R Charles Snyder Salute $5000 To Win IMCA Modified Race Flier September 1-2 HERE
2nd Annual R Charles Snyder Salute Brings Best Competition To Southern Oregon Speedway Saturday Night
White
City, Oregon...The biggest race of the season is on the schedule at
Southern Oregon Speedway this Saturday and Sunday nights. It is the
Second Annual R Charles Snyder Salute, paying tribute to the long time
radio DJ and racing announcer. Competing divisions include the IMCA
Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars and a Sunday
appearance by the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks.
For
over 40 years, Snyder was a popular radio DJ in the Medford area.
Through the years, he also announced at the old Medford Speedway,
Siskiyou Motor Speedway and Southern Oregon Speedway. He lent his voice
to different causes to help people within the community and also
promoted some big concerts through the years. When he passed away in
2015, many people mourned his loss.
Under
the management of KJE Enterprises, Southern Oregon Speedway wanted to
have a special race to honor Snyder and reached out to his son Travis to
schedule the first event last year. Travis, who like his father has
been a leader in helping people in the community, was moved by the
gesture. He also stepped in to help bring in some sponsors for the big
Modified show. During the big two day weekend, the scoring tower was
dedicated as the R Charles Snyder Memorial Race Tower.
Travis
Snyder, joined by Travis Hoppes and Claudia Linker, has worked to bring
in sponsorship to increase the IMCA Modified and IMCA Sport Modified
purse money again this year. The drivers will also compete for lap
money. In both Main Events, if you lead a lap, you get $10 per lap.
Also, there will be an R Charles Snyder Salute t-shirt available this
weekend. This will be an event that Charles would surely be proud of.
Once
again, the IMCA Modifieds will be racing for $5,000 to win on Sunday.
The IMCA Sport Modified payoff has been increased to $2,000 to win this
year. Already, there are over 40 confirmed Sport Modified drivers coming
to compete, and the list of entries planning to race in the IMCA
Modified portion of the show is approaching 40.
Last
season, Troy Foulger picked up the $5,000 paycheck in what was his
biggest win. He beat Mark Wauge for the win. Seven-time Southern Oregon
Speedway champion Wauge is hoping this will be his year. He had his
hands full holding off Bobby Hogge IV to get that second place finish.
Hogge has won some of the biggest races up and down the West Coast
throughout his decorated career and would have to be considered the
driver to beat this weekend.
Bakersfield
Speedway star Robby Sawyer will be making his first appearance at
Southern Oregon Speedway. Sawyer is currently second in the standings at
his home track. Meanwhile, Merced Speedway point leader Darrell Hughes
II has his eyes on the big payday following his win in the Ed Parker
Tribute race at his home track. Brothers Chase and Chris Neiman, two of
the frontrunners at American Valley Speedway in Quincy, California, are
coming along with past Susanville champion Larry McCracken.
Past
Quincy champion Jeff Olschowka will be making another appearance as
will Willamette Speedway champion Collen Winebarger, who won the
Speedweek race at Southern Oregon Speedway earlier this season.
Decorated Nevada and California champion Robert Miller will be coming in
from Nevada once again, and local racer Jeremy Richey will be making a
rare appearance. That's just a sampling of the big-name drivers that
will be coming from all over the West Coast for a shot at the big money.
We just got late word that 2016 Speedweek champion Kellen Chadwick is
coming.
Of
course, when they get through the gates, they'll have to deal with
local stars Albert Gill, Zach Fettinger and Nick Trenchard. Gill is a
two-time track champion and current point leader, while Fettinger has
won three Main Events this season and is second in points. Nick
Trenchard collected his second win of the season last time out. He has a
knack for winning the big races, including the Beads Shipwreck
Nationals in Elma, the John Arnberg Memorial in Yreka and the Roger
Haudenshild Tribute Race at Southern Oregon Speedway. Dave Duste Jr,
Duane Orsburn and James Welschonse are others anticipated from the area.
About
the biggest name in IMCA Sport Modifieds that you'll find in Oregon is
two-time Southern Oregon Speedway champion Jorddon Braaten. Braaten won
the big race last season and has spent much of his time traveling up
north as the point leader at Willamette and Cottage Grove this year.
Braaten has his eyes on the $2,000 payday and enters as the early
favorite to win. Two-time champion Mike Medel hopes to have something to
say about this.
From
California, Yreka point leader Trevor Tiffee plans to run this race
along with 2016 Yreka champion Jimmy Lipke. Merced Speedway stars Tanner
and Chase Thomas are planning to make the trip. Reigning Chico and
Marysville champion Phillip Shelby is coming to race along with
Marysville racers Jimmy Ford and Alan Furuta. This is just a sampling of
the over 40 drivers planning to come race the Sport Modified show.
Point
leader David Marble will be hoping to make his presence known on the
big stage. Marble is hoping to notch his first division championship and
has been a consistent Top 5 finisher. He's also one of seven different
Main Event winners this year along with second-ranked Branden Wilson.
Other local leadfoots such as Willie McFall, Tony Duste, Tony Bartell,
Billy Richey and Jesse Merriman are anticipated.
if
the two Modified divisions aren't enough, the Southern Oregon Dwarf Car
Association is anticipated with another big turnout. Young Cody Peters
was the point leader at the last update, and he and his two-time
championship winning father Brock Peters should be leading the pack this
week along with championship contenders Kalvin Morton and Chad Cardoza,
two-time champion Josh King, ageless veteran Fred Hay and Ryan Smith.
