Late Models Prepare For 10 Race Season
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...The Late Models will be competing at Southern Oregon Speedway this season.  Promoter Mike McCann booked a six race season last year for the Open Stock division, which was open to several different types of Stock Cars.  However, the majority of support came from the Late Model side of things.  After assessing the situation and taking the drivers' thoughts into consideration, McCann has booked an exciting 10 race season for the Late Models this year.  It's the most ambitious schedule for this class in the history of Southern Oregon Speedway.

Rules will be in line with the other tracks in the state to make it possible for drivers to come visit when their own schedules allow.  They will compete for a guaranteed purse, which features a $500 to win first prize, and they will earn championship points.  The purse money is currently equal to what the two closest tracks to Medford offer.

The track has booked a play day for April 15th and a backup playday for April 22nd in case of rainout.  The season kicks off for the track on April 29th, and Late Models are one of the featured classes.  The May 6th and 13th dates mean the Late Model division opens with three races in a row.  After just one race in June (June 10th), There will be two races in July (July 1st and 22nd), two races in August (August 12th and 19th) and the final two races of the season (September 9th and 16th).

Once again, Bob Dees and Mike Linder lead the class into a new season  Dees was supportive of the track's Late Model effort that took place within the last 10 years, but it ended when he was the last driver standing.   Dees and Linder battled for last season's championship, but Bob had his best finish at the last race of the season with heat race and Trophy Dash victories before placing second in the Main Event.  Two time winner Linder settled for second in the standings.

Joining these two hard chargers will be Bob's two sons, John Dees and Garrett Dees.  John was excited to make his division debut a couple races into the season, and he also made a couple of trips out of town with his two teammates.  John finished third in final points.  Garrett Dees had competed in Street Stocks for a few seasons and was one of the last drivers left when the Medford effort ended in 2014.  In fact, Garrett has indicted that he might compete in the Road To The Iron Gian Street Stock race at Medford on May 20th.  He made his Late Model debut in the season finale.  Despite having to use his Street Stock motor, Garrett still finished third in the feature.

Garrett Dees wasn't the only driver making his debut in last season's finale.  Dustin Knight not only made his first start that evening, he served notice to the competition that he will be a force to be reckoned with this season.  Knight has spent the last several seasons as a star of Super 4 racing at Roseburg and other tracks, and he has Pro Stock and Modified championships in Medford..  For the finale, Knight won both his heat race and the Main Event by a wide margin.  Some people are already calling him the driver to beat this year.

Nathan Augustine may have something to say about that.  The 2016 Coos Bay champion made one appearance with teammate Kristy Grout, who is also anticipated this year.  He ended up clean sweeping the show with wins in his heat race, the Trophy Dash and Main Event.  Word is that he has a new car this season.  Should he make a run for the championship, he will be another driver to watch.  Grout, meanwhile, finished third in points at Coos Bay last season.

Several drivers are preparing to join the roster this season.  One of these competitors is Don Garrett Jr.  Garret and Linder have a connection as two drivers who were there at the beginning of the Limited Sprint Car movement almost 25 years ago.  Micro Sprint Car collector and historian Rick Hazen, a past Madras Speedway Modified champion, is planning to make some starts this year.  A little over a decade ago, Hazen picked up his first Late Model win at Willamette Speedway in a huge field of cars.  It was only his ninth start.

Frank Hazen is another Late Model veteran anticipated for some races.  A busy work schedule kept past Street Stock champion Steve Lemley from racing last season, but he should be making his return this season.  Word is there are other drivers preparing cars, some of whom will be familiar names to Medford racing fans.

Though Late Models haven't raced for a championship at Southern Oregon Speedway for very many seasons, the class has made several appearances through the years.  Past champions include Chris Salyer and Roger Lorenizini Jr. (2008), Andy Freeman (2009) and Jeremy Richey (2010).  Through the years, there have been Oregon Late Model Tour races as well as the big open shows that used to end the season.  As the new Late Model effort continues to grow, there is potential for some big events to come to the speedway once again.  This will be the year that Late Models establish themselves as part of the program.  It should be an exciting season.  For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

The Road To The Iron Giant Street Stock Race
Goes Through Southern Oregon Speedway May 20th

White City, Oregon.,.Street Stock racing is still alive in Oregon.  Several tracks have the class, which includes Camaros, Firebirds, Chevelles and Novas, among other models.  The big show on the calander for the division is the Iron Giant Race at Willamette Speedway on September 2nd and 3rd.  Thar race is the highest paying Street Stock race of the year and attracted over 50 entries last year.

However, there are drivers sprinkled throughout the state who want to compete against the best competitors at as many different tracks as possible.  This is where Chris Sine comes in.  A past champion at Cottage Grove Speedway, Sine has put together an eight race schedule that will run at seven different dirt tracks and one pavement track from April 29th at Sunset Speedway in Banks to the Iron Giant race at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Oregon on September 2nd and 3rd.

The series is being billed as the Road To The Iron Giant.  It will feature a minimum of $1000 to win the 50 lap Main Events.  This will be an opportunity to find out who is the best of the best in Oregon Street Stock racing.  On May 20th, the road goes through Southern Oregon Speedway.  It marks the first time the track has had a Street Stock race since 2014.

From 2010-2014, Southern Oregon Speedway had a Street Stock division, but rule changes midway through that run led to a drop in car count and the ultimate demise of the class.  After a non point season, track champions included IMCA Modified racer Duane Orsburn (2011-2012), IMCA Sport Modified champion Jorddon Braaten (2013) and Pro Stock star Miles Deubert (2014).  Last year, Street Stock champions were crowned at six different tracks in Oregon.

Much like his father Bob in Late Models, Garrett Dees was the last driver standing in Street Stocks at Medford, forcing him to travel up north to the other tracks to do his racing.  Though Garrett will be running Late Models this season, he is hoping to participate in the big May 20th event in Medford.  Garrett remains a big fan of the class and would endorse the effort to bring Street Stock racing back more often.  In fact, Hornets star Joby Shields and Outlaw Kart owner Brad Bergquist have said they could get behind a Street Stock revival in Medford, should it ever come to be.

For now, this series is the perfect thing for drivers wanting to travel and test themselves against other competitors and different racing conditions.  Sine reports that several others are chomping at the bit to run the tour.  The $1000 to win prize and 50 lap distance for these races makes it further enticing.  Sine is working on securing race sponsorships and putting together a point fund for the Top 10 Tour regulars.  This should be the biggest Street Stock race in Southern Oregon Speedway history.

Oregon still has an active Street Stock scene, and six of the tracks in the series have their own divisions, while Madras and River City Speedways' races are being billed as Street Stock vs Sportsman Challenge races.  2016 Street Stock champions include Andrew Langan (Cottage Grove Speedway), Mikey Brakeall (Willamette Speedway), Arnie Case (Sunset Speedway), Justin McMullen (River City Speedway), Matt Klass (Douglas County Speedway) and Daniel Land (Coos Bay Speedway).

A partial look inside the numbers finds Kyle Yeack winning the Iron Giant 50 lap race at Willamette last year and pocketing $5,000 in the biggest paying Street Stock race anywhere on the West Coast.  He was also the winner of the previous Iron Giant race.  There were 40 Street Stock races held between Cottage Groove, Willamette and Sunset Speedways last season with 18 different winners.  Only Yeack and Cottage Grove point runnerup Sine won at two tracks with wins at both Willamette and Cottage Grove.  Arnie Case had the high total with eight wins at Banks, compared to six wins for Sine and three wins each for Yeack and Justin Evans.

The Medford race on May 20th follows the Sunset Speedway opener on April 29th.  It offers the local drivers an opportunity to make a statement of what interest is still out there in bringing a local effort back.  The Series heads to Madras Speedway (June 3rd), River City Speedway (June 10th), Cottage Grove Speedway (June 24th), Douglas County Speedway (July 29th), Coos Bay Speedway (August  26th) and Willamette Speedway (September 2nd-3rd).  Sine is already hard at work securing sponsorship money, and anybody interested in supporting the effort or finding the latest news can go to the Official Facebook Page.  For further news on track happenings, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Outlaw Pro Stock Association Releases 2017 Schedule

Klamath Falls, Oregon...The 2017 schedule for the Outlaw Pro Stock Association has been released, and it is a schedule befitting an organization that is entering its sixth season of operation.  The OPSA will visit Siskiyu Motor Speedway in Yreka eight times and Southern Oregon Speedway in White City four times.  2017 will also mark a first time collaboration between the OPSA and the Nevada Outlaw Pro Stock Association.

Newly elected OSPA President Scott Flowers and the board has been hard at word landing many good sponsors to help make this season bigger and better.  The season kicks off in Yreka on April 22nd with the first race at Southern Oregon Speedway a week later.  The rapid fire start of the season continues on May 6th with the Third Annual Billy Geyer Memorial Race.  Winning this race is an accomplishment in itself, and it will be a non point event.

The Billy Geyer Memorial is a 50 lap race.  The leader at 25 laps will receive $750.  The field will be inverted at the halfway point.  The leader at the checkered flag will win $1750.  All Main Event starters are guaranteed $100 minimum.  Second place is worth $400 and third is $300.  Aaron Amuchastegui Construction, Calculated Comfort, Lucas Oil and John Bowers Construction have all come on board to sponsor this big race, and The Human Bean Coffee will be sponsoring giveaways for some lucky fans that night.

An added bonus to the Billy Geyer Memorial is the fact that the Nevada Pro Stock Association has put the race on their schedule as a non points race and is encouraging their competitors to support it.  In turn, the OPSA has added the Gordon Russell Memorial in Cedarville on June 24th to their schedule as a non point race.  Another marquee night on the Pro Stock schedule is the Roger Haudenshild Tribute on June 3rd.

The OPSA is still hard at work landing sponsors, and three races have already been sponsored as of the initial schedule release.  They are also bringing in sponsors for point fund and contingency awards.  The sponsors partnering up with the OPSA so far include John Bowers Construction and Landscaping, Basin Machine Shop of Klamath Falls, Aaron Amuchastegui Construction, Calculated Comfort Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration of Medford, Babcock's Garage of Klamath Falls, Super 8 Hotels of Medford and Central Point, 1st Class Auto Glass and Lucas Oil Products.  Making such a great season happen would not be possible without all of these very fine sponsors.

