Fettinger Increases Point Lead With Victory
At Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon...July 20...Zach Fettinger won the 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Fettinger is the current point leader, and he became the fifth different winner in as many races. Fettenger had to overtake early leader Dave Duste Jr, who was making his second appearance of the season.
It was also a clean sweep performance for Fettinger as he picked up wins in both the four lap Trophy Dash and the his eight lap heat race. Jesse Bailey won a good battle with Jeremy Richey to pick up the second heat race victory. Reigning champion Albert Gill had motor issues and scratched from the Main Event.
Duste had a front-row start for the Main Event and charged into the early lead in front of Duane Orsburn. Despite starting at the back of the pack, Fettinger made a big move in Turn 4 to gain fourth on lap two, and a yellow flag flew for David Satterfield in Turn 2. Duste continued to lead Orsburn on the restart as an inside pass in Turn 4 gained Fettinger third from Justin Foux. Fettinger made a similar move on Orsburn on lap five to take over second, and Foux followed with an inside pass in Turn 4 on lap six to take third. Duste continued to set the pace through a pair of yellow flags, but Fettinger was able to make the inside pass in Turn 4 of the 13th lap to gain the lead. Bailey was in a battle with Jimmy Lipke and Orsburn for the fourth position, but Orsburn spun on lap 15. Bailey gained fourth on lap 17. Fettinger set a good pace up front, but Duste followed him on the bottom groove not too far behind in second. Behind this 1-2 finish, Foux finished third, followed by Bailey, Andy Freeman, Orsburn, Ray Kniffen Jr, Satterfield, Lipke and Richey.
The IMCA Modifieds will return on August 10th along with the IMCA Sport Modifieds. They will be part of the $2,000 to win Ironhead Nationals event for the Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars. Possinger Scores IMCA Sport Modified Win
At Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon...July 20...Braxton Possinger won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Possenger led the race from the second lap, but he had to endure eight restarts along the way to victory.
Jantzen Knips kicked things off with a four lap Trophy Dash win. There were four eight lap heat races, and wins were earned by Isaac Sanders, Possinger, Donald Bandfield and point leader Jorddon Braaten. Lloyd Speer scratched after motor issues in his heat race.
Possinger started in the second row with Isaac Sanders lined up in the fifth row. Joby Shields led the opening lap before Possinger raced into the lead with Billy Richey following into second. Chris Silva spun for a lap three yellow flag, and Mike Medel slipped past Richey for second on the restart. However, an inside pass in Turn 4 of the fifth lap put Isaac Sanders into second. Possinger had already started to pull away to a good lead when a yellow flag flew once again on lap five. Possinger continued to lead Sanders and Medel on the restart. A Turn 4 pass on lap eight gained Branden Wilson the third position, but sixth row starter Braaten had already found his way into fourth. Braaten made an inside pass in Turn 4 on lap nine to take third. Despite two more yellow flags during the final 10 laps, Possinger continued to lead the way, leaving the Sanders brothers and Braaten to shoot it out for second. Matt Sanders briefly got by Isaac Sanders for second on lap 15, but both Isaac Sanders and Braaten went by on the inside on lap 18 to regain second and third. Nobody was stopping Possinger as he scored the well-earned victory ahead of Isaac Sanders, Braaten, Matt Sanders, Wilson, Shields, Medel, Matt Ruf, Michael Rule and Wyatt Westfall.
The IMCA Sport Modifieds will be back in action on August 10th along with the IMCA Modifieds. They will be part of the $2,000 to an Ironhead Nationals event for the Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars. Cox Makes Surprise Visit For Sprint Car Victory
At Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon...July 20...Kinzer Cox won the 25 lap Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Cox is one of the top competitors at Cottage Grove Speedway, and he was making a surprise visit. He had to hold off a late surge from point leader Mike Wheeler to collect the $1,000 victory.
There were 15 competitors in the field, and Cox held off rookie Johnny Burke to pick up the first eight lap heat race victory. Tanner Holmes outran Bailey Hibbard to win the second heat, and reigning champion David Hibbard finished ahead of Jared Hood to win the third heat. The Top 2 finishers in each heat ran a six lap Scramble to determine the first three rows of the Main Event. David Hibbard continued his momentum by winning that race ahead of Cox and Burke.
