but his point total left him just outside the Top 16 point earners. Therefore, he had a front row start in one of the two B Mains on Sunday.

Fettinger, meanwhile, had a disastrous heat race effort that would put him in the back of his B Main. The one thing you can say about Zach is he is a prime candidate for Most Improved Driver honors this year. His three Main Event wins leads the Winner's List at Southern Oregon Speedway this year. He was driving like a winner as he battled his way all the way up to fourth in his B Main. Preston Jones was holding the valuable third position, and though Zach was gaining on him, he needed a yellow flag to make a move. The race would go without one down the stretch, leaving him on the outside looking in.

Gill, meanwhile wasn't about to let the opportunity slip away from him. He led his B Main from the start and picked up his second win of the weekend. By making it into the Main Event, he had more opportunity to gain points. Though Gill didn't move too far forward in the Main Event, Trenchard fell back a little bit and was only a few positions ahead of Gill. What it comes down to is if Gill starts the Main Event at the September 22nd season finale, he will likely win his third Southern Oregon Speedway championship in the last five years.

Drivers were coming from everywhere to compete for the $5,000 first prize. In fact, the money was pretty nice throughout the Top 5 in the Main Event. Bobby Hogge IV is usually money in these situations, and he put himself into a really nice position by winning both of his heat races on Saturday night. In fact, he came very close to picking up the $1,000 Invitational Feature win, but CJ Putnam was just a little bit faster and grabbed an impressive victory. Putnam, who has been doing quite a bit of racing at Cottage Grove this season, got started racing at the little Southern Oregon Speedway track before moving up to become a Dwarf Car champion. He is just as skilled behind the wheel of the Modified.

As one of the Top 8 point eaners, Hogge got to be a part of the redraw and got a front row start for the Main Event. This was bad news for the competition. Once Hogge gets the lead in a race, unless something happens to his car, you don't see him lose it very often. Merced, California Speedway point leader Darrell Hughes II, like Hogge, is a third-generation racer. These two drivers enjoyed a spirited dual for the lead in the Ed Parker Tribute race at Merced a few weeks ago, won by Hughes. Hughes, however, had to work his way up from 10th starting in the Main Event. Once he got to second, he ran with Hogge, but he couldn't quite make the move. Hogge, combining his lap money and Invitational Feature money, picked up over $6,000, while Hughes pocketed $2,500 for second.

Passing honors go to Bricen James. He was definitely the hard charger of the weekend. Because he's competing for points at Willamette Speedway and also leading the IMCA State of Oregon point race, James had to make the commitment to Willamette on Saturday and showed up on Sunday to try to make the big show. He made the transfer out of the B Main and steadily worked his way through the field to an eventual $1,500 third place finish. Not a bad performance as he appears headed for State championship honors this year. James, like several of his peers at Willamette, is fast behind the wheel of whatever car you put him in. This includes Late Models, Modifieds and even Sprint Cars.

From California, two surprise visitors came from the Bakersfield area and occupied the fourth and fifth positions in the Main Event. They were 2nd generation racer Clint Reichenbach and Robby Sawyer. Reichenbach collected $1,000 for the fourth place finish, while the current second place ranked Bakersfield Speedway competitor Sawyer ended up a $700 fifth. To even be in the Top 10 in a talent filled field like this is something to be proud of, and 2016 Speedweek champion Kellen Chadwick ended up sixth, followed by Cottage Grove point lead or Jake Mayden, B Main winner Collen Winebarger, Trenchard and seven-time Southern Oregon Speedway champion Mark Wauge.

In the IMCA Sport Modified division, all of the championship contenders found themselves on the outside looking in for the Main Event, meaning not much will change in the point battle heading into September 22nd. This is good news for 2015 Mini Stock champion David Marble, who is poised to win the championship just by taking the green flag in the finale. Marble has been very consistent with mostly Top 5 feature finishes this season, and he's earned these honors. Branden Wilson came very close to making the transfer in his B Main, but unfortunately he slipped up just a little bit and ended up third.

This happened to be the biggest paying IMCA Sport Modified show on the West Coast with a $2,000 first prize to the winner. For this show last season, the division produced a then track record 31 cars. This time, they obliterated the record with 53 drivers signing in to go racing. Drivers came from all over to take a shot at the win, and this included the return of two-time champion Jorddon Braaten, who was the race champion last season. As the track went dry slick on Sunday, it seemed to be the type of racing condition that would favor the track's All Time winningest driver in this division's history. What he didn't count on was the driver from Antioch, California.