With 13 race dates secured and sponsors coming on board to help make each and every race special, it's all about who will write their name into the record book as the group's sixth champion.  The man to beat last year was Steve Borror.  Borror blazed a trail to eight Main Event triumphs last year as he won the championship, and his accomplishments included wins in both the Haudenshild and Geyer races.  Steve has been lightning quick these past two seasons, and you know you've earned a win when you beat him.

It's been a couple of years since Pro Stock veteran Scott Flowers has won a Main Event, though he finished as high as second on multiple occasions last year.  He also lost the championship by just 30 points.  You might say the road to the championship has gone through him as the point runnerup for these past three seasons.  The Flowers family has been racing for several years, but last season was extra special.  Thanks to people like Arlen Garrison, Scott got to race against his wife Ginny, their son James and daughter Julia for the first time.

Young Julia followed older brother James' path through the Outlaw Karts, but she didn't stay long.  She knew she wanted to race with her family in a Pro Stock.  Julia did an excellent job of staying out of trouble and finishing most of her races to rank sixth with "Rookie Of The Year" honors last year.  Meanwhile, James also finished second on multiple occasions, but motor problems late in the season took their toll on him and dropped him to fourth behind Matt Harlow.  Like his father, James should be a threat for Main Event wins this year, and don't count Julia out in the quest to win some races as well.

Like the Flowers family and Borror, several competitors in the group call Klamath Falls home, including Johnny Cobb, John Bowers, Scott Bennett, Roy Bain and Rick Lukens.  We should be seeing all of them this year as well as third ranked Harlow, who came very close to winning his first feature late in the season with a pair of Top 3 finishes.  Bowers was third in OPSA points in 2013 and second a year later, while Cobb ranked fourth in 2015.  Bennett had dismal luck last year following his sixth place season of 2015.  All of these drivers and more will give the fans plenty of excitement once the green flag drops.

Racing season will commence on April 22nd in Yreka and continue at Southern Oregon Speedway a week later.  The Billy Geyer Memorial is when the drivers pay tribute to their friend on May 6th.  Indications are that this will be a good year for the Outlaw Pro Stock Association.  More announcements are coming as everybody prepares their cars for the season opener.  For further information, go to https://outlawprostock.wixsite.com/association/.

NASCAR Sanctioning The Latest Change
At Coos Bay Speedway

Coos Bay, Oregon...The Oregon racing community was buzzing earlier this year with the news that Chuck Prather had sold his track of the last 12 years, Coos Bay Speedway, to Drake and Kimberly Nelson.  Prather, who received the prestigious Orville The Daredevil Clown Award at WARPA for his dedication to the sport, cited a desire to focus on other projects as a reason for stepping aside.  His Coos Bay legacy includes turning the paved track into a racy three-eighth mile clay oval, maintaining a successful drag racing program and having Mud Bog events.  Two of the track's top divisions in recent years have been Winged Sprint Cars and Late Models.

The move by Nelson might have come as a surprise to some.  He was raised in a racing family and worked at both Coos Bay Speedway and Douglas County Speedway before heading to Macon Speedway in Illinois for the last two years.  However, Drake and Kimberly wanted to move back to Coss Bay and raise their two children in the community.  He also had a few ideas in mind for what to try in his first season as promoter.  Coos Bay might come in under the radar for some, but Drake grabbed the headlines this past week with his announcement of a NASCAR Whelen Racing Series sanctioning.

This was a move that may have surprised a few people, but NASCAR at Coos Bay is nothing new.  In fact, the old paved track held four NASCAR West races, two of which were won by Jack McCoy and one by Jack Jeffrey in the 1970's and the most recent was won by Rick Carelli in 1993.  The NASCAR announcement is big news for Super Late Model racers, who will enter the Division 1 program and compete for National, State and Track points.

The point fund money is impressive.  The Top 10 drivers in points at Coos Bay are guaranteed point fund money, and the champion takes home $3000.  The runnerup is set to earn $2000, while the third place driver gets $1200.  These three drivers will likely pick up the State point fund money as Coos Bay is the only NASCAR sanctioned track in Oregon.  That's an additional $2000 for the champion.  Furthermore, "Rookie Of The Year" honors will earn that driver a $1000 payday at the end of the season.  Late Model drivers will be required to buy a $200 NASCAR license, but the money on the line will see a quick return on that investment.

This begs the question of who will be the driver to beat in the championship battle?  The reigning champion is Nathan Augustine, who won twice last year and once in Medford.  Augustine rose through the ranks at Coos Bay as a Mini Stock star back in 2010.  He has sold his championship car, but he has a new car in the works.  Teammate Kristy Grout, who was third in points last season and came up from the Sportsman class before that, will be out to get some of that prize money.

When you talk Late Models in Coos Bay, you have to talk about the McIntyre family.  Toby McIntyre has won over a half dozen races in the last three seasons and is the 2015 champion.  He didn't race full time last season, though he won the last two races.  Trina Post wasn't active last season, but the money may get the 2014 champion back in action again.  Chuck Bracelin, Preston Luckman and David Schmidt are three other stars who could return.  Rising star Thor Kristenson, veteran Tom Parry, Bill Hitner an Chris Ray are other drivers to watch for.  Kristenson finished second in points last season, while Hitner was third a year earlier.

One of the thoughts in making the NASCAR move is that this could bring drivers into Coos Bay from outside the area.  Oregon still has some very competitive Late Model drivers on the circuit.  The move to NASCAR may also catch the attention of some of the Sportsman stars.  Two names who would immediately become contenders for the $1000 "Rookie Of The Year" award are Wayne Butler and Dyllan Siewell.  Siewell was second in points last season and top rookie in Sportsmans, while Butler captured his second straight championship.

The NASCAR Late Models won't be the only reason to come to Coos Bay Speedway.  They also have an entertaining Sprint Car Class, and competitive racing in Sportsmans, Hornets, Mini Outlaws and Street Stocks.  A look at the 2016 Champions List finds Augustine and Butler joined by Dave May (Sprint Cars), Jeremiah Reiber (Hornets), Ryder Johnson (Mini Outlaws) and Daniel Land (Street Stocks).

There will be lots of information in the days ahead, including the full 2017 schedule.  The season kicks off on April 1st with Winged Sprints, Super Late Models, Sportsman Late Models, Street Stocks, Mini Outlaws, Hornets and UTV Side By Sides.  April 15th and 29th also have dates scheduled on the fast three-eighth mile clay oval.  For further information, go to www.coosbayspeedway.us.

 Pit Stops - Jefferson Edition

Southern Oregon Speedway is reportedly set to make a big announcement regarding officiating.  One key position is the Race Director post.  Race Director was an unfilled position last season after arrangements could not be made to bring in the person who had been considered.  Promoter Mike McCann served in that role last season, but he wants to have the freedom to roam and know that this job is being handled.  The announcement will be made soon, but this is a person who has been involved in racing in Medford for several years and is respected.

Next order on the agenda is the Outlaw Karts banquet on March 1st at Abby's Pizza.  The Top 5 competitors in the four Outlaw Kart classes will be honored.  The schedule is nearly ready to be released.  Word is that this will be an eight race season with some special nights on the schedule.  The hold up on the schedule's release is due to confirming certain dates.  It should be available soon.  While Medford prepares to crown its Kart champions, two of its stars, Bodee Weiser (250 Karts) and Natalie Richard (Box Stocks) are Roseburg Indoor Series champions.

Meanwhile, Tanner Holmes is poised to win the 250 Karts championship at Red Bluff, but the season isn't quite done for the current point leader.  Younger sister Carley Holmes was fifth in Box Stocks at last check, while Medford champion Trevor Grimes is 7th.  Trevor's younger sister and Medford champion Kiley Grimes is seventh in Beginner Box Stocks.  Meanwhile, Medford open 500 Kart star Mike Wheeler is a close second in that division's race.  Wheeler wins everywhere he goes and is reportedly set to compete in the new Winged 360 Sprint Car Challenge Series this year in California.

One more Kart item is just a little bit of speculation in light of the rise of the new 600cc Mini Late Model class.  There are Mini Cup cars that ran on the pavement that are currently just sitting around these days as that movement fades.  What would be the feasibility of converting something like that to dirt and running it on the Kart track?  What made this such an interesting thought was the fact that there was a Shasta based competitor who was selling six cars, a chassis and various spare parts for $8,000.

Back to Tanner Holmes, he is reportedly set to make a move up to the Limited Sprint Car class this year, which is the rule set that will be used in Medford.  Car count was an issue last season due to the fact that certain Winged 360 teams would not compete and help build the class as the purse did not meet their requirement.  It was apparently worth nothing to them that Mike McCann is committed to building a Sprint Car class and has a record of starting it wherever he has promoted, including Cottage Grove Speedway, Sunset Speedway and Marysville Speedway.  Neither did they take into consideration that the program in Medford had been run down so badly in recent years that the money wasn't there for a bigger purse.

Though Medford has had a Sprint Car effort of some kind for years, the ten dates booked last year was one of the strongest commitments ever made by management there.  Ten dates is again the plan this year after an effort to cooperate with Cottage Grove on race dates cost the track a date.  Holmes isn't the only driver ready to go racing.   David Hibbard, who has been a leader this offeseason in helping make this thing happen, is on board along with Bailey Hibbard, Merissa Henson, Jeffrey Hudson, Camden Robustelli and Todd Whipple.  We've heard names like Foster and Cory mentioned as well.  With more driver support, this will help the effort to turn things around at the track and establish a strong Sprint Car class in Medford.

Another card being played by McCann is the Late Model card.  Though the area has had several Late Model drivers through the years, and the old "Posse Grounds" track featured them for years, no real effort has been made to cultivate that in the 22 year history of Southern Oregon Speedway.  They have, however, had big events through the years.  Mike Linder and champion  Bob Dees, along with Bob's sons Garrett and John, have enthusiastically made the case as to why Open Stocks have become Late Models with a ten race schedule this season.