The
Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks will be a part of Sunday's card
for what is their second and final appearance of the season. Dr. Scott
Lenz has been winning everywhere they go and holds a 50 point lead over
Scott Flowers in their championship race. Lenz won the Main Event the
last time the group was at Southern Oregon Speedway. Other drivers to
watch for include 2016 champion Steve Borror, the consistent Matt
Harlow, Johnny Cobb, Roy Bain, Ginny Flowers, Bryan Hammond and Jeff
Haudenshild. We've also received late word that First Class Auto Glass
will be putting an additional $500 into the Main Event purse.
On
both nights, the gates will open at 5 p.m. with the first race
scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Tickets on Saturday will be $15 for General
Admission. Seniors, Veterans and Juniors (7 to 12) will be $10 and
children 6 and under are free. On Sunday night, General Admission is $20
with Seniors, Veterans and Juniors (7 to 12) $15. Children 6 and under

Ensign Wins $3,500 Prize In Cascade Wingless Sprint Car Challenge Race At Southern Oregon Speedway

City, Oregon...August 25...Taking the lead from Shawn Arriaga in the
early laps of the race, Geoff Ensign went on to win the 25 lap Cascade
Wingless Sprint Car challenge race Saturday night at Southern Oregon
Speedway. The event offered a $3,500 first prize thanks to sponsorship
from Herz Precision Parts. Ensign won this race last year and won it
again this year aboard the Ted Finkenbinder owned car. Local Kendall Oil
Winged Sprint Car competitor Jeffrey Hudson removed his wing and
impressed with a $1,500 second place finish.The Wingless Sprint Car competitors had an opportunity to qualify on the Jim Rodgers prepared 3/10 mile clay oval, and Ensign clocked in with the quickest lap of 12.950, beating the 13.190 of Arriaga. Ensign picked up the $100 bonus money for setting the fast time, and both drivers were able to avoid running the 10 lap heat races and went straight to the eight lap Scramble. Northwest Focus Midget star Jonathan Jorgensen won the first heat race ahead of Tim Alberding. Lindsay Barney impressed with her win in the second heat race ahead of Hudson. Arriaga drew a front row start for the eight lap Scramble and scored an impressive victory ahead of Barney.
Arriaga charged into the lead at the start of the Main Event with Ensign immediately settling into second. The lead duo ran close at the front before an inside pass in Turn 4 of the sixth lap gained Ensign the lead. Barney was running third ahead of Jorgensen and Hudson in a close battle for that position. Ensign had a straightaway advantage by lap 18 with Arriaga holding second by a comfortable margin as well. Jorgenson made a low pass in Turn 2 of the 20th lap to take third from Barney, but Hudson made an outside pass on the front stretch a lap later to get around Jorgenson as the drivers negotiated traffic. Working lap 23, Arriaga came out of Turn 4 too hard and hit the front wall and rolled. Fortunately, he was not injured. During the red flag, the Hudson team managed to deal with an oil leak that could have ended their race. Ensign led Hudson and Barney on the restart, and they ran in that order to the checkered flag as Barney pocketed $1,000 for her third place finish. Jorgensen settled for fourth, followed by Tim Alberding, Lance Hallmark, Mark Herz, Guy Weedman, Arriaga and Kevin Pendergrass.

Deubert Returns To Late Model Winner's Circle
At Southern Oregon Speedway
Miles Deubert #38 won his second Late Model Main Event.
White City, Oregon...August 25...Taking the lead from John Dees, rookie Miles Deubert went on to win the 20 lap Late Model Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. This was the second win of the season for Deubert, who won the season opener. Dees settled for his fourth second place finish of the season.
Point leader Nathan Augustine won both the four lap Trophy Dash and the six lap heat race, both ahead of Bob Dees. With a pole position start, Augustine charged into the lead ahead of John Dees. However, Dees raced by Augustine for the lead on lap three with Deubert quickly settling into second. Augustine discovered he had a flat tire and headed for the pits on lap eight as the battle heated up at the front of the pack. An inside move on the front stretch of the ninth lap gained Deubert the lead. Bob Dees had a good hold on third. Deubert ran strong the rest of the way for a well earned victory. John Dees settled for second, followed by Bob Dees, Dave Foote, Mike Linder, Dave Everson and Augustine.

Steele Closes In On Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Championship With Eighth Win At Southern Oregon Speedway
David Steele #67 won his eighth Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Main Event.
White City, Oregon...August 25...Leading all the way from his front row start, David Steele won the 20 lap Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. The win was his eighth of the season, and he can lock up his first track championship by just starting the next Main Event. Hunter Magnan rebounded from some recent bad luck with a much-needed second place finish.
Steve Goetz started his night off on a high note with a four lap Trophy Dash win. Steele and Goetz then locked up front row Main Event starting positions with their respective six lap heat race wins. Steele charged into the lead at the drop of the green flag ahead of Goetz and Magnan. Magnan traded third with 2014 champion Gary Anderson a couple of times before getting the spot with a Turn 4 pass on lap four. An inside pass in Turn 4 of the seventh lap put Magnan into second. Rookie Ashtin Hedges was enjoying a good battle with Yreka point leader Marilyn Yawnick for the fifth position. Steele caught slower traffic on lap 13 and soon caught the battle for fifth. Hedges took an infield excursion off of Turn 2 to lose fifth, but he regained the position from Yawnick on lap 17. Hedges managed to stay on the lead lap as Steele won ahead of Magnan, Goetz, Anderson, Hedges, Yawnick, Garrett Fredrickson, Mike Whitaker, Mike McLeod and Kristopher Mix.

Irving Wins First Career JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event
At Southern Oregon Speedway
Dylan Irving #11 won his first career JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event.
White City, Oregon...August 25...Taking the lead from championship contender Tim Hedges in the early stages of the race, Dylan Irving won his first career JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Hedges was working on a potential clean sweep, but when he got on two wheels in Turn 4 and nearly rolled, he fell back two positions as Brandon Wonsyld picked up the second place finish.