Guy Ahlwardt comes from a racing family. His father Steve was a track official for several seasons at Antioch Speedway and a member of a few different pit crews. Guy built a beautiful Hobby Stock for the 2016 season at Antioch and won the championship that year. A year later, he made his move to the IMCA Sport Modified class. To challenge himself, he started running at different tracks, and he's continued that trend this year, even picking up a win at Watsonville. He had his sights set on the big prize at Southern Oregon Speedway, but it's a fair bet to say that nobody saw him coming.

Ahlwardt picked up a heat race win and a second on Saturday before finishing fourth in the Invitational Feature. After accomplishing that, he made it into the Top 8 and redrew a starting spot on the front row of the Main Event. He moved into the lead from the waving of the green flag. Within the first 8 laps, he had the #84 car of Jorddon Braaten in close pursuit. However, even with several yellow flags sprinkled over the remaining 22 laps, Ahlwardt kept his cool and picked up a well-earned $2,000 victory. Braaten had to be content with a $1,000 second place finish.

Because Jorddon has accomplished so much at Southern Oregon Speedway, he has spent this year on the road testing himself against other drivers and currently leads the points at both Cottage Grove Speedway and Willamette Speedway, while also leading the Oregon IMCA State point race. The second place finish will certainly help keep him in the lead in the State. Daniel Ray has been tough on the circuit this season with multiple wins and he did well in finishing third in the Main Event ahead of second generation leadfoot Braxton Possinger.

The fifth position in the Main Event featured a spirited dual between Jimmy Ford and Matt Sanders. Ford kicked things off on Saturday with a heat race win, and he also finished second to the impressive Tyler Rodgers in the Invitational Feature. Unfortunately, his point totals weren't good enough to put him into the show, and he had to win the B Main that he was in to get into the future. Jimmy made it up to battle Sanders closely in the waning laps for the fifth position, but Sanders made him settle for sixth. Ford said afterwards that he enjoyed the race and looks forward to coming back to Southern Oregon Speedway whenever possible. As a side bit of trivia, only three drivers have been at all of the big Labor Day Weekend Sport Modified events, and they include Ford and two-time champions Dwayne Melvin and Mike Medel.

Merced Speedway racer Tanner Thomas looked very impressive in his battle with fellow Californian Andrew Peckham for a B Main transfer spot. While Justin Foux was doing a stellar job of leading the way in that race behind the wheel of his father's car, Thomas had the second spot, briefly lost it to Peckham, and gained it back. Coming from back in the pack, the second generation racer Thomas finished seventh in the Main Event, followed by Doug Coffman, Bruce Ray, Rodgers and 2016 Yreka champion Jimmy Lipke. Considering how many cars were in the pits, just making the Main Event for the Sport Modifieds was a big accomplishment. If you finished in the Top 10, you can certainly brag about that.

The show ran a bit late, but it also ran with very few breaks. Management wanted to keep the show going, and Race Director Bob Valencia endeavored to make that happen. Travis Snyder dropped the green flag on the IMCA Modified race, and Mark Wauge did the honors of running the Memorial Lap for R Charles Snyder before Sunday's racing began. There was much enthusiasm for this event and great support coming from several great sponsors. It was a team effort, and certainly people like Travis Snyder, Travis Hoppes, Steve Kerstulovich and Claudia Linker made a difference in helping make the show that much bigger.

The Southern Oregon Dwarf Car Association got to be a part of both nights of racing. The Sunday portion was more of a bragging rights situation as the association chose not to make it for points. However, Camden Robustelli didn't want to let an opportunity to race go to waste. He finds himself in a tie with two-time champion Josh King and Chad Cardoza for the lead heading into the September 15th finale. Much like Cardoza, Robustelli has finished as high as second, but he's hoping this will be his year. He picked up his fourth feature win of the season on Sunday in an impressive drive to victory, followed by Nevada visitor Tim Fitzpatrick. It was nice to see the Mod Lite of Jesse Lorentz running up near the front of the pack. He's worked very hard to get the car dialed in, and he did a good job and battling Michael Johnson and John Chrisman for the third position after two-time champion Brock Peters fell out midway through the race. For Johnson, fourth was his best finish yet, and the young rookie also picked up his first ever heat race win after a good race with Fitzpatrick.

Saturday is when the points were on the line. The drivers not only get Main Event points, but heat race points are also factored in. There's a two race throw away rule in case drivers have bad nights or are unable to make a race or two. In fact, Robustelli has missed two races running his Sprint Car. Josh King won a heat race as did title contenders Kalvin Morton and Brock Peters. King was running in contention when Ryan Smith and Morton both fell out near the midway point of the race. Morton is still very close in the championship battle, currently fourth. Once King got the lead, he held off fellow two-time champion Brock Peters for an impressive win. Robustelli finished third, followed by Chad Cardoza and Mason Lewman.