Coming on board at the end of 2016 was Late Model Lites star Dustin Knight, who has won championships in Pro Stocks and Modfieds in Medford.  Don Garrett Jr., who shares a connection with Mike Linder as a pioneer of the Limited Sprint effort in Yreka in the early 1990's, also has a Late Model, and other drivers are talking.  Late Models have always been a popular division with the fans, and management wants it known that they are intent on building the class here.

It's not a case of either or.  IMCA Modifieds have ten dates of their own, and the growing IMCA Sport Modifieds are there as well.  It is IMCA sanctioned as the racers have requested.  Medford's car base in Modifieds is said to be in the 30's, and it wasn't too many years ago (2010) that B Mains would happen in races other than just the big shows.  It is hoped that this can happen again or at the very least, car count will increase.  The Medford stars anticipated this year include such hard chargers as two time champion Albert Gill, Jesse Bailey, James Welshonse, Nick Trenchard, Duane Orsburn, Bo Shields, Andy Freeman and Ray Kniffen Jr.

It's year #6 for the IMCA Sport Modifieds, and all indications are that this will be the biggest season yet.  We should be seeing more ten car plus fields, led by reigning champion Mike Medel and two time champion Jorddon Braaten.  Another two time champion, Dwayne Melvin is another driver anticipated, along with the return of Pro Stock and early Sport Mod front runner Rob Fitzsimmons.  With past Mini Stock champions like David Marble, Rich McCoy and Toby Judd, along with hard chargers like A.J. Parker, Tony Bartell, Willie McFall and rookie Kalvin Morton, this should be a good season.

The addition of the Sport Mods in 2012 hastened the need for a Pro Stock Association to keep the class alive.  The group didn't actually have any dates of their own in Medford that year, though the drivers supported a B Mod race here or there.  Pro Stocks were a vital part of Medford racing for years and had some big races and car counts.  McCann decided to put the class back on the official roster with its own championship race for the first time since 2011.  Racers are wondering where that leaves them.  It leaves them with nine dates, a good set of rules, tech and end of the night payoffs.  The association is also putting a schedule together.

The deck is stacked with divisions at Medford, including those beautiful ORTO Hardtops, Dwarf Cars and four different four cylinder classes.  This is because the Pro 4 West Series has been added to the special Open Wheel Showcase event on May 27th (along with North West Focus Midgets, Pennzoil Sprints and OTRO Hardtops), a week after the Road To The Iron Giant Street Stock show.  There are probably ten different Ferrando family members who have raced these unique and really cool looking four cylinder cars at tracks like Sunset, Madras and Cottage Grove.  The class has been running indoors at Salem these days, and "Papa" Tom Ferrando and Tobey Ferrando are the last two champions.  A field of a half-dozen cars is anticipated.

Of course, the JOAT Labs Hornets grew and should grow more this year, the newly renamed Valley Stor-All Late Model Lites are back from the ashes and Mini Stocks had their best season in years.  All are expected to do well this year.  Most of the Hornet stars of last year, champion Tim Hedges with three cars, Joby Shields, Gabe Nelson taking over from his father Derrel Nelson Jr., and John Hoult are anticipated.  Mini Stock mainstays David Steele and Gary Anderson may be the drivers to beat as champion Bob Burkett cuts back on his schedule and goes Late Model Lites racing.  This is the perfect opportunity for guys like Andrew Hall, Kristopher Mix, Dillen Lausen and Mikey Johnson to step things up and make it to the winner's circle.

Late Model Lites competitors will have to beat the reigning champion, Lee Doty.  However, word out of the Rapp Racing shop  is that there could be a few cars coming from there.  Through the years, many fast cars have been fielded from Rapp Racing.  We're also told that Burkett has purchased a really nice car, but we knew he wasn't moving up to just be a part of the pack.  John Barger, Dan Prewett, Charlie Eaton, Terry and Krista Hadley, Eric Aos, Bill Spencer and Mike Cloud will be among the drivers to watch this year.

McCann is obviously excited about the big Wild West Speedweek Modified Race on June 24th and the Dwarf Car Nationals on August 4th and 5th.  Let's not forget the Roger Haudenshild Tribute along with "Crack The Whip" races on June 3rd.  The Lon Skinner Memorial Race will happen on September 2nd and 3rd.  However, there are now two open wheel events to look forward to.  The May 27th Open Wheel Showcase will feature Northwest Focus Midgets, Pennzoil Winged Sprint Cars, OTRO Hardtops and the Pro 4 West Series.  However, the big news is the Herz Precision Parts Cascade Sprint Car Challenge race on August 26th.  This Wingless Sprint Car event will pay $3000 to win.  Fans in Medford haven't really had an opportunity to see much Wingless Racing, and this will be a show they won't want to miss.  Further information can be found at www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

The Northern Sprint Tour Speedweek Series was just in jeopardy as of late last year.  Word was that a prominent promoter was not going to book them.  Medford was never contacted, though it wasn't a slam dunk anyway.  The Tour organizers had Cottage Grove, while Yreka and Coos Bay were pretty much on board and waiting for that phone call.  When Jerry Schram put Willamette and Sunset Speedways back on the schedule, the Winged 360 Sprint Car Speedweek Series returned.  It actually kicks off on Monday, July 10th at Siskiyou Motor Speedway in Yreka and continues on at Coos Bay, Willamette, Sunset and then concludes with two races at Cottage Grove.  It will be interesting to see if car count numbers can rebound this year.

The bigger problem remains the declining state of Winged 360 Sprint Car racing in Oregon.  Saying that the promoters have to throw money at it isn't the only remedy.  Racers need to support it, grow a car count and build a fan base that demands the money.  With ten dates, Cottage Grove Speedway remains Winged 360 Sprint Car headquarters in Oregon with some big races.  Drivers looking to run their cars will either have to tow there, support Speedweek or both.  The future of the class depends on the racers.  The Limited rules package seems to be what's building car count now as The Grove and Medford will have classes.  However, this could work out well for the Winged 360 Sprint Car effort in Oregon.  We also shouldn't forget the Winged Sprint Car class that's been flying in under the radar at Coos Bay.  Opportunities are still there to build a division that Oregon can be proud of.

Meanwhile, At Siskiyou Motor Speedway

Yreka management put out a call to any division that could produce four cars and wanted to race at Siskiyou Motor Speedway.  The easiest car counts to build up would seem to be Hornets and Hobby Stocks.  The Hobby Stocks would be Yreka's chance to build something unique to them as their closest neighbors in Medford don't have them.  A few of the Medford Hornet drivers have already expressed interest in towing there.  The Hornet class should have happened a couple years ago.  As for Hobby Stocks, who knows if any compatible cars are in Yreka, but a phone call to the right person in Orland or Chico could get enough cars for a race.

The Winged 360 Sprint Car drivers in Medford who now aren't legal to race there might want to make a phone call, but the lack of the purse required would likely keep most of the remaining big names away.  Would there be enough drivers willing to run for less?  It seems like a longshot.  IMCA Modifieds are featured regularly again at Yreka this year along with the O'Reilly Auto Parts IMCA Sport Modifieds and McDonald's Mini Stocks.  Sport Mods and Mini Stocks did the "heavy lifting" last year as the reliable classes, but the Modifieds supported the track's three marquee events (Speedweek, the Arnberg Race and Restad Race).

Through the years, there have been some good Modified racers who have come through the gates in Yreka.  Lenny Toolanen, much like his brother John "Pudge" Toolanen, is a past champion.  Lenny did race some last year as did Roger Lorenzini Jr. and Stan Gunderson.  One very supportive racer in recent years who was absent last year was Pablo Duran.  Top 5 competitor Todd Whipple focused on his Sprint Car last year when he was able to go racing and plans to do the same this year.  Josh Cullen, Chris Cullen and James Berry are a few others who weren't seen last year.  A key to putting something on the track for the fans to enjoy may be the return of these drivers.  It's likely that Albert Gill, Duane Orsburn, James Welshonse and Ray Kniffen Jr. may race at least from time to time.

Yreka is high on their IMCA Sport Modified class, and who could blame them?  They had a breakout year last season, and you didn't know who was going to win from week to week.  Only Jorddon Braaten and Colton Cheffey won more than once.  Cheffey may be the driver to beat this year as the talented teen takes aim at the championship.  When you have drivers like reigning IMCA champion Jimmy Lipke, 2015 champion Colter Boswell, Garrett Hamilton and Doug Franklin in the fold, it makes for an exciting show.  The Arnberg/Hittson/Caveye Memorial weekend event on May 26th and 27th is the one the drivers all mark on their calendars.  Sport Mods also support the Wild West Modified Speedweek Race on June 23rd and the Rod Restad Race on September 23rd.  There's also a big race set for July 4th.

Mini Stocks get to come out and play on July 4th and at the Caveye Memorial on Memorial Day Weekend  The Mini Stocks have been a staple class in Yreka for many years, and drivers have been known to move up after doing well here, such as Colter and his brother Ryder Boswell.  Last year was a break out year for division booster "Big Mac" Marilyn Yawnick, who bested young gun Ethan Killingsworth for the championship.  The rising young star Killingsworth will seek to dethrone Yawnick this year.  "The Holy Terror" Terry Kendrick is a past Mini Stock champion and was a close third last year, and he may have something to say about things.  There's also 2014 champion "Magic" Mike Whitaker, who had a disappointing 2016 season, but he shouldn't be counted out this year.  Drivers like Mike Colson, Mike Frost, Dennis Jorgensen and Aaron Jorgensen are among the roster of stars to watch in Yreka this year.

Last year saw the track get its Outlaw Kart program back up and running on the smaller one-eighth mile dirt oval.  This was a work in progress, and they debuted an improved track at season's end.  This is the "Field" of dreams for the future stars of racing.  Classes include the 500 Karts, 250 Karts, Box Stocks, Beginner Box Stocks and Speedway Karts.  They generally ran their races in the afternoon before running the bigger track races last year.  As they continue to dial the smaller track in, the Yreka Outlaw Kart program will get even better.