Hedges won both his six lap heat and the four lap Trophy Dash, while Irving grabbed the win in the other heat race. Hedges and Irving had front row starts, and Hedges charged into the early lead ahead of Irving. An outside pass on the front stretch of the fourth lap gained Wonsyld third from point leader Bree Tritchler. Moments later, a caution flag flew for Chris Boynton. Hedges continued to lead Irving and Wonsyld on the restart. Working the ninth lap, Hedges got on two wheels in Turns 3 and 4 and lost momentum. Irving passed Hedges at the line, and Wonsyld gained second a lap later. A final caution flag waved for Boynton on lap 16. Irving continued to lead Wonsyld and Hedges on the restart, and they ran in that order to the checkered flag. Dylan Sauer was a season-best fourth, followed by Tritchler, Boynton, John Ferreira, Jenia Silva and Jenna Hedges.
The JOAT Labs Hornets will return on September 8th. Also on the card that night will be the Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars, Late Models, Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks and Valley Store All Late Model Lites. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Wingless Sprint Car Iron Man Race On Tap
For Coos Bay Speedway
Coos Bay, Oregon...If it's the first weekend of September, it must mean it's time for some exciting Wingless Sprint Car racing at Coos Bay Speedway this Saturday night. It's time for the Annual Ironman race, which will pay $1,500 to the winner. The Wingless Sprint Car drivers enjoy making their annual trip to Coos Bay, and they will be joined this weekend by the NASCAR Sportsman Late Models, Street Stocks, Mini Outlaws and the Hornets division.
On the heels of his division-leading fourth Main Event victory at Madras Speedway two weeks ago, reigning Wingless Sprint Car Series champion Rob Lindsay holds a 49 point advantage over Tim Alberding. The title appears to be Lindsey's to lose, but any misstep and two-time feature winner Alberding is ready to make his move. Both drivers enter the night as the two solid favorites to get the big win.
There's also a close race for third in the standings, being led by the consistent Lindsay Barney. She has one win this year, and she's coming off of a $1,000 third place finish in the big race at Southern Oregon Speedway last week. She leads Mark Herz by just 13 points as Herz is in search of his best-ever ranking on the podium. 22 points behind Barney in fifth place is Chris Battaglia. These five are anticipated this weekend along with other notables such as Gene Cannon, Timothy Kennedy, Lance Hallmark and Tommy Moreno. Hallmark was the big winner of the 2016 Coos Bay visit.
After suffering a mechanical issue in a race earlier this season and missing the Main Event, two-time NASCAR Sportsman Late Model champion Wayne Butler has been chasing Dyllan Siewell. Butler picked up his eighth win of the season last time out, moving him to within 18 points of six-time winner Siewell. It's a two-car chase for the championship, and it's going down to the wire. Tom Williams has been pretty consistent this year and has a solid lock on third in the standings. Other drivers to watch for this week include Hornet graduate Braden Fugate, Justin Krossman and Josh Kralicek.
There isn't too much drama left in the Street Stock championship race. With eight feature victories to his credit in 17 starts, Ken Fox leads the consistent David Smith by 72 points. Though Smith has 15 Top 5 finishes, he's still looking for his first win. That is also the case for third-ranked Jeff Thurman. Meanwhile, Steve Dubisar has picked up four wins and has been the biggest challenger to Fox in recent weeks. In The Iron Giant Street Stock Series race last week, Dubisar was an impressive second to the series point leader Brian Cronk. Other drivers to watch for this week include Josh Bearden and 2016 champion Daniel Land.
Fox hasn't been content to just run the Street Stocks. In recent weeks, he has also competed in the Mini Outlaw division and he's won four times, including last week. Sam Talon is a lock to win the championship with 10 feature wins. Fox could potentially grab the third point position before the season is up. Other drivers to watch for include two-time winner Jason Kellum, Tom Siewell and Jason Berrier.
Tyler Tullos appears to be a lock for the Hornet division championship. With seven wins and 16 Top 5 finishes in his 18 starts, Tullos leads April Warmack by 106 points. Last time out, Hannah Robison appeared to be headed for a clean sweep, but mechanical issues sent her to the sidelines before the Main Event was complete. The three-time winner trails Warmack by 78 points, though she has a good hold on third. Kris Parker and Chuck Peck just moved into the fourth and fifth positions and are hot on the trail of their first career wins. With a $500 prize on the line to the winner, other drivers to watch in the race for the win include Leroy Rockwell, Dusty Shingleton, David Kellum and previous winner Peyton Reigard.
Fans of Sprint Car racing get a rare treat this week as the cars are running wingless. It's an exciting style of racing that takes a different driving technique. Cronk Wins Battle At The Beach At Coos Bay Speedway
Coos Bay, Oregon...August 25...Brian Cronk had a $1,000 payday with his Iron Giant Street Stock Series 50 lap Main Event win at Coos Bay Speedway. This was the Second Annual Battle At The Beach event, pitting the touring series against the locals. Cronk had a pole position start and charged into the lead at the green flag. Donald Schott was an early second before surrendering the spot to local star Steve Dubisar. Dubisar kept it close, but Cronk was just a bit faster in victory. 14th starter Andrew Langan won a close three-car battle for third, followed by Schott and Justin Evans. Burnabe Lujan finished sixth, followed by Shawn Cronk, Erik Jarnport, Jeff Thurman and Doug Scott. Brian Cronk enjoyed a clean sweep with his five lap Trophy Dash and eight lap heat race wins. Dubisar and Sean Cronk were the other heat race winners.
Brody Montgomery maintained his NASCAR Super Late Model point lead with a division-leading eighth 20 lap Main Event win. Montgomery set a rapid pace and won by over half a lap in front of Thor Kristensen and final lead lap finisher Deven Brown. Wayne Butler settled for fourth, followed by Chris Kristensen, Chris Ray, Mike Taylor and Kristy Grout. Montgomery enjoyed a clean sweep with five lap Trophy Dash and eight lap heat race wins. Thor Kristensen was the other heat winner.