Cox led the opening lap of the Main Event before a yellow flag waved for Hood. Cox continued to lead David Hibbard and Charlie Thompson on the restart. Aaron Miller did a complete 360 in Turn 2 and kept going, but the yellow flag waved on lap three. Cox continued to lead David Hibbard and Holmes on the restart, but Holmes made an inside pass down the backstretch on lap six to take second from David Hibbard. Following another yellow flag for Hood, Cox continued to lead Holmes and David Hibbard as Wheeler was battling closely with Thompson for the fourth position. Wheeler finally settled the matter by gaining fourth on lap 11, and he set his sights on David Hibbard. Wheeler slipped past Hibbard for third on lap 19 as Cox was working slower traffic in the lead. Wheeler quickly caught Holmes and passed him for second on lap 21. Wheeler swiftly closed in on Cox, but slower traffic in Turn 2 impeded his momentum on lap 23. On the final lap, Wheeler dove into Turns 3 and 4 in a final attempt to make a bid for the lead. However, Cox would prevail at the checkered flag. Wheeler settled for second, followed by Holmes, Jake Wheeler, Bailey Hibbard, Thompson, Anissa Curtice, Burke, Enrique Jaime and TJ Winningham.
August 3rd is the Third Annual Cascade Wingless 360 Sprint Car Challenge Race, presented by Herz Precision Parts. That show pays $3,500 to win for the Sprint Cars. Also competing will be the Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars, Valley Store All Late Model Lites and the OTRO Hardtops. Elliott Increases Late Model Point Lead With Clean Sweep
At Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon...July 20...Trent won The 25 lap Late Model Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Elliott led from the outset and scored his second win of the season. The win paid $1,000 with an increase from the Northwest Trucking Academy, and it also capped a clean sweep performance for the current point leader.
Elliott started things off by winning the four lap Trophy Dash and continued by holding off Dave Everson to win his eight lap heat race. Darren Coffell out dueled 2016 champion Bob Dees to win the second heat. Motor issues sidelined Mark Wauge after hot laps.
Elliott motored ahead at the start of the Main Event, followed by Coffell and Everson. Eric Massey spun in Turn 2 for a lap two caution flag, and Elliott resumed command on the restart. Elliott was working slower traffic by lap eight, and Clint Massey spun for a lap 12 yellow flag. As Elliott continued to lead Coffell and Everson on the restart, a battle developed for fourth between 2017 champion Nathan Augustine, Dees and Late Model Lites point leader Greg Arnold. Arnold took the fifth position from Dees on lap 15. An inside pass in Turn 4 of the 18th lap gained Arnold fourth from Augustine, but he had a mechanical issue send him to the pits on lap 21. Elliott set a rapid pace and was never seriously challenged by second place finisher Coffell. Everson matched his season-best effort in third, followed by Augustine, Dees, Eric Massey, Dave Foote, Miles Deubert, Arnold and Cliff Massey.
The Late Models will be back on August 3rd. This is also the Third Annual Cascade Wingless 360 Sprint Car Challenge Race, presented by Herz Precision Parts. That show pays $3,500 to win for the Sprint Cars. Also competing will be the Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars, Valley Store All Late Model Lites and the OTRO Hardtops. King Lucky In SODCA Dwarf Car Sweep
At Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon...July 20...Josh King won the 20 lap SODCA Dwarf Car Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. King had a bit of luck on his side when mechanical issues ended Brock Peters' run at the front of the pack. King led the rest of the way to cap a clean sweep performance.
An impressive 25 Dwarf Cars signed in to race, and they needed four eight lap heat races. King won the first heat race ahead of Ryan Smith, while Chad Cardoza outran Jesse Lorenz to win the next heat. Cody Peters went flag-to-flag to beat Steve Walker in the third heat, and Camden Robustelli was unstoppable in winning the fourth heat ahead of Paul Haslow. The Top 2 finishers in each heat race ran the six lap A Dash, won by King ahead of Cody Peters. The third and fourth place heat race finishers ran the six lap B Dash, and Mason Lewman made a last lap pass on Kalvin Morton to win that race.
King led the pack to the Main Event green flag, and Robustelli slipped past Lewman for second on lap two. King continued to lead Robustelli on a lap six restart, but Cody Peters moved past Robustelli for second on lap nine. Chad Cardoza ran close in this battle as Brock Peters had to work his way up from the last starting position. Problems on the backstretch on lap 13 ended a Top 5 run for Morton. King led Robustelli on the restart as Brock Peters slipped past his son Cody Peters and Cardoza to take over third. An intense, three-car battle developed for the lead with Robustelli making an outside pass in Turn 4 on lap 16 to gain the spot. However, an inside move in Turn 4 a lap later put Brock Peters into lead. King also managed to get around Robustelli. Mechanical issues developed in the Peters car right after a yellow flag waved for Ashleigh Strain and Bud Lorentz in Turn 2 on lap 18. With Peters heading to the pits, King had the lead. Cardoza briefly took second from Robustelli, but when the checkered flag waved, King was a happy winner ahead of Robustelli, Cardoza, Cody Peters, Smith, Steve Walker, Fred Hay, Strain, Lewman and Michael Johnson.
The Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars will be back on August 3rd as part of the big Cascade Wingless 360 Sprint Car Challenge Race, presented by Herz President Parts. The Sprint Cars will be racing for $3,500 to win that night. Also competing will be the Late Models, Valley Store All Late Model Lites and OTRO Hardtops. NASCAR Racing And Lucky Rides For The Kids
At Coos Bay Speedway
Coos Bay, Oregon...Coos Bay Speedway is coming off of the exciting Tidal Wave Weekend Late Model event with another exciting lineup this Saturday night. It will be Kids Lucky Rides Night at the races, meaning the kids will get an opportunity to ride along with their favorite drivers during intermission. NASCAR Whelen All American Series racing action will include the America's Mattress Super Late Models, Sportsman Late Models, Street Stocks, Mini Outlaws, Hornets and Junior Stingers. Also back in action will be the Winged Sprint Cars.
Preston Luckman continues to lead the Super Late Model championship battle. Last weekend saw him pick up a pair of Top 5 finishes to give him eight out of his eight starts. With three wins to his credit, he leads two-time winner and reigning champion Brody Montgomery by 28 points. Montgomery had some problems last weekend, but the damage to his point effort could have been far worse.
Wayne Butler continues to look for his first win of the season, but he stretched his advantage to 40 points over Thor Kristensen in the race for third. As there is some pretty good point fund money on the line, even for third, this battle is significant. Toby McIntyre had a good weekend, moving him to within 10 points of Kristensen as he looks for his first win of the season. He does have four Top 5 finishes. These five could be there this week, and others to watch for include Chris Kristensen, Deven Brown, Richard Wallace and Mike Taylor.
The Winged Sprint Cars are only making their third appearance of the season. The consistent Donovan Prather leads the standings, though the wins have been taken by the previous two champions, Brett Hulsey and Lawrence Van Hoof. Prather only leads Hulsey by four points, while Kyle Oaks, Austin Sause and Ricky Hulsey are all 10 points out. It's anybody's guess who might come out the winner in this point battle.
It's looking more and more like Braden Fugate could be the driver to win the Sportsman Late Model championship, but Fugate isn't about to get too comfortable. The very nature of the point system means that even though he has won seven of the eight races, he's only fourteen points ahead of Mike Taylor. Taylor prevented Fugate from getting an eighth win last weekend when he got his first ever victory. These two drivers should be there this week, and others to watch for include Tom Williams, Darren Smith and reigning champion Dyllan Siewell.
Steve Dubisar has six wins in eight starts as he commands the Street Stock championship battle. In fact, Mini Outlaw star Sam Talon is firmly in the second position, leading rookie Peyton Reigard in that battle. These three drivers should be there this week, and you never know who else might show up. Reigning champion Ken Fox competed last Saturday. Some of the drivers to watch for this week include David Smith, Justin Krossman, Charlie Withers and 2016 champion Daniel Land.
Because car count has been light this year in the Mini Outlaw division, there have been a couple of occasions in which they didn't actually race. Two-time reigning champion Sam Talon holds a commanding lead in the point race as he has won all seven races held so far. Jason Kellam is second. These two drivers generally show up for every race, and others to watch for this week include Dan Daniels, Bob Oliver, Jason Berrier and the VW Beetle of Rob Lauver.
After last weekend's double-header, the Hornet division point race has been shaken up a little bit. One-time winner Ray Marshall has moved into the lead, but his advantage is only 12 tallies ahead of Hannah Robison. Robison is a four-time winner this season, and she has at times been very dominant. Steven Parker is six points behind Robison as he fell from the lead into third after last weekend. These three should be there.
Two-time winner Tyler Tullos holds fourth in the standings, 26 points out of the lead in this close battle. Gabrielle Boles took a tumble last weekend. She has looked very impressive this year with multiple second place finishes as a win seems to be within her grasp. Some of the racers to watch for this week include Kris Parker, Dusty Shingleton, Charity Hinkle, Jesse McIntyre and Alyssa Johnson.
Griff Smith now has five wins in the Junior Stingers division, and he leads Alex Butler by 10 points in the championship chase. Butler and third-ranked James Shingleton both have a win to their credit as well. They've been joined in recent weeks by Jake Vincent and Mary Vincent as this Hornets class for kids 11 to 14 years old continues to grow.