We were going over this article without info on the added classes on the bigger Yreka track or the Outlaw Kart track schedule, but the Outlaw Kart track news just broke.  There will be a 13 race season this year, beginning on April 28th with two races per month and three each in June and September.  The bigger news is their decision to switch to a Friday night program opposite their closest neighbors in Medford.  With new clay on the revamped race track, management is feeling pretty confident about having a good season.

The official signal that racing season is upon us in Yreka is the Sportsman Expo Car Show & Shine on Saturday, March 11th from 9am to 6pm.  Several drivers show off their cars, the fans get to meet the drivers and the track spreads the word about the coming season.  The Expo continues on March 12th, with a racing exhibition planned that day from 11am to 4pm.  For further information, check out www.siskiyoumotorspeedway.com.

The Latest From Hayfork Speedway

Reaching into the "Grab Bag" for news from some of our Jefferson tracks that you don't hear much from, Hayfork Speedway will be back for more racing at the Trinity County Fairgrounds.  The big news this offseason was the news that Kasper family patriarch Bill Kasper, himself a champion, has retired and sold his car to Josh Smith.  Josh has a Pro Stock as well, but he was one of the drivers in the Hobby Stocks who won races as they established the class in the beginning.  He said he didn't like the way his time in the class ended, and he wants to come back and get a little redemption.  The Kasper family is still well represented by reigning champion Kevin Kasper and William Kasper, and there is also Burl Richardson and Russ "The Newmanator" Newman to consider.  Hobby Stock racing will continue to entertain the fans in Hayfork, and we're hoping to get access to full results to spread the word about all of the drivers who make it happen in Hayfork.

The Mini Stocks had some excitement as Ross Vige would tow from Orland to run his Mini Truck.  Weaverville's Andy Blackburn and 2015 champion Jack Turner also made things interesting.  The track will still run Pro Stocks, Enduros and has added Quads.  Word is that points will be kept in all classes for any of the racers who want to race for points.  Hayfork Speedway was the first track to release a schedule in October of last year.  There are 11 dates, though we haven't heard when the big Clyde Cordell Memorial Race will take place.  They will run on August 12th during the Trinity County Fair, which was a big race last season.  Further information can be found at www.hayforkspeedway.com.

News From Susanville

In Lassen County in the town of Susanville, Diamond Mountain Speedway is back for another ten race schedule for IMCA Modifieds, Stock Cars and Mini Stocks.  Last season, they did get a visit from some of the Quincy IMCA Sport Modified racers, and this year they are adding the class.  Marquee events include the July 4th race and a night of racing during the Lassen County Fair on July 23rd.  It's interesting to note that the Fair Board recently put out a call for a logo designer as they look to revamp their shirt design.  You can e-mail them at lcfair@co.lassen.ca.us if interested.

A check of the point standings from last year finds Chris Nieman just barely winning the IMCA Modified point battle by four points ahead of 2015 champion Matt Murphy.  Mitch Murphy, past champion Jeff Chew, Larry McCracken, Late Model veteran Bill Pearson and past champion Chris Olexiewicz were among the stars last year to watch for this season.  Richard Longacre remains one of the stars of the Stock Car class and beat Nathan Howard by just 17 points for the championship last season.  Other stars of 2016 to watch for include Fred Kresge, Jason Emmot, Ian Upton, Victor Richey, Shayna Robertson, Chris Annas, Mike Nichols and Steve Goss.

It seems like Larry Whitebird is always in the hunt for a Mini Stock championship.  His 2014 and 2016 championships were interrupted by 2015 titlist Kyle Belli, who finished third in points last season.  Whitebird won the 2016 championship by 34 points over Billy Gibson.  Other stars to watch for this year include Larry Foster, Joe Marlow, Wyatt Spalding, Megan Wilson and Robert Feller.  We're not sure who is on board with the new IMCA Sport Modified division, but this class is growing across the nation and is sure to grow in Susanville as well.  Further information can be found at https://lassencountyfair.org/interim-events/diamond-mountain-speedway/.

American Valley Speedway News

American Valley Speedway in Quincy does have their schedule out now.  One of this columnist's biggest frustrations in trying to spread the word about tracks in Jefferson that don't get much coverage is the track in Quincy.  It's an exercise in frustration to even get finishes.  They have a nice show up there and have a good working relationship with Susanville.  They did a NAPA Gold Series between the two tracks last year, but we haven't heard if this will continue this season.  A 2017 schedule has been released and features 13 race dates, including a two race weekend for the WSDCA Dwarf Car Nationals on May 5th and 6th.

IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Stock Cars, Mini Stocks and Dwarf Cars are featured at American Valley Speedway, and the Nevada Pro Stock Association will race on June 3rd and July 15th.  We don't know who the champions were in all of the classes last season, but we can tell you that Chris Nieman beat Chase Nieman by just two points for the IMCA Modified title as Jeff Olschowka, Erica Buhr, Matt Murphy, James Smith and Bill Pearson are other stars to watch for this year.  Ryan Svensson captured the IMCA Sport Modified title by 18 points over Brittney Nieman last year as Joseph Wood, Robert Patterson and Damian Merritt were among the competitors helping grow the class last season.  Further information can be found at http://www.americanvalleyspeedway.com/.

News From Coos Bay Speedway

Coos Bay Speedway racers are talking about the change in ownership of the track.  After several seasons at the helm, veteran Promoter Chuck Prather has sold the facility to Drake & Kimberly Nelson.  Prather went out on top at the WARPA Promoter's Meeting as he received the prestigious Orval The Daredevil Clown award for his years involved in promoting auto racing.

Drake comes into this with several years of experience himself.  He is hard at work lining up sponsorship and bringing in new officials and employees for several positions.  As this is the start of a new era, this would be a golden opportunity for a writer/announcer to step in and help spread the word.  They are looking for both.  The full schedule is as of yet unreleased.

What we can tell you is they are still planning to feature Winged Sprint Cars, Late Models, Sportsman Stock Cars, Street Stocks, Hornets, Mini Outlaws and Side By Side UTV's.  There is a movement to get IMCA Sport Modifieds on the roster, and you never know what can happen.  They do have a Sprint Car Speedweek race for July 11th, a big Wingless Sprint Race for September 2nd, the popular Eve of Destruction on July 8th, a big WSDCA Dwarf Car Regionals race on June 30th and July 1st and other attractions planned for during the season, which kicks off on April 1st.

A check of last season's totals finds Dave May winning the Sprint Car title by 32 points ahead of Scott Fox as Ken Fox, Erin Lyons and Lawrence Van Hoof completed the Top 5.  Nathan Augustine won the Late Model championship ahead of Thor Kristensen, Kristy Grout and Tom Parry.  Wayne Butler maintained his status on top of the Sportsman point list ahead of impressive rookie Dylan Siewell, Tom Williams, Josh Kralichek and Charlie Withers.  Daniel Land was Street Stock champion ahead of Michael Land, Dustin Hitner, Tim Young and Jeff Krossman.  Ryder Johnson grabbed the Mini Outlaw crown by 11 points ahead of John Henry, Samuel Talon and Michael Greenway.  Jeremiah Reiber commanded the Hornets class as Jeremy Beard, Ryan Siewell, Sam Taylor and Jason Greer made up the Top 5.

The Hornets were the strongest class most of the season, though the Sprint Cars, Sportsman and Late Models all had their moments.  Only a few dates are listed for the 2017 schedule as of this writing, but it will all be available soon on the revamped website, www.coosbayspeedway.us.

Note:  This literally just came across the desk this morning.  Coos Bay Speedway has joined the NASCAR Whelen All American Series.  Late Models are now racing for a $3,000 track championship with the Top 10 getting point fund money.  The Top 3 will compete for State points with a $2,000 prize to the champion.  The "Rookie Of The Year" receives $1000.  Since nobody else in Oregon is NASCAR, all of that money will be going to Coos Bay Speedway racers.  Management is counting on more drivers coming to race, and they may be right.  The story is developing, and a NASCAR press release is forthcoming.

Shasta Speedway News

In Anderson, Shasta Speedway is mourning the loss of longtime announcer Gary Cressey.  Cressey was also a leader in the effort to preserve racing history in the area.  Preserving the race track was the goal of Dave Twyman when he came in at the 11th hour and brokered a deal with the fair board to run a limited schedule last season.  Late Models, Modifieds, Bombers, Hornets, Street Stocks and Vintage Super Modifieds were a part of the show during the 2016 season as Twyman and crew worked hard to put this race track back on the right path.

At the end of January, Twyman released a tentative 11 race schedule.  Late Models, Bombers, Hornets and Legend Cars are the core four divisions.  The season opens with the core four divisions on April 15th.  Vintage Open Wheel cars will be on hand on April 28th and 29th, and the season closes with the Lloyd Burton Memorial Show, featuring Modifieds and the core four classes on September 23rd.  Other scheduling adjustments could happen as they nail things down, including the big NASCAR K&N Series Race on June 17th, plus they will have an area in the infield for Kart races.  More info will be announced soon.

Last season, Late Model feature winners included Eric Wendt, Brian Kaminsky and Jeremy Doss as Eric Gannon, Buddy Cox, Ryan Peoples and Doug Atkins were other division stars.  David Dillinger Jr. was a multi time Bomber feature winner as Duane Hoffman, David Braund and David Dillinger Sr. were other stars.  Dirt and pavement racer Dustin Hills and Pete Smith Sr. were Hornet feature winners and Danielle Hills, Brian Ruhl and Anthony Bigley were among the other competitors.  The Hills family fielded four cars.  Shasta Speedway has a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ShastaSpeedway/.

News From Roseburg

In Roseburg, the PRA is hard at word putting together a schedule and season for Douglas County Speedway.  This is the only paved oval track operating on the southern side of Oregon, and some big races are planned, following the April 30th season opener for Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hornets, Hardtops and the new Banger class.  May 20th is an NSRA Winged Sprint Car visit, June 17th is a Northwest Super Late Model Series race, Hardtops headline Graffiti Night on July 7th, the West Coast Modified and Street Stock Smack Down event takes place on July 29th, there's an Outlaw Open Comp 100 lap Street Stock race on August 19th and more.  The Road To The Iron Giant Series hits Roseburg as part of the big July 29th Street Stock race.