Wayne Butler picked up his eighth 20 lap Sportsman Late Model Main Event win of the season. Point leader Dyllan Siewell wasn't too far behind Butler in second. Braden Fugate, Josh Kralicek and Tom Williams rounded out the Top 5. Siewell was the five lap Trophy Dash winner, and Butler won the eight lap heat race.
Payton Reigard won the 20 lap Hornets Main Event. Reigard led Travis Pugh by a straightaway at the waving of the checkered flag. Gabrielle Bolles finished third, followed by Leroy Rockwell, point leader Tyler Tullos, Dusty Shingleton, April Warmack, Matt Schoemborn, Hannah Robison and Chuck Peck. Robison won both her eight lap heat race and the five lap Trophy Dash, but she retired from the Main Event with six laps to go. Tullos was the other heat race winner.
Ken Fox won a close race in the Mini Outlaw Main Event, followed by Tom Siewell and point leader Sam Talon. Talon won the five lap Trophy Dash, and Fox was the eight lap heat race winner.
Young Griff Smith won the 15 lap Junior Stingers Main Event ahead of Alex Butler. Smith also won the five lap Trophy Dash and eight lap heat race.
Next Saturday is the Wingless Sprint Car Iron Man race. NASCAR Sportsman Late Models, Street Stock, Mini Outlaws and Hornets will also be competing. For further information, go to www.coosbayspeedway.us.
Houston Wins West Coast Modified Shootout Race
At Douglas County Speedway
Roseburg, Oregon...August 25...Randy Houston won the West Coast Modified Shootout 75 lap Main Event Saturday night at Douglas County Speedway. Houston won a good battle with PRA Modified point leader Tom Elam, who settled for a close second. Andrew Koens was a solid third with Terry Deal Sr the final lead lap finisher in fourth. Darrin Sullivan and Brad Watson were each a lap down in fifth and sixth, respectively. Harlan Cox, John Harvey, Tom Durant and Tom Ford rounded out the Top 10 finishers. Elam set the fast time in qualifying with a 15.485 lap, beating the 15.643 of Deal. Sullivan won the four lap A Dash ahead of Koens, and Harvey on the four lap B Dash in front of Watson.
Point leader Harlan Cox continues to roll in the PRA Hardtop division. Cox picked up the win in the 35 lap Main Event with Mike Batman in close pursuit in second. Kyran Greene outran 2016 champion Greg Hickman to finish third. Donnie Fain was a lap down in fifth, followed by Steve Woods, Jamie Britton, Steve Smith, Troy Gansner and Johnny Cox. Harlan Cox set the fast time of 16.953, beating you 17.045 of Greene. Batman outran Harlan Cox to win the four lap Trophy Dash, and heat races were won by Britton and Batman.
Karl Smith stayed in championship contention with his 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event win. Smith set a rapid pace and won by over half a lap in front of Dale Roth and point leader Chuck Jacobs. Jacobs maintains a two point lead over Roth after this event with Smith 16 points back in third. Kieri Smith was a lap down in forth, followed by Gary Carnes, Logan Barron and Ron Johnson. Karl Smith set the fast time of 17.440 as Roth was second quick with a lap of 18.048. Karl Smith won the four lap Trophy Dash and barely beat Roth back to the line to win the eight lap heat race.
Bruce McMasters scored his third 30 lap Hornets Main Event win of the season. It was a good battle at the front of the pack between McMasters, Jeremy Simms and Ron Johnson. McMasters won a photo finish at the line with Simms for the win as Johnson settled for third ahead of Jeremy Mayfield, Bob Vancil, Bryson Lillard, point leader Pete Lemon, Dylan Grichar, Tasha Gates and Valerie West. McMasters set the fast time in qualifying with a 20.251, beating the 20.411 of Vancil. Jeremy Simms won the four lap Trophy Dash, and eight lap heat races were won by Mayfield and Johnson.

Carrick Gets First Win, Forsberg Champion
At Silver Dollar Speedway
Chico, CA... August 24...15 year old Tanner Carrick made a late move to win his first career 25 lap Sprint Car Main Event Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway. It was Pepsi Trophy Night at the races, and Andy Forsberg used his fifth place finish to win the championship. In the latter stages of the race, Carrick found his groove on the outside and began to make his move. Working lap 23, he moved around the outside of leader Shane Golobic in Turn 2 and took over the lead. Carrick led the rest of the way to win, followed by Golobic, Sean Becker, Tanner Thorson, Forsberg, Kyle Hirst, Shawn Conde, DJ Freitas, Steven Tiner and Kalib Henry. The race had one slow down on lap 22 when Petaluma Speedway champion Jake Haulot spun in Turn 1.
Carrick started his night off on a high note by setting fast time of 11.469. Conde was second quick at 11.633. The 20 car field ran three eight lap heat races, and Golobic, Sean Becker and Haulot scored the Wins.
Jimmy Ford picked up the win in the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event, while Brian Cooper celebrated his track championship. Looking for his second win of the season, 2016 Yreka champion Jimmy Lipke led several laps before being overtaken by Jimmy Ford on lap 15. Driving the Marty Burdine car, Matt Micheli soon moved into second and took up pursuit of Ford. However, Ford led the rest of the way to win, forcing Micheli to settle for second. Cooper came from deep in the pack to finish third, followed by Lipke, Jesse Skidmore, Jake Van Tol, Tyler Rogers, Justin Foux, Mike Merritt and Clinton Earl. Eight lap heat race wins went to Van Tol, Lipke and Micheli.