A lot can be said about the Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars this season. They've been bringing great fields of cars, and they have several new drivers joining their ranks. Car count is getting to the point now where B Mains will be needed as they're getting too many cars on the track in these Main Events. They had 24 cars on hand on Saturday, and 23 of them started the Main. Anytime these Dwarf Cars are on the schedule, they are a welcome addition to the program.

Speaking of welcome additions, the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks have been a part of the great tradition of Southern Oregon Speedway racing since the track opened in 1996. The bit of trivia that might interest people is the all time winningest driver in the Speedway's history is eight time Pro Stock champion Frank Word III with over 60 wins. Scheduling didn't quite go as well as hoped in regards to the Pro Stocks, but they were booked for the Roger Haudenshild Tribute and the R Charles Snyder Salute. Wanting to show just how good they could be, there were 22 drivers that showed up to race.

An interesting addition to the field was Chico, California Silver Dollar Speedway point runner up Gary Newman. Newman is a name that fans of Vallejo Speedway may remember in the Stock Car and Hardtop classes. He's 76 years old, he's still running wheel-to-wheel with the best of them and he ended up third in his heat race after starting at the back of the 11 car field. He also got a third in what ended up being an abbreviated Main Event.

After 2016 champions Steve Borror and current point leader and reigning champion Dr. Scott Lenz won their respective heat races, it looked like it might be a shootout between the two drivers. Lenz got caught up in an early race tangle. Because of the time taken to get the race restarted during the yellow flags, the early yellow flags had the division on the track for over 20 minutes before two laps had been completed. This left the division under a time limit crunch, and it was decided to drop the checkered and yellow flags on the Main Event when the yellow flag came out as the drivers were working the third lap. Subbing for Julia Flowers, Dave Quick found himself in the lead at the end of the race, followed by Dan Randall, Newman, Borror and Lenz.

This was not the sort of return the Pro Stock drivers were looking for, but they got some good news during the week. Management has invited the Pro Stock drivers back, and they will be a part of the season finale on September 22nd. They are on the road to Yreka for the next two weeks to settle their championship battle, which is being led by Lenz over Scott Flowers and Borror. The finale at Southern Oregon Speedway will not be for points, but most of the competitors are anticipated. There's even word that there could be some other visitors, including 2018 Billy Geyer Memorial race winner, Mike Learn Jr.

The Outlaw Kart program will be wrapping up point racing this Friday night, and there are some close battles left to be decided. The Beginners Box Stocks have had a battle all season long. Young Carson Henson is just a few points ahead of four-time winner and reigning champion Malachi Johnson. Henson has been very consistent this year and seems poised to get his first win. He finished a very close second to Chayce Smith at the most recent event.

Meanwhile, the Box Stock battle has been a spirited dual between three-time winner Keaton Augustine and two-time winner Ryan Hirschbock. These drivers have been running very closely all season long, but Hirschbock put a whooping on the field last time when he got into the lead and the drivers got jammed up coming out of Turn 2 on the opening lap. By the time Augustine gained second, he was a straightaway behind. These two drivers and Jacob James have been running well all season, and young Taylor Fuller, after winning the opener, has since moved up to focus on his Top 3 effort in the 250 Karts.

Speaking of which, Vinny DeBenedetti is on the cusp of picking up the division championship. The talented second generation racer has done a good job in what has been his first full season in this class, and he's been making the rounds at other tracks as well to gain valuable experience. He leads reigning champion Trevor Grimes. Grimes is only a few points ahead of Fuller in a closer battle for second. But should DeBenedetti fail to start the Main Event for some reason, it's still possible for Grimes or even Fuller to overtake him for the championship.

The UAS Speedway Karts have been an interesting class. They are certainly about as fast as the 500 Open Karts, but it seems sometimes that these Karts are a little bit sensitive and have the drivers feeling every bump on the race track. Larry Fuller, who may have the fastest Kart in the field, missed the last race as he didn't want to beat himself up on the racing surface too much. Steve Rambo, meanwhile, has been on a mission to win everything in sight. He's won the last three Main Events and is on the cusp of the championship. Lori Fuller, meanwhile has done a stellar job of running a 4 Cycle against the faster UAS Speedway Karts and is holding down second in the standings.

Though the Kart program has had its ups and downs in the last couple of years, this season has been a good one for the most part. Count has been up as many of the drivers have run all or most of the season. We've seen an increase in drivers in the Beginners Box Stock class and this is good news as that class will feed drivers into the Box Stocks and beyond. This is the 20th Anniversary season of Little Southern Oregon Speedway, and the outlook is good for the future.