The Hardtops joined the PRA last season and actually raced for points.  Greg Hickman won the championship by 14 points over Doug Coffman.  Harlam Cox, Kayran Greene and Tyler Nelson rounded out the Top 5.  Nicholas Hansen won the Street Stock title as Jonathon Doyle held off Kevin Ballard in a close battle for second.  Monique Scevers and Stephen McMahan completed the Top 5.  Tom Ford won the Modified championship ahead of Shannon Hensley, Andrew Koens, Herman Pulyer and Roy Harvey.  Dale Roth was the Mini Stock champ as Hickman fell short of a two championship season in second.  Dan Colton, Danny Elder and Tony Shoptaw rounded out the Top 5.  Neal Pecor won the Hornets championship by 42 points over Chris Cole as Richard Fleming, Skyler Thompson and Bob Vancil made up the remainder of the Top 5.

As this is being written, some of the competitors had their cars on display at the Douglas County Sportsman Outdoor and Recreation Show.  It's an opportunity for the track to spread the word about the coming season, while giving some lucky children photo ops sitting behind the wheel of the Hickman Hardtop.  On March 18th, the PRA will hold the Roy Harvey Bowling Fundraiser at Ten Down Bowling & Entertainment.  For further information, check out www.douglascountyspeedway.com.

Pro Stocks, Karts, New Tracks, Potential Tracks And Promoter Changes

People know about the Red Bluff Outlaws Indoor racing that takes place in the fall and winter months, but they may not be aware that there is another Kart track in the area.  There is a dirt track on that property, but next to it is a little pavement track that was just built.  The track is called Sunrise Speedway, and they will have a Wednesday night championship program that will start on April 5th.  The 11 race season goes all the way to September 20th.  On April 1st, they will be running their extra money Iron Man Race, which was rained out in January.  Should a rainout occur again, a makeup date is set for June 3rd.  Sunrise Speedway has a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Sunrise-Speedway-1066732010059886/.

In Roseville, All American Speedway is scrambling to fill the promoter vacancy following the departure of Rick Poppart.  The core three classes in recent seasons have been Street Stocks, Bombers and a Mini Stock class along with visits from a few touring groups.  K&N West Race Promoter Bill McAnally has been trying to secure the deal to promote the track this season and is confident that he will.  The Placer County Fair Board has made it known that they intend to continue to have races there.  Under the circumstances, a schedule has yet to be released.

Note:  It was just announced that Poppert is sticking around to make sure All American Speedway opens on time this year.  The Fair Board will continue to work on a deal to bring in a new promoter.  Their schedule is now up on their Facebook Page and should be on www.allamericanspeedway.com soon.

We mentioned earlier in this column that the Nevada Pro Stock Association is making a pair of appearances in Quincy.  This will not be their only venture into California as the group has booked a race at Cedarville Fairgrounds Speedway for June 24th.  This track has had a racing program of Stock Car classes through the years, and group promoter Gordon Russell Jr. wanted to hold a special memorial race for Gordon Russell Sr. that night.  Both Russell's competed there, and the younger Russell points out that this race isn't just about remembering his father, but others no longer with us who helped make the track special.  Could this be the start of a Cedarville racing revival?  The group is also keeping May 6th open to allow their drivers to support the Outlaw Pro Stock Association's Billy Geyer Memorial Race.

The OPSA has announced their Yreka dates, and they have a 13 race schedule between three tracks as mentioned in our article included in this post.  Many of the Oregon Outlaw Pro Stock drivers are based out of the Klamath Falls area, which used to be a hotbed of racing activity for many years.  An earthquake rendered the grandstands and buildings unusable.  Rather than rebuild them, the promoter closed the track.  The actual paved oval still sits on the property, and an investor might still have a shot at building a track there.  The problem is, nobody in the group of racers who are still based in the area has that kind of money, forcing them to tow to Medford and Yreka to race.  Over half of the currently active Pro Stock racers are from Klamath Falls along with some IMCA Modified and Mini Stock racers.

It gets worse.  Not far from Klamath Falls and off the freeway in a town called Worden sits another race track.  This is a dirt track currently owned by Southern Oregon Limited Sprint pioneer Carl Tresser.  Carl will occasionally ride his motorcyles on the property, but he reportedly has no desire to open the track or rent it to somebody who will.  Klamath Falls' Jeff Hudson was the Pro Stock champion the last time the place held races in the early 2000's, and OPSA President Scott Flowers was another competitor who ran there.  The reopening of this place would be a Godsend for the OPSA, who could quickly produce a ten car field, but does anybody within the group have the negotiating skills to make it happen?  The OPA has a new webpage at https://outlawprostock.wixsite.com/association.

The Pacific Sport Modified Series And The Sport Mod Mafia

The Sport Modifieds are getting more exposure than ever as both Oregon and Northern California has special things planned.  Steve Kerstulovich has done something extra special for North West Modified racers these past two years by creating a series with a point fund and contingency prizes.  Last season saw him add IMCA Sport Modifieds, and this year he is focusing just on that class with a series that takes place between Cottage Grove Speedway, Sunset Speedway, Southern Oregon Speedway and Siskiyou Motor Speedway.  The Pacific Sport Modified Series championship paid $600 to Jorddon Braaten last year, and the Top 5 left with at least $100.

Kerstulovich sees the class growing more in the immediate future and lobbied for its inclusion as part of Modified Speedweek from June 24th to July 1st.  Only Cottage Grove declined to invite the class as they visit the tracks in Yreka, Medford, Banks and Lebanon.  Right now, the sign up drive is in full swing as Steve tries to get driver support.  Considering this series paid more for its championship than either the State or track championships last year, it's not a bad idea for racers to support the cause.  It's only helping the class in the long run.  For further information, check out the Pacific Sport Mod Series Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1670565136533595/.

Steve was flirting with the addition of a Southern division in California that would have included Chico and Marysville, among other tracks.  However, he withdrew the idea just as California State champion Brian Cooper and Jerry Bartlett, both regulars at Marysville and Chico, set up their own Sport Mod Series.  Unlike the Pacific Sport Mod Series that counts every race, this one is more like a little tour with races in Chico, Marysville, Stockton, Petaluma and Merced.  Cooper and Bartlett have secured much sponsorship, and over 40 drivers have signed up already.  More information on this series can be found on the Sport Mod Mafia Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/Sport-Mod-Mafia-863777620388620/.

News From Orland, Chico, Placerville And Marysville

We mentioned in a recent article that Orland Raceway is coming back with a 12 race schedule that features Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Mini Trucks and the Micro Sprint classes.  Rich Hood and crew did a great job of getting this place going again last year, and that led to a couple more dates this season with two TBA October races listed as well.  The track is giving the West Coast Enduros a shot on May 6th as they had some success with the group a few years back.  There's also an August 12th appearance of the California Hardtop Association.  The May 19th Glenn County Fair race is usually a big night, and Hood has added the Figure 8 as part of that program.  Might this be the kind of race to kindles interst in the track?  There are racers in the San Francisco Bay Area reportedly interested in that race now that there is no place to run a Figure 8 in their area.  The track website is www.orlandraceway.org.

Three of our favorite Southern Jefferson race tracks are Chico, Placerville and Marysville Speedways.  You can find lots of information at the three tracks' websites as they are well represented in the media.  There are a few interesting bits of information, including the block buster news out of Placerville regarding the formation of the Winged 360 Sprint Car Challenge Series.  The track is looking hard at Wingless Spec Sprints as well.  The Sprint Car Challenge landed the major sponsorships of Abreu Vineyards and Elk Grove Ford.  They will race for $2500 to win and crown a $10,000 champion with the Top 10 in points getting a minimum of $1000.  The series has obtained a plethora of sponsors for various achievements, and Placerville and Stockton Dirt are the featured prominently on the schedule along with Petaluma, Antioch and Reno-Fernley.

Placerville will still feature the Placerville Posse extra money four race series for Sprint Cars, Limited Late Models and Pure Stocks, which are the core three classes.  Mason Moore (Sprint Cars), Eddie Gardner (Limited Late Models) and Nick Baldwin (Pure Stocks) were 2016 champions, and Baldwin won his by a slim four point margin ahead of Dan Jinkerson.  They are also adding Mini Trucks this year.  There are several special visitors coming to Placerville, which includes NCDCA Dwarf Cars, BCRA Midgets and Midget Lites and California Hardtops.  In fact, these groups will hit Marysville and Chico as well.  The official revamped Placerville Speedway website is www.placervillespeedway.com.

Chico Silver Dollar Speedway is steady as she goes.  Mini Gold Cup is just around the corner to kick off the season as the track that boasts the only weekly 410 Sprint Car program in California.  Street Stocks, Wingless Spec Sprints, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Winged Economy Sprints are other featured classes, along with special shows throughout the year, including the Gold Cup and Fall Classic races late in the season.  2016 champions included Sean Becker (410 Sprints), Angelique Bell (Wingless Spec Sprints), Todd Cooper (IMCA Sport Modifieds), Shawn Smith (Street Stocks), Brian Compton (Hobby Stocks), Wyatt Brown (Winged Economy Sprints) and Ryan McDaniel (Limited Late Models).  Cooper beat Jerry Bartlett by seven points to win his title, while Bell beat Terry Schank Jr. by just a point and Smith beat Phillip Shelby by a point as well.  Brown also had a one point victory over Mike Ficklin.  Just a year after dropping IMCA Modifieds, the track has dropped Limited Late Models from the lineup.