Matt Micheli came close to a double win as he drove his father Ken Micheli's car to the win in the 20 lap Street Stock Main Event. A lap nine caution flag saw a tangle between Fritz Zanker and Steve Hammett that ended the race for both. After a lap 10 caution flag for debris, the race went non-stop. Reigning champion Phil Marino set the pace with Micheli in pursuit. Unfortunately for Marino, he got a flat tire and exited into the pits on lap 18 as Micheli won ahead of Leif Berglund, Richard Workman, Kyle Allen, Gary Newman, Petaluma Speedway point leader Mitch Machado, Marino, Michael Hellwig, Zanker and Hammett. Despite his absence, Corey Hall was still able to win the championship ahead of 76 year old Newman. Eight lap heat race wins were recorded by Hammett and Micheli.
Reigning Hobby Stock champion Kyle Allen picked up his fifth 20 lap Main Event win of the season, while Jeremy Langenderfer used a fourth place finish to secure the division championship. Colin Ferguson had a shot at the championship, but his race ended on a lap five caution flag. Langenderfer brought out a lap eight caution flag, but despite damage, he was able to continue. Marysville point leader Shannon Collins led the race down the stretch, but Allen made his winning move on lap 18. Allen went on to win, followed by Collins, Nick Vidovich and final lead lap finisher Langenderfer. Earl Adams settled for fifth, followed by James West, Jesse Bryant, Amanda McAbel, Cy Cooper and Mel Byers. Collins and Langenderfer were the eight lap heat race winners.
With the point season over, there are still special events remaining on the schedule. Gold Cup is coming from September 5th through September 8th. The Civil War 360 Sprint Car Series and Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint Series will run on September 5th. The USAC/CRA Wingless Sprints and the Winged 360 Sprints will compete on September 6th. On September 7th and 8th, the World of Outlaw Winged 410 Sprint Cars will be competing along with the NorCal Dwarf Cars. For further information, go to www.silverdollarspeedway.com.
Kasper, Quinonez Win At Mountain Valley Raceway
Hayfork, CA...August 25...Will Kasper won the 25 lap Hobby Stock Main Event Saturday night at Mountain Valley Raceway. Kasper led from the start with Tressen Smith chasing him most of the way. A Cordell Jackson spin exiting Turn 4 brought out a lap 22 caution flag. Smith was hoping to give Kasper a run on the restart, but his car lost power going into Turn 1. He was able to restart, but Kasper led the final three laps to win. Russ Newman held off Smith for the second place finish.
Tony Quinonez came from Orland and won the 20 lap Mini Stock feature. It was an eventful race that saw a good battle between Quinonez and Larry Richardson during the first 15 laps. A lap 12 caution flag waved for a three-car crash that eliminated William Young and 2015 champion Jack Turner. On the restart, contact resulted in Richardson and Quinonez crashing in Turn 4. Andy Blackburn received the black flag at that point. Quinonez led the rest of the way to win ahead of fellow Orland racer William Fogle and Richardson.
Tressen Smith won the Sport Modified Main Event. Burl Richardson won the Hobby Stock Trophy Dash, but he suffered a mechanical problem in the process that caused him to scratch from the Main Event. Larry Richardson was the Mini Stock Trophy Dash winner.

Pit Stops
The Cascade Wingless Sprint Car Challenge race happened last week at Southern Oregon Speedway. One of the things that made this possible was to the sponsorship of Herz Precision Parts. Mark Herz, who is an avid supporter of Wingless Sprint Car racing in Oregon, stepped forward last year to get this show started, and this was the second running of the event. There were several things working against this show, including a couple of big Wingless shows in California. However, the race went on and entertained the crowd with the drivers who were there.
Once he knew the race was happening, car owner Ted Finkenbinder made his commitment to bring the championship car back for an attempted repeat. Once again, he put Geoff Ensign behind the wheel. Ensign is as skilled with a wing as without a wing. Not only has he won the big USAC Turkey Classic in Ventura, he was also the champion at both Watsonville and Petaluma last season. He was clearly the driver to beat going into the night.
Not many of the local drivers were brave enough to take the wings off of their cars and give this race a shot. Some of it might have been the fear of the crash that happened when Kyler Barraza returned to the race after a crash. Honestly, the type of crash that he endured could have happened with a wing or without a wing, but many of the locals either didn't show up or were up in the stands watching.
The one exception was Jeffrey Hudson. This rising young star has gone from winning championships in Outlaw Karts to the Pro Stock championship in 2015 to Sprint Car "Rookie of the Year" at Southern Oregon Speedway a year later and currently second in the Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car Series. In his young career, Jeffrey has racked up quite a list of credentials, and he was certainly a sleeper contender for the big win.
Shawn Arriaga is a third generation racer who has already won championships at both Antioch and Petaluma Speedway. He has also begun to dabble in wingless racing and has upcoming wingless shows at Petaluma and the historic Calistoga Speedway on his schedule. Interesting enough, Southern Oregon Speedway was the first time that Shawn had ventured out of California for a race, and he was very excited to be there.
Third-ranked Oregon Wingless Sprint Car Tour racer Lindsay Barney and fourth-ranked competitor Mark Herz were also there along with Northwest Focus Midget star Jonathan Jorgenson, who was driving for Sterling Kane. There were some good drivers in the field to give the fans a show. The format called for qualifying on the clock with the Top 2 drivers punching their tickets into the Scramble without need of a heat race start. Ensign was no surprise as fast time, and Arriaga looked really good at second quick. Though they were in the heat races, Barney and Jorgenson handled themselves well in scoring their respective victories.
The Scramble would determine the order at the front of the Main Event. The Top 2 qualifiers and the Top 2 finishers of the heat races redrew, and Arriaga got a front row start for the Scramble. He proceeded to lead all eight laps for the win, followed by Barney and Ensign. This gave Arriaga quite a bit of confidence going into the 25 lap race with the $3,500 prize on the line. It paid back pretty well with $1,500 for second, $1,000 for third and even $700 for fourth.