With Lucky Kids Rides available during the intermission and virtually every regular division Coos Bay has to offer on the schedule, this will be a week in which you'll want to be at the speedway. For further information, go to www.coosbayspeedway.us.
Mayea, Frick Win Tidal Wave Weekend Races
At Coos Bay Speedway
Coos Bay, Oregon...July 20-21...Rob Mayea and Kyle Frick were the big Main Event winners on Tidal Wave Weekend at Coos Bay Speedway. The NASCAR America's Mattress Super Late Models were running for an increased purse, which included $1,200 paydays for the Main Event winners on both Saturday night and Sunday. Frick won the 35 lap race on Saturday night, and Mayea won the 50 lap finale on Sunday afternoon.
Mayea was on the pole for the Sunday race and led every lap in victory. Wayne Butler shared the front row with Mayea, but he was quickly shuffled out of the Top 3 as point leader Preston Luckman moved into second at the start. Mayea set a rapid pace in winning the Sunday feature by about half a straightaway ahead of Luckman. Toby McIntyre finished third, followed by Richard Wallace, Butler, Eric Massey, Chris Kristensen, Deven Brown and Brody Montgomery. The Sunday heat races were won by Wallace and Frick, while McIntyre picked up the five lap Trophy Dash.
Kyle Frick had the pole for the Saturday Main Event and charged into the lead at the waving of the green flag. Wallace briefly held second before surrendering the position to Mayea on the third lap. Mayea wasn't too far behind Frick, but Frick would prevail at the checkered flag. Luckman was a solid third, followed by Montgomery, Wallace, McIntyre, Chris Kristensen, Deven Brown, Thor Kristensen and Trina Post. Eight lap heat race wins went to McIntyre and Luckman with Montgomery picking up the five lap Trophy Dash win.
Point leader Braden Fugate and Mike Taylor won 20 lap Sportsman Late Model Main Events. The Sunday feature was led by Fugate for 12 laps before Taylor made his winning pass. Taylor won ahead of Fugate and Garrett Smith. Taylor also won the eight lap heat race on Sunday, while Fugate picked up the five lap Trophy Dash. On Saturday, Fugate went flag-to-flag to win the Main Event, followed by Taylor, Tom Williams and Smith. Taylor won the eight lap heat race, while Fugate was the five lap Trophy Dash winner.
Point leader Steve Dubisar was the 20 lap Street Stock Main Event winner on both Sunday and Saturday. Dubisar swept the Main Event, eight lap heat race and five Trophy Dash on Sunday with Sam Talon finishing second. On Saturday, Dubisar jumped into the lead at the start and won the Main Event ahead of reigning champion Ken Fox and Justin Krossman. Heavy attrition in the preliminaries saw Trophy Dash winner Daniel Land, Talon and Charlie Withers all scratch prior to the feature. Fox won the eight lap heat race.
Talon did sweep the Mini Outlaw 20 lap Main Event, five lap Trophy Dash and heat race on Saturday with Jason Kellam coming in second in all three races.
In the Hornet 25 lap Main Events, it was Peyton Reigard winning on Saturday and Tyler Tullos getting the win on Sunday. In the Saturday race Tullos led for three laps before Reigard went by for the lead. Reigard led the rest of the way. Tullos battled Trace Fugate for a few laps before eventually finishing second. Fugate settled for third, followed by Ray Marshall, Jesse Vincent, Gabrielle Boles and Hannah Robison. Boles and Robison won their eight lap heat races, and Tullos picked up the five lap Trophy Dash win.
The Sunday Hornet race saw Tullos get the win. Tullos charged into the lead at the start and led Robison all the way in victory Marshall settled for third, followed by Fugate, Steven Parker and Peyton Reigard. Robison won the eight lap heat race, and Tullos picked up the five lap Trophy Dash.
Point leader Griff Smith had a big weekend in winning both 15 lap Junior Stinger Main Events. The Saturday race saw Smith picking up the win ahead of Alex Butler and Drake Vincent. On Sunday, Smith again jumped into the lead at the waving of the green flag. Smith won by about a straightaway as James Singleton was a solid second. Alex Butler finished third, followed by Drake Vincent and Mary Vincent. The Sunday eight lap heat race win went to Smith, and Shingleton picked up the five lap Trophy Dash victory. On Saturday, Smith won both the heat race and Trophy Dash.