Dennis Gage and his crew will also be running Marysville again, and they boast a strong winged 360 Sprint Car class along with IMCA Sport Modifieds, Street Stocks, Wingless Spec Sprints, Winged Economy Sprints and Hobby Stocks.  2016 champions include Cody Lamar (Winged 360 Sprint Cars), Josh Viera (Wingless Spec Sprints), Brian Cooper (IMCA Sport Modifieds), James Castleberry (Street Stocks), Anthony Doubledee (Hobby Stocks) and Wyatt Brown (Winged Economy Sprints).  Lamar beat past champion Jeremy Burt, Viera beat Tim Sherman Jr. and Castleberry beat Phillip Shelby by less than ten points, while Brian beat Todd Cooper by 13 points as the track had some close championship battles.   The biggest Dwarf Car event on the West Coast, the WSDCA Dwarf Car Nationals, comes to Marysville in late September before the season closes with Gold Fever races for both Stock Cars and the open wheel classes in October.

Really, it's another action packed season at both tracks.  The Sherm & Loree Toller Memorial Race kicks off the Marysville season on February 25th, weather permitting, and the Civil War Sprint Car Series headlines the Mel Hall Memorial on May 27th.  Mini Gold Cup hits Chico on March 3rd and 4th with The Silver Cup on the 10th and 11th.  This is only a sampling of things, and you can find out more by going to the official sites at www.silverdollarspeedway.com/ or www.marysvilleraceway.com/.

2017 Schedule Features Lots of Excitement
At Southern Oregon Speedway

White City, Oregon...The schedule for the 22nd season of racing at Southern Oregon Speedway has been released, and it's a good one. The fans will be treated to a variety of different classes on the three-tenth mile clay oval, and the schedule is dotted with special events throughout the season. All of the divisions from last season will return this year, with some rules defined in a few of the classes that were added last year.

In an effort to make sure the racers get some practice in before the season, a Test and Tune has been booked for April 15th with a rain date Test And Tune also scheduled for April 22nd. April 29th kicks off the new season with Late Models and IMCA Sport Modifieds headlining along with Pro Stocks, Late Model Lites, Mini Stocks and SODCA Dwarf Cars. The popular IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Modifieds lead the charge on May 6th, along with Late Models, Late Model Lites, Mini Stocks and Hornets. The season continues all the way to September 16th.

As mentioned above, there are several special events sprinkled throughout the season. On May 27th, the track will have an Open Wheel Showcase, featuring Northwest Midgets and Kendall Oil Sprint Cars. Non Wing Sprint Car enthusiasts can also mark the Herz Precision Parts Cascade Sprint Car Challenge on their calendars on August 26th, which will pay $3,000 to win. On June 3rd, the Roger Haudenshild Tribute will feature an increased purse for IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds and Pro Stocks. June 24th will be the annual Wild West Speedweek IMCA Modified and IMCA Sport Modified race.

The SODCA Dwarf Cars have again made the speedway the host track for the WSDCA Dwarf Car Nationals on August 4th-5th. There will also be a special Street Stock event on May 20th, billed as The Road To The Iron Giant Series.  On August 12th,  with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Late Models, Pro Stocks, Hornets and SODCA Dwarf Cars on the schedule, the track pays tribute to Medford racing history with a special "Hall Of Fame" night. Other scheduling announcements will be forthcoming.

Most of the divisions will have a minimum of ten races as a way to help ensure driver support and more cars on race night. The regular classes will also run for a guaranteed purse, regardless of car count. Given the current times, racers are balancing family time with racing time, and there's also the racer's budget to consider. It's with budget and increased driver support in mind that the track has adjusted the rules for the Pennzoil Sprint Car class. A new generation of racers is coming up through the Outlaw Kart ranks, and it's anticipated that these rules adjustments will help make it easier for them to continue supporting open wheel racing.

David Hibbard is coming back to his home track.  A past Limited Sprint Car champion who only missed the championship at Cottage Grove last season when he turned the wheel over to his son Bailey Hibbard for a race, David has enthusiastically worked behind the scenes with promoter Mike McCann to make a ten race season. Hibbard and McCann believe that this will lead to more cars, and David is looking forward to he and his son both competing at his home track. Other names to watch for include Jeffrey Hudson, Merissa Henson and rising young Outlaw Kart star Tanner Holmes.

After a year of the Open Stock experiment, the track has switched it to a Late Model division this year. Several cars are being built. The Dees family (champion father Bob and sons John and Garrett), will be back along with Mike Linder. Other names to watch for include Dustin Knight, Don Garrett Jr., Rick Hazen and Nathan Augustine. Because there are more Late Model chassis being run with 4 cylinder motors, the Super 4's have been rebranded as Late Model Lites. Champion Lee Doty will be back along with other stars, such as past champion John Barger, Charlie Eaton, Dan Prewitt, Eric Aos and Terry and Krista Hadley.

IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sport Modifieds are back. Management remains committed to the IMCA sanctioning and is hoping that this leads to a car count increase. IMCA Modified stars such as two time champion Albert Gill, James Welshonse, Duane Orsburn, Bo Shields, Jay Poppa, Jesse Bailey, Andy Freeman and Nick Trenchard are just a few who are anticipated this year.  Freeman will be debuting a new car.  Meanwhile, Mike Medel has a new car with hopes of defending his IMCA Sport Modified track championship, but he will face stiff competition from two time champion Jorddon Braaten, David Marble, Rich McCoy, Willie McFall, A.J. Parker, Tony Bartell and more.

The track has welcomed the Pro Stocks back under its own banner, meaning the drivers will race for a Southern Oregon Speedway championship for the first time since 2011. There are no major rule changes, and drivers anticipated during the 9 race season include two time champion Ken Irving, Miles Deubert, Brian Johnsen, Mike Johnson, Derrel Nelson Jr. and more. The Pro Stocks were one of the four divisions on the track's roster when it opened back in 1996, and it is still seen as an important part of what we do.

Mini Stocks are coming off of their best season in recent years, and that trend is expected to continue this year. Though champion Bob Burkett is moving up to Late Model Lites, he will still make several appearances in Mini Stocks. 2014 champion Gary Anderson and division super star David Steele are anticipated along with rising stars like Andrew Hall, Kristopher Mix, Dillen Lausen, Michael Johnson and many others.

The Hornets are back for their fourth season, and most of last year's stars are back again for the upcoming eight racer season. Champion Tim Hedges is planning to field three cars with his son and another driver wheeling the other cars. He recently purchased the Jesse Merriman car. Gabe Nelson will reportedly take the wheel of his dad's car, while John Hoult and hard charger Joby Shields will also be back. Other cars are being built, and this should be the biggest season yet for the entry level class.

The SODCA Dwarf Cars race at other venues, but they are proud to call Southern Oregon Speedway their home track. They will run most of their races here. In a bid to repeat as champion, Brock Peters has a new car from the shops of M&M Racing. Following back to back runnerup seasons, Camden Robustelli has his sites set on a championship and will make racing his Dwarf Car a bigger priority than racing his Sprint Car.  Rising young star Cody Peters, two time champion Josh King, Chad Cardoza, Randy Slater, Rob Sanders and other hard chargers will keep things very competitive.

Also back for more in 2017 will be the OTRO Hardtops.  The popular vintage division features some beautiful Coupe and Sedan bodied race cars and has been featured on the paved race tracks in the Northwest for several years.  OTRO President Vic Bridges negotiated some dates last season, and the group enjoyed racing at Southern Oregon Speedway so much that they're back for eight more races this year.  Some of the competitors in the group include Trevor Thomason, Bill Trotter, Wylie Powell, Jimmy Del Castille and Dean Cast.

Outlaw Kart enthusiasts may be wondering where the schedule is for the one-eighth mile oval.  They can rest assured that a schedule will be forthcoming and will be bigger than the 2016 offering.  Things are being finalized before the announcement can be made, and it will be good.  The awards banquet announcement will also make February a big month for the Outlaw Karts.  The 500 Open Karts, 250 Karts, Box Stocks and  Beginners Box Stocks will all be a part of the coming season. Stay tuned for all of that information.
It all gets started with the April 29th season opener.  With the exceptions of Jackson County Fair week on July 15th and the Country Music Festival on July 29th, racing will continue all the way through to championship night for IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Late Models, Mini Stocks and SODCA Dwarf Cars on September 16.  Stay tuned for further announcements and look for other information at www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

2017 Schedule Released For Siskiyou Motor Speedway

Yreka, CA...The first draft of the 2017 schedule for Siskiyou Motor Speedway has been released, and it's filled with all of the big events you've come to expect, a few surprises and some new things as well.  The Siskiyou County Motorsports Association has a great season planned for the big track with news on the Outlaw Kart track still to come.

One bit of information that is sure to make racers and fans happy is the fact that the track will retain IMCA sanctioning for both the Modified and growing Sport Modified divisions.  The SCMA also encourages those racers to join the SCMA for a vote on matters concerning the future of the track and an opportunity to compete for SCMA championship points in addition to IMCA points.

Contrary to rumors, the track will continue to feature Modifieds as an important part of their schedule.  Four important nights of racing for the class are the John Arnberg Memorial Race (May 26th and 27th), Wild West Modified Speedweek on June 23rd, the Firecracker Challenge on July 4th and the big season ending Rod Restad Memorial Race on September 23rd.  The Sport Modifieds are included on all four nights with the big Bo Hittson Memorial Race on May 26th and 27th.   The Mini Stocks run the Mike Caveye Memorial Race on May 26th and 27th.

The challenge has been issued to the IMCA Modified drivers to come back and race.  Lenny Toolanen and Stan Gunderson still made a few starts last season, but hopefully they will be seen more often this year along with other local hard chargers like Pablo Duran.  Albert Gill managed to grab the championship from Duane Orsburn in last season's finale, and it's likely that we'll see them again this season along with other big names from across the state line.  The Modifieds remain one of the more popular classes on the West Coast, and track management is hoping to see an increase in support this year.

Management did see an increase in support from the O'Reilly Auto Parts IMCA Sport Modified drivers last season.   The highly competitive championship battle was won by Jimmy Lipke as over a dozen competitors won a Main Event.  It was so exciting that you never knew who would win on any given week.  Lipke is anticipated this year as well as two of his closest rivals, SCMA champion Garrett Hamilton and Doug Franklin.  However, there is plenty of new blood in this class.  The Boswell brothers are both up from the Mini Stock ranks.  Ryder made his division debut last year, while 2015 IMCA champion Colter Boswell is already a force to be reckoned with.