Arriaga led early, but it didn't take long for Ensign to move in and battle him side by side. By lap seven, Ensign had taken the lead. By lap 15, Ensign was a straightaway in front. Ensign clearly appeared to be on his way to the big win, but Arriaga was not being threatened in his quest for second. It wasn't until he slipped off the groove exiting Turn 4 on the 22nd lap that Arriaga paid dearly for his mistake. He hit the wall and flipped to end his race, though he got out of his car unshaken. By then, Hudson had managed to take over third in his battle with Jorgenson and Barney.
When the race resumed, nobody was stopping Ensign from repeating as the champion of the race. Hudson was delighted with the $1,500 second prize, especially considering that his car had an oil leak that his crew was able to fix during the red flag after the Arriaga flip. Barney wasn't letting Jorgenson back around her as she scored the third place finish. All in all, it was a good show for the Sprint Cars, though there was some question where the other competitors were considering this was the biggest paying Wingless Sprint Car race of the year in Oregon.
The Late Model division appears to be a two-car battle for the championship between reigning champion Nathan Augustine and John Dees. Rookie Miles Deubert is still lurking within range, but he needs a few breaks to go his way. One of them actually happened on Saturday night. Deubert was really not even sure what he would be doing going into the season when the opportunity came to take over the 2017 Madras Late Model championship car.
When Miles came out and won the season opener, it seemed like he might be the surprise championship contender. Since then, he's tried different set ups. On Saturday night, he gave everybody a glimpse when he looked pretty good in the heat race, but the best was yet to come in the Main Event.
Deubert followed John Dees into second on lap three as Nathan Augustine began to fall back. Augustine discovered he had a left rear flat tire, and rather than stalling for a yellow flag, he headed for the pits. Not long after that on lap nine, Deubert made the move around Dees for the lead. He took it from there to his second win of the season. For Dees, this was his fourth second place finish of the year as he managed to cut some more points off of the Augustine lead. Augustine is now 13 points in front of Dees, and Deubert is 21 points behind Dees.
For Augustine, the night started with such promise as he won both the Trophy Dash and his heat race ahead of Bob Dees. It looked like he might have the car for a clean sweep on this occasion, but the flat tire put an end to that. it shows the respect and sportsmanship of Augustine that rather than mess up the battle for the lead and stall, he kept going to the pits. However, if something like this were to happen again, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him do things differently.
Meanwhile, Bob Dees was finishing third ahead of Dave Foote in the Main Event. It was a solid night for 2016 champion Dees, and he managed to move to within nine points of Foote, who finished behind him in fourth. In fact, Bob is also just 13 points behind Deubert with a shot at third in the standings once again. There are two races left, and anything can happen. The division welcomed past Pro Stock champion Dave Everson into the field. Dave was still getting things sorted out and would join Augustine in the pits before the finish.
David Steele has had such an amazing season that all he will need to do is start the next Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Main event to lock up his first championship at his home track. This was the goal for the longtime Mini Stock competitor along with taking the spot atop the all time division Main Event winner's list. David knows that he'll get the best competition from his fellow competitors, including teammate Steve Goetz. The 2013 champion Goetz illustrated that well by denying Steele the Trophy Dash win. Goetz joined Steele as a heat race winner and then chased him early in the Main Event. However, Steele wasn't getting beat by anybody as he scored his eighth feature triumph of the season.
Goetz was hoping to ride along in the second position, but Hunter Magnan had other ideas. Magnan has had an up-and-down season in recent weeks, but he continues to hold on to second in the standings. After a disappointing outing at the previous race, Hunter knew he needed to come up big. He had his third season-best second place feature finish, while his closest point rival, reigning champion Kristopher Mix, ended up a disappointed last in the 10 car field. This enabled Magnan to put some distance between himself and Mix in the race for second. He leads Mix by 27 points, while Mix is only 15 points ahead of Goetz in the battle for third.
With two point races left, there is still a chance for a few positions to change hands and some intriguing possibilities. Though Ashtin Hedges might not have been thinking about points after a late start, he finds himself trailing Michael McLeod by just 23 points. Hedges picked up another Top 5 finish in fifth last week. To do so, he had to battle two-time reigning Yreka champion Marilyn Yawnick, and he nearly cost himself as he cut Turn 2 too early and drove into the infield. A few laps later, he regained 5th and managed to keep Steele at bay to keep himself on the lead lap.
Goetz and 2014 champion Gary Anderson battled for the third position with Goetz coming out ahead. For Anderson, the point race is pretty much a done deal, but he'd still like to get a Main Event win before the season comes to its conclusion. To think that he's even out there in a position to possibly win is amazing considering how hard he hit the front wall in his heat race a few races back. The fifth place point position continues to be held by Garrett Fredrickson, but McLeod is only 20 points behind him. Garrett needs to get out there and keep finishing if he wants to hold on to that spot.
2016 JOAT Labs Hornets champion Tim Hedges might have been just a tad bit aggressive during the night. The heat is on in the championship battle, and it's the surprising Bree Tritchler who seems a lock for top rookie honors this year while also standing in Hedges' way in the point lead. Tritchler has picked up four second place finishes and a win this year. Hedges needed to come up big after an overheating issue dropped him back a few more points in the past couple of weeks. Hedges went out there and picked up a Trophy Dash win, and also made an and aggressive move in picking up a heat race victory. Joining him in the heat race winners category was second generation racer Dylan Irving.
We've seen just about everything happen to Dylan this year. He's had his ups, and he's had his downs. But this kid has shown his toughness and has never given up. It wasn't a question of if, but when he would win the Main Event. Hedges was the driver standing in his way, but when he got his car up on two wheels on lap eight in the main event and nearly rolled, Irving made his move into the lead. Amazingly, Hedges kept his composure and maintained third all the way to the checkered flag.
For Irving, there was still the pressure of teammate Brandon Wonsyld, who has picked up two wins and was looking for his third. Dylan wouldn't give up the lead as he held off Brandon for the hard-fought victory. While Hedges cut Tritchler's lead down to six points, Wonsyld was able to take a four point lead over Chris Boynton in a close battle for third. It was just not Boynton's night. Brandon is left to wonder what might have been had he not missed a pair of races. He led the early goings of the season. Irving, meanwhile, is still in the hunt for third, 21 points behind Wonsyld and 17 behind Boynton.
After Jenna Hedges' car was sold to the Silva Racing Team, she finally returned in the #4t car that was driven by her husband of 17 years, Tim, to the 2016 championship. Interesting enough, that car may be the longest running car in this division as it was a part of the program in 2015 as well before Tim bought it. Jenna didn't have a great night, but she still managed to move into sixth in the standings. One driver who did look good was Dylan Sauer. Dylan had his best finish yet in fourth and has moved into the Top 10 in the standings as a result.
Now is the time to make your move. Everything comes to a conclusion after September 22nd. There will be two more races at little Southern Oregon Speedway and four more races on the big track, including this weekend's big R Charles Snyder Salute. There should be some good racing action from now until then, and you never know who might win on any given week.
Moving over to Siskiyou Motor Speedway, we're just over a week away from their return to action after being dark for over a month due to the County Fair. The track will run three weeks in a row and also has a practice scheduled for Sunday, September 16th. While the IMCA Sport Modifieds will have a non point race on the 8th and the Mini Stocks will also be competing, the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks will take center stage.
Most of this season for the Outlaw Pro Stock Association has taken place at Siskiyou Motor Speedway with the exception of two point races at Southern Oregon Speedway and one at Coos Bay Speedway. By far and away, the star of the group has been reigning champion Dr Scott Lenz. Given his experience, it's not too much of a surprise to see Lenz winning as much as he does. Only one point race win has gotten away from him this whole year, and that victory went to 2016 champion Steve Borror. Borror took a detour from the point race as he missed a show, and that has him ranked third in the standings. It seems as if Lenz and Borror would be considered the favorites to win, but that brings another interesting question.
Who is the next likely candidate to get a win with the Outlaw Pro Stock Association? The man who always seems to end up finishing in second or third if his car is still running at the end is the guy sitting in second on points. He's Scott Flowers. He has Main Event wins in the past, but it's been a few seasons. It seems like he's due to win at anytime.
Another driver who is on the cusp of getting his first career win is Matt Harlow. Only one driver has finished inside the Top 5 in all of the point races for the group this year, and that would be Matt. The guy right behind him in the standings, Johnny Cobb, is another one to keep an eye on. Cobb has had his moments, and a win wouldn't be out of the question for him.
Another driver to watch would be John David Duffie. John currently sits sixth in the points. Back in the days when Frank Word III was winning championships at Southern Oregon Speedway, one of the guys who was able to beat him on multiple occasions was John. If the car is handling right for him, he's capable of even beating Lenz on a night when Lenz is running at his best.
The easy pick for the fifth person would be James Flowers. The son of Scott has certainly had his moments during these past two seasons. This year has been a bit more of a challenge for him, but he could strike at anytime. However, our fifth pick will be Scott Bennett. Bennett hasn't been racing so much this year, and we've seen 2015 champion Jeffrey Hudson drive his car more than Scott during the past season and a half. Still, the car is a proven winner, and Scott is capable of getting it to the Winner's Circle.
As we move this conversation over to the regular Siskiyou Motor Speedway divisions, we ask the question about who the next Mini Stock winner could be. We know the Big 3 drivers, point leader Marilyn Yawnick, Mike Whitaker and Terry Kendrick, are the most likely drivers to get the next win. But, who else from the pack is poised to get a win?
After a little bit of consideration, the answer seems pretty obvious. The driver to watch is rookie Darek Alford. Though Zac McMurray is the one leading the rookie race due to Alford's absence from some races, Darek has clearly demonstrated his ability with heat race and Trophy Dash wins and a third place Main Event finish in the most recent race. Driving the former Devon Weiser car, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Darek get the win and beat the other three, while they're still running, to do it.
In the IMCA Sport Modified division, the driver that jumps out at us is Ryder Boswell. Boswell has finished as high as second, and he is a past Mini Stock Main Event winner. He has given it a good run this year in second in the standings, and he is due for a victory. Randy Wright is certainly another name that jumps out at us, and he does have a Main Event win in this class back in 2016.
Siskiyou Motor Speedway fans jonesing for some more racing action will get what they want on September 8th, 15th and 22nd. They also have an Outlaw Kart program this Friday night. We're still anxiously awaiting the purse information for the annual Rod Restad Memorial Race. Last season, both the IMCA Modified and IMCA Sport Modified divisions competed for more money, and that is again expected to be the case this year. Word is that the track is looking to put some more money on the line for the Mini Stocks. Potential sponsors should contact the track webpage or look them up and contact them on Facebook.
Speaking of big races, Coos Bay Speedway has a big event they like to run to end their season. It's the Lucas Oil Open Show, presented by the Prather family. By then, point racing is over, and this is the last opportunity for Oregon racers to get an outdoor event in before the bad weather comes. Once again, Late Models are going to be headlining this event, and the purse will include a $1,200 first prize with $150 minimum to start the Main Event. The Street Stocks get a $500 paycheck to win, the Sportsman Late Models will run for $300 to win and the Four Cylinder Open and Hornet divisions will get $200 to win. if last season's car count is any indication, this show, slated for October 6th, should be a good one.