Nobody was winning more than Colton Cheffey last year, and people are already picking this rising young star as the driver to beat in the championship battle.  D.J. Bottoms is another star on the rise and the talented field includes hard chargers like Doug Morton, Dave Henshaw, Randy Wright, Jack Waldon III and Trevor Tiffee.  There's no reason to think that this season will any less exciting than it was last year.  The IMCA rules package is certainly doing its part to make the competition level as high as it is.

The McDonald's Mini Stocks are an important part of the program and are also very competitive.  Last year saw another championship battle that went right to the end in favor of long time competitor and division booster Marilyn Yawnick.  With rising young star Ethan Killingsworth and past champion Terry Kendrick nipping at her heels, that championship didn't come easy for Yawnick.  With these two back again this year, can Marilyn repeat?  2014 champion Mike Whitaker is sure to rebound from a rough season.  Hopefully, he will be joined at some point by his son Anthony, who is currently serving in the military.  David Steele is sure to make things interesting anytime he's in action, and Dennis Jorgensen, Mike Frost, Mike Colson and Amber Waldon are other drivers to watch for.

There are some other key attractions that will highlight the season, not the least of which is the Sprint Car Speedweek race that is set for Monday, July 10th, supported by IMCA Sport Modifieds.  The Outlaw Pro Stocks will headline the 3rd Annual Billy Geyer Memorial Race on May 6th, and they are in negotiations for more dates, which have yet to be announced.  Word was they will be making visits at least five times with defending champion Steve Borror, Scott Flowers, James Flowers, Matt Harlow and Roy Bain among the drivers to watch for.  The SODCA Dwarf Cars are set for visits on April 22nd, July 4th and July 15th.  With Kalvin Morton moving up after sweeping all three visits last season, defending SODCA champion Brock Peters, Cody Peters, Chad Cardoza and Camden Robustelli will be leading the charge for victory this year.

Through the years, Siskiyou Speedway has had other divisions as part of the show, and management is looking to add to the roster in 2017.  A call was recently put out for any class that can bring at least four cars, and the entry level Hornets division was specifically mentioned as a class that will be added.  In fact, an IMCA Sport Compact sanctioning was even hinted at, causing rumblings of interest just across the state line.  The bone stock 4 cylinder Hornets are featured at several Oregon tracks and are an affordable class that is growing.  Management is also looking at the more advanced 4 cylinder Late Model Lites division, and dates for both classes are to be announced.

At this point, the Outlaw Kart schedule for the one-eighth mile dirt oval hasn't been announced, but it is coming soon.  Some Karts are likely to be on display along with the bigger cars as part of the March 11th Sportsman Expo Car Show & Shine.  The car show continues on March 12th with a racing exhibition planned, whether permitting.  After a Test And Tune on April 1st, IMCA Modifieds, O'Reilly Auto Parts IMCA Sport Modifieds and McDonald's Mini Stocks kick off the season on April 8th.  It all adds up to an exciting season of racing once again at Siskiyou Motor Speedway.  For further information, check out www.siskiyoumotorspeedway.com.

Siskiyou Motor Speedway 2016 Season Recap

Yreka, CA...The 2016 season at Siskiyou Motor Speedway featured the rise of the O'Reilly Auto Parts IMCA Sport Modifieds with their strongest season yet.  The McDonald's Mini Stocks maintained a strong presence at the track.  There were also several appearances of the IMCA Modifieds, including the big Wild West Speedweek Series, John Arnberg and Rod Restad races.  Outlaw Pro Stocks, SODCA Dwarf Cars and a Sprint Car Speedweek Tour race were also a part of the schedule.  Saturday racing also included several afternoon events on the new one-eighth mile Outlaw Kart track.

The SCMA continued to run the program and held their own championship point races in addition to the IMCA sanctioned Modified classes.  The records will show that Garrett Hamilton (SCMA Sport Modifieds), Marilyn Yawnick (Mini Stocks) and Duane Orsburn (SCMA Modifieds) won those championships.  The IMCA Sport Modified title went to Jimmy Lipke, while Albert Gill won the IMCA Modified championship.  The Yreka events were a factor in Steve Borror (Outlaw Pro Stocks) and Brock Peters (SODCA Dwarf Cars) capturing their respective championships.  Outlaw Kart champions included Richard Weststeyn (500 Karts), Brionna Fuller (Box Stocks), Taylor Fuller (Beginner Box Stocks), Ed Grubb (Speedway Karts) and Braden Weiser (250 Karts).

There was a change at the top in Sport Modifieds, and the youth movement also continued.  The previous season saw Colter Boswell win the IMCA championship and Doug Franklin win the SCMA title.  Boswell didn't make his season debut until later, and Franklin missed races to take himself out of the hunt.  Garrett Hamilton was very much interested in pursuing the championship, and Jimmy Lipke stepped up his program as well.  Much like Boswell a year earlier, Lipke never joined the SCMA, opting instead to focus squarely on the IMCA championship that his membership put him in contention for.   It was still close at the end of the season.

Hamilton actually got off to a slightly better start, but Lipke stayed a bit more consistent and grabbed the lead.  A crash late in the season actually left Lipke struggling a bit, but he still held on for the IMCA championship by 19 points.  Lipke had one win, topped the field with five seconds and had two thirds, along with two dash wins.  Hamilton had one won, two seconds, two thirds and two dash wins.  Though second to Lipke in the IMCA championship, Hamilton was honored at the SCMA championship banquet.  Reigning SCMA champion Doug Franklin was second in that race by 11 points ahead of Jack Waldon III.  Franklin was also third in IMCA points with a feature win, two seconds, one third and two dash wins.

There was not a more competitive IMCA Sport Modified show in the northwest than the one held at Yreka 18 times in 2016.  Considering the fact that there are some talented young competitors such as Colton Cheffey, D.J. Bottoms, Colter Boswell and Ryder Boswell on the roster, the future is looking bright for Yreka Sport Modifieds.  Cheffey finished fourth in SCMA points and fifth in IMCA points, behind Walden.  However, the teen sensation led the division with four feature wins and four dash wins, along with four second place feature finishes and one third.  Some are calling him the driver to beat going into the new season.

Even more amazing was the fact that Cheffey was one of two repeat winners on a list of 14 different winners.  It wasn't until Oregon's IMCA State champion Jorddon Braaten got his second win 11 weeks into the season that there was a repeat winner.  Medford champion Mike Medel won the season opener, and Kurt Lorenzini, Keith Foux, California IMCA State champion Brian Cooper,  Fred Ryland, Randy Wright, Colter Boswell, Rich McCoy and Kalvin Morton were also on the Main Event winner's list with one each.  Colter Boswell had two second place feature finishes, and two season high seconds were earned by Jessie Morton.  Season high thirds were earned by Ryder Boswell (twice) and Chad Wormington, Gary Foster, Jimmy Ford and Glen Severson, once each.

The Trophy Dash winner's list included several names in addition to Lipke, Hamilton, Cheffey and Morton.  Medel, Wormington, Foux, Braaten, Lorenzini, D.J. Bottoms and McCoy each had one.

The McDonald's Mini Stocks also helped keep the show together with a steady average in car count.  Coming off of his 2015 championship, David Steele was still the driver to beat.  However, his points took a hit when he parked with motor problems one night rather than doing more damage trying to get more points.  This lifted past champion Terry Kendrick, rising young star Ethan Killingsworth and Marilyn Yawnick into a competitive three car battle.  Though Yawnick has been an important part of the class for several seasons, she had the best season of her career.  Kendrick kept it close until a heat race crash with Steele just past the mid point of the season caused him to roll his truck and borrow a ride for the feature.  However, he got no Main Event points that night.  That proved to be the difference.

Yawnick left no doubt that she was the champion by picking up her fourth feature win late in the season.  She also had three thirds and two Trophy Dash wins.  With his two wins coming in the last three races, 15 year old Killingsworth pulled to within 13 points of Yawnick at the end.  Ethan also had three seconds and three thirds as well as two dash wins.  Kendrick earned one feature win.  He also led the class in seconds (five) and thirds (four).   Past champion Mike Whitaker had some  horrendous luck.  However, he did manage to win one feature along with a second and two thirds, helping him take fourth from Steele in the final standings.  Steele still racked up six wins, four seconds and four dash wins to maintain fifth in points.

Dennis Jorgensen won one feature along with two seconds, two thirds and a dash win, but he didn't join SCMA and chose not to run for points.  Mike Colson and Aaron Jorgensen each had a dash win.

The IMCA Modifieds struggled mightily during the season with the exception of the Wild West Series race and the track's signature Arnberg and Restad Memorial events.  Originally, there were to be just the three big races and a couple of others, but the schedule was revised twice to add more races.  Most of the locals who had supported in recent seasons parked, and the only driver who seemed interested in racing for points was Duane Orsburn, who joined the SCMA.  After reigning champion Nick Trenchard opened the season with a $1000 win, there were two three car fields and a night when only Orsburn showed up.  The second three car field saw Orsburn and Stan Gunderson both get disqualified, prompting Orsburn to park. This led to nights when nobody showed.

Because the Wild West and Arnberg races were still to come, car count grew with some big name drivers for both events.  There were doubts about whether there even was a show at this point, but six car fields appeared twice, won by Susanville champion Chris Olexiewicz and Albert Gill, who suddenly found himself challenging Orsburn for the championship heading into the Restad Memorial Race.  When Orsburn fell out of that race, Gill won the IMCA championship.  Orsburn is the SCMA champion.

Nobody repeated on the winner's list.  After Trenchard's $1000 win, regular events were won by Jeremy Ohlde, Roger Lorenzini Jr., Olexiewicz and Gill.  Ryan McDaniel won the Arnberg race ahead of Kyle Casson and Medford champion Mark Wauge, Wild West Speedweek champion Kellen Chadwick won that race ahead of Lance Mari and Collen Winebarger and Bobby Hogge IV made his first appearance ever at the track and won the Restad Race ahead of Alex Stanford and McDaniel.  The list of second place finishers also included Dan Thomas, Orsburn, Ray Kniffen Jr., and James Welshonse. Gill, Gunderson, past champion Lenny Toolanen and Orsburn each had one third.  Welshonse had two Trophy Dash wins and Trenchard, Orsburn, Lorenzini, Kniffen and Wauge each had one.

The track also welcomed the Outlaw Pro Stocks for five races, including the two race weekend that was the group's crown jewel, the Bily Geyer Memorial Race.  A late season cancellation by the group knocked their visits down from six.  The clear star of the Pro Stocks was series champion Steve Borror.  Borror won four of five races, including the Geyer race.  He was third in the Friday night preliminary feature as part of the Geyer event.  Borror also won three Trophy Dashes.  Second ranked Scott Flowers never missed a Top 3 finish with one second and four thirds.  Brian Johnsen won the Geyer preliminary feature and a Trophy Dash.  Other notable finishes included James Flowers, Arlen Garrison, reigning series champion Jeffrey Hudson and Rocky Nash each with a second and Miles Deubert with a third.  John David Duffie had a dash win.

Kalvin Morton likely wished the SODCA Dwarf Cars ran more races in Yreka.  Morton swept all three events and had two A Dash wins.  Unfortunately, a flip during the season in Medford saw him struggle enough to fall to third behind champion Brock Peters and Camden Robustelli.  Robustelli had one second place finish, while Chad Cardoza impressed with two seconds, a third and an A Dash win.  Rob Gergel, Mason Lewman and rising young star Cody Peters each had a third place finish as C. Peters also ranked fourth in points.

There was also a Sprint Car Speedweek race, and Mitchell Facinto won that race ahead of series champion Trey Starks and Jonathon Allard.  Faccinto also won the Trophy Dash that night.

Through the years, Siskiyou Motor Speedway has attempted to start an Outlaw Kart program.  It's believed that having a training ground such as their one-eight mile dirt oval will groom the future stars of the bigger track.  They usually raced Saturday afternoon before the big track had their races.  As the track was still being improved, a few races were canceled, and the improved track actually debuted in September.  Unfortunately, race results were not available, but point totals and point totals earned per race were.

The 500 Kart championship went to Richard Weststeyn.  Richard was the top point earner in three of the six races and was second twice.  500 Kart star Mike Wheeler was the top driver in his lone appearance, and Pro Stock champion Jeffrey Hudson was the top point getter in his one visit.  Kyle Morris managed to be the championship runnerup on the strength of two nights when he earned the second highest point total and two nights when he had the third highest.  Dillen Lausen made two starts and was the highest point earner of the finale.  Merissa Henson and Steve Rambo each had a night when they were the second highest point earners, while Medford champion Johnny Burke and Kenny Steadman each had a night when they earned the third highest point totals.

The Speedway Karts, led by the Fuller family, is a division trying to establish a presence in Yreka.  In three of the four visits, Ed Grubb had the highest point totals, and not surprisingly, he won the champion ship over Larry Fuller.  Larry had one night each as the top point earner, second highest and third highest.  Lori Fuller, Matt Davis and Matt Kimes each has one second place point night as their best efforts, and Sean Fuller and Debbie Maderros each had the third highest totals once.  According to kart numbers for the last two events, the Speedway Kart season ended the strongest.

The Fuller family presence was felt in both Box Stock classes.  Brionna Fuller was very impressive in Box Stocks as she had the highest totals four times, the second highest once and the third highest once.  Despite that, she won the championship by just 26 points over Natalie Richard.   The consistent Richard had the highest totals once and the second highest point earnings five times.  Cadyn Smith had the highest totals once.  Dallin Dagata ranked third in points with his two best performances being nights in which he earned the third highest totals.  Ryan Hirschbock moved up from the lower class and had the third highest totals in the finale.

Brionna's brother Taylor Fuller was very consistent in winning the Beginners Box Stock championship.  Taylor was the top point earner once, earned the second highest points four times and was third highest once.  Jacob James only beat Drew Berry by five points in the battle for second.  James was the highest point earner twice and had the third highest totals twice.  Berry was the highest point earner, the second highest point getter and the third highest point earner each once.  Ryan Hirschbock and Malachi Johnson topped the point list each once.  Adrian Richard had the second highest point totals once for his best showing, while Kyle Nixon had the third highest totals once.

The 250 Karts had enough support for three races.  Braden Weiser was the champion over Bodee Weiser.  Braden Weiser and Enrique Jaime each had one night with the highest totals.  The finial event saw the two Weiser boys and Trace Adams tie for the highest totals.  Cole Skyler had the third most points in the first race.

Orland Raceway Prepares For 2017 Season

Orland, CA...Orland Raceway is returning for a new season of racing under the promotion of Rich Hood.  A long time Pure Stock competitor at the track, Hood stepped forward in 2016 to save the track after the previous management walked away days after announcing a schedule.  Hood went local with his schedule, meaning the staple classes, Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks, Mini Trucks and Micros were all scheduled for their 10 race season in an effort to get the ball rolling once again.  Because they had such a late start, they stuck with the basics in an effort to get racing back on the one-fifth mile dirt oval.

For the 2017 season, Orland has bumped the schedule up to 12 dates and two as of yet announced special events in October.  There are two playdays set for April 15th and April 22nd, and the season kicks off with the core five classes on April 29th.  They run pretty much every other week, but they do follow up the opener with a May 6th West Coast Enduro event.  One of the marque events for the track happens on May 19th as part of the Glenn County Fair.  Joining the core five classes will be a special Figure 8 race.

The track will likely make a few races during the 12 race championship season special events, and the August 12th race is special in its own right as the California Hardtops make their return after a three year absence.  Management has indicated in the past that they are receptive to adding dates for visiting groups if there is enough support, leaving open the possibility of an appearance by a division such as Street Stocks, Sport Modifieds or even Wingless Spec Sprints.  As it is, local racers will be happy to know they have a nice 12 race season booked.

Leading the charge will be the Pure Stocks.  The strongest support at the track continues to come from the popular division as they frequently have fielded car counts above ten during the past few seasons.  One of the names found frequently at or near the top of the point list in recent years is Steve Martin.  Martin won last season's championship by just 26 points ahead of Jeremy Langenderfer.  Despite missing the first three races, the steady Shannon Collins beat Cody Bundy by just seven points in a close battle for third.

Not surprisingly, Collins, Martin and Langenderfer topped the feature winner's list in 2016.  Collins won three times to a pair of victories each for Langenderfer and Martin.  Chico champion Brian Compton came to town and won the finale, and past Orland star Brad Ray and Jason Armstrong also had wins.  Armstrong is anticipated for the Hardtop show and may make a visit or two for some Pure Stock racing.  Other stars of Orland Raceway Pure Stock racing to watch for in 2017 include Earl Adams, Amanda Koop, Jared Flower, Mel Byers and Chris Barnett.

California's last remaining Mini Tuck division is in Orland.  The class has been featured here since the 1990's. One of the stars in recent years has been the always exciting to watch Dan Webster.  Unfortunately, bad luck, like the time he demolished his truck in a rollover, has kept him from taking the throne as champion.  However, Webster won the championship by 59 points ahead of William Fogle last season despite missing the opener.  The next three names on the list are Orland mainstays Keith Ross, Ross Vige and Olin Crain.

Ross was actually the reigning champion, and Vige was also a champion in recent seasons.  Crain  remains a staunch supporter with multiple vehicles in Mini Trucks and Mini Stocks.  Crain actually won two of the first three races before taking himself out of the championship battle.  Ross led the winner's list 4-3 over Webster, while Vige won the season finale.  Nate Skaggs, Brent Allinger and Jeremy Callen are other drivers to watch for this season.

Unlike the other two champions, Orland Raceway mainstay John Kirkpatrick won his Mini Stock championship without winning a Main Event.  His margin of victory over past champion Robert Hunt was just 32 points.  Past champion Tom Davis ran a hit and miss schedule, but when he raced, he dominated.  Davis held off Donovan Chilton by 16 points in the battle for third, while newcomer Jeff Bennett was fifth despite missing the second half of the season when Barbara Crain took over the driving duties.

Davis opened the season with two wins, closed it with three in row and had a total of six victories in his seven starts.  Chilton grabbed a pair of wins, while Hunter Merritt and Hunt each grabbed a victory.  Other drivers to watch for this season include, Steve Spears, Eric Hammond and Seth Libbe.  As with the other classes, word is that there will be some new drivers on the roster this season.
Not to be forgotten in the mix are the 600cc and 250cc engined Micro Sprint classes, which were first introduced to the regular roster by promoter Mike McCann in 2013.  Building car count has been a work in progress, though the 250's ended the 2016 season with their second seven car field and the 600's had a 10 car field once during the year.  Management remains committed to building up these classes, but at times the two might run together if car count is light.

When you're talking 600 Micros at Orland, you have to mention the two biggest stars, Jeromie Chrismon and Skyler Richter.  Both drivers, along with third ranked Tony Alosi, were feature winners last year, and Chrismon's championship margin over Richter was big due to Richter missing races.  Fourth ranked Kyra Michelet was also a feature winner last year, and other drivers to watch for in 600's this season include Rick Gutzke, Dean Slinkard and Rick Alonso.

The 250 racers tried something different one night as they had a wingless race, won by Robert Baker.  One of the big names on the roster is Jackie Whitson Jr., who won multiple Main Events but missed several races to finish fifth in the standings.  Andrew Love was also a feature winner during the 2016 season and won his championship comfortably ahead of Dave McKinnon.  McKinnon just barely held off Ronnie Heyer by 3 points for second, while Jess Garland was 12 points back in fourth.

Through the years, Orland Raceway has sort of flown in under the radar and has almost been like the best kept secret in Northern California racing.  However, there have been some big races and some top notch racers who have all helped make this such a special place to race.  Thanks to Rich Hood and his crew, there is a nice schedule that will kick off on April 29th with the core five classes and wrap up a 12 race championship season for those classes on September 30th.  Let's not forget the May 6th Enduro and the two potential special events in October.  It all adds up to lots of excitement for Orland racing fans.  For further information, go to http://www.orlandraceway.org/.