Of course, Coos Bay Speedway still has a few big events left on their calendar before they get there, and that includes the $1,500 to win Ironman Wingless Sprint Car show this Saturday night. They will also have the ISCS Winged Sprint Cars on September 29th, and there's also a Rolling Thunder Big Rig racing event coming between now and then.
The NASCAR Super Late Model championship is well in hand. Considering the state and track point fund monies, Brody Montgomery is headed for a $5,000 championship. He ran enough last season that he likely isn't eligible for the $1,000 bonus for the top rookie. The total monies for second in the standings isn't too shabby either, and that could be as much as $3,000 to Thor Kristensen. Kristensen got off to a late start, but he's made up for lost time with some very impressive runs in the most recent races. Recently, he overtook Chris Ray for second in the standings. Ray stands to make four digit point fund money as well.
The money being offered due to the NASCAR sanctioning was hoped to entice a few more racers to Coos Bay. Some drivers have been a little slow to get on board with this, but they had a better turnout last week with eight cars in a race that was won by Montgomery. Considering the money being offered by NASCAR, this is really the best thing going for Late Model drivers in terms of point fund money on the dirt on the West Coast. It's been nice to see racers like Joey Tanner, Josh Sim and Tom Elam come to town this year and pick up wins. Hopefully more of that will continue.
While the Super Late Model division isn't listed on the schedule this week, the Sportsman Late Models are. This division has the closest championship battle going. It looked like Dyllan Siewell had things well in control early in the season after two-time champion Wayne Butler scratched with mechanical issues before one of the early-season Main Events. However, Butler just kept coming back and racing hard. In the win department, Butler has eight victories to six for Siewell. When the Outlaw Pro Stock Association came to town and increased the car count, Butler cut Siewell's point lead in half. After his eighth win last week, Butler only trails by 18 points. An increased car count would certainly go a long ways towards helping Butler overtake Siewell as the point season is nearing its conclusion.
Braden Fugate has done an exceptional job in the past couple of years in a Hornet. Though he hasn't been racing for points, he's won over half-a-dozen features since last year, and that seemed to be his cue to jump into the Sportsman Late Model division a couple of races ago. He's a welcome addition to the class as we haven't seen Charlie Withers in the field in recent weeks.
We're also looking at the Street Stock division with interest. Things got dire for this class at one point, but management has not given up on the cause. Last week, the track hosted an Iron Giant Street Stock Series race that produced a field of over 20 cars. It was Iron Giant Series point leader Brian Cronk getting the win as he nears the championship. The Big Iron Giant race at Willamette Speedway this Saturday night will decide things.
Another impressive story was the second place performance of Steve Dubisar. Ken Fox, and for that matter Justin Krossman, can breathe a sigh of relief that Steve hasn't been running every race. If he had been, it's likely that he would be a two-time champion right now. When he's on, it's very difficult to beat him. He had eight victories last year and has four so far this year. Things get interesting when he's in town battling current point leader and eight time winner Ken Fox. Fox has done a great job this year and has also started running and winning Mini Outlaw races in recent weeks.
Two drivers we're watching in the quest to get their first feature wins of the season are Jeff Thurman and David Smith. Smith has made just about every race this season and has a solid hold on second in the standings. If Fox were to slip up in any way, Smith would be there to make a move on the point lead.
We've watched the Hornet division car count grow over the past couple of races, which is always good news. Therefore, management is rewarding the drivers with a $500 to win race this week. Obviously, the driver who jumps out as the one to watch for this win is point leader Tyler Tullos. However, Tullos has been deprived of the Winner's Circle in the past few races. Hannah Robison picked up the win two races ago and was on her way to a clean sweep when mechanical issues derailed her attempt last week. Peyton Reigard got that win. At this point, Tullos seems headed for a championship, April Warmack has a good hold on second and Robison appears to have third in the standings locked up.
While Coos Bay is getting ready for good things, people are happy in Hayfork. Mountain Valley Raceway is three races old this year, and it's been an entertaining show. Though the car count isn't where they would like it to be, the drivers out there are racing hard and entertaining the fans. This was again the case last week.
An invitation was put out to the people of Orland after it was announced that their Fairgrounds would be the base camp for the firefighting crews. Come on over to Hayfork and race. Two drivers in the Four Cylinder classes did just that. Mini Truck racer Tony Quinonez and Mini Stock racer William Fogel showed up and ran what was a very eventful Mini Stock Main Event. At one point, a three-car crash eliminated two of the six drivers. Even Trophy Dash winner Larry Richardson retired from third, leaving Quinonez to win ahead of Fogle.
Burl Richardson won the Hobby Stock Trophy Dash and seemed like a driver who could win the Main Event. Unfortunately, mechanical issues in the Trophy Dash sidelined him. Reigning champion Will Kasper seems to be picking up right where he left off last season. After winning the Clyde Cordell Memorial Race two weeks ago, he picked up the win after being challenged early on by Tressen Smith.
Smith saw his car lose power temporarily on a late restart. He got it started again for the final restart, but Russ Newman was able to beat him back the line in second. Newman was a Main Event winner last year who seems likely to get one again this year. Smith, meanwhile, has gotten on board with the Sport Modified show and was the winner of that race. He and multi-time Hobby Stock champion Josh Smith were both running Pro Stocks a couple of seasons ago, though that division didn't quite take off. It's hoped that things will work out better for the Sport Modified class.
Car count may not be huge, but there's plenty of enthusiasm. The track also runs a wild and crazy Enduro division to end the night. The track is watered down real good, and the insanity that breaks out in their Main Event is something you have to be there to see. Plus, they run Quad Races. Mountain Valley Raceway will return to action on September 8th.