Racing at the oval track continues this Saturday night with a NASCAR Whelen All American Series lineup that will include the America's Mattress Super Late Models, Sportsman Late Models, Street Stocks, Mini Outlaws, Hornets and Junior Stingers. The Winged Sprint Cars will also be back. It will be a night that includes Lucky Rides for the kids. For further information, go to www.coosbayspeedway.us.
Killingsworth, Borror, Kendrick Win
At Siskiyou Golden Speedway
Yreka, CA...July 20...Ethan Killingsworth won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event Saturday night at Siskiyou Golden Speedway. This was O'Reilly Auto Parts Loggers Night, and it was also the second win of the season for Killingsworth as he is making a strong bid for the division championship.
Killingsworth shared the front row with previous winter Randy Wright, but he charged into the lead. It was Merissa Hanson providing the bigger challenge as she settled into second, but Killingsworth would prevail at the checkered flag. Reigning champion Trevor Tiffee made his return to the speedway and charged from the sixth row to finish third, followed by Colt Boswell, Dennis Jorgensen, Donovan Rogers, Doug Franklin, Wright, Ryder Boswell and Chad Wormington. Henson was the four lap Trophy Dash winner, and the eight lap heat race victories went to Wright and Killingsworth.
Steve Borror won the 20 lap Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stock Main Event. Borror is the 2016 champion. Front row starter Bryan Hammond led some early laps with Matt Harlow looking strong after his disappointing night in Medford the week before. However, Borror would get by both of them and go on to collect his first feature win of the season. Hammond was a season-best second, followed by Harlow, Jeffery Hudson, Scott Flowers, Jerry Bartlett, Rick Lukens, Colby Hammond, Ken LaPlant and point leader Dr Scott Lenz. Lenz and Hudson won their respective eight lap heat races, while Borror picked up the four lap Trophy Dash victory.
Terry Kendrick rebounded from some recent bad luck to grab the victory in the 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event. This was the third win of the season for the past division champion. Dan Borror was working on a clean sweep after holding off point leader Zak McMurry to win both the four lap Trophy Dash and eight lap heat race. Borror and Darek Alford were both in the hunt, but Terry Kendrick came from the third row to score a much-needed feature win. Alford matched his season-best effort with another second place finish, followed by Borror, Mike Whitaker, Terry Alford, Michael Kendrick and McMurry.
The speedway will be dark for a few weeks to accommodate The Siskiyou Golden Fair. Action returns on August 17th with Back To School Night. The Iron Giant Street Stock Series will be coming back for a rain makeup event. Joining them will be the IMCA Sport Modifieds and the Mini Stocks. Hanakahi, Taylor, Ranney Bring Excitement
To Little Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon...July 19...Alex Hanakahi won the 12 lap Open Bike Main Event Friday night at Little Southern Oregon Speedway. The Open Bike Main Event saw a red flag when Trevor Taylor crashed in Turn 3. He needed medical assistance for a possible rib injury. Taylor had won the 250cc and 450cc Bike Main Events.
After the first attempt to start the Open Bike Main Event was called back, Taylor had to start last on the eight bike grid. Taylor quickly charged into third behind Hanakahi and Mya Maffei. Taylor went low exiting Turn 4 and gained the second position from Maffey on lap five. As they worked the sixth lap, Taylor attempted to get underneath Hanakahi as they entered Turn 3. However, Taylor crashed, which resulted in a red flag. He was taken to the hospital to check for possible rib injuries. The report from his family was that he was doing okay.
Hanakahi resumed his rapid pace on the restart and repelled Maffei's determined efforts for the remainder of the race to score the victory. Brooke Lozano made a late move around Theo Lount to grab third as Lount and Zach Burkdoll made up the remainder of the Top 5.
Trevor Taylor had been on a roll up until the Open Bike Main Event. Taylor led all the way to win his fourth 12 lap 250cc Bike Main Event with Maffei a close second and Lount finishing third.
Taylor also won his third 12 lap 450cc Bike Main Event. Maya Maffei led that race for three laps, Hanakahi was running in second when he crashed in Turn 1. There was a red flag, but he was okay and restarted at the back of the pack. Maffei's bike failed to start on the ensuing restart, and Taylor took the lead from there all the way to the checkered flag. Lozano, Hanakahi, Lount and Maffei made up the the balance of the Top 5.
Caleb Ranney won his first ever Beginners Box Stock Main Event. Ranney had a perfect evening as he won both of his heat races. The 15 lap Main Event ran rapidly with no slow downs, and Ranney led Isaac Grimes from the start. By the sixth lap, Ranney had lapped the third place driver, and he won by a half-lap ahead of Grimes. They exchanged the lead yet again, but it was Ward who received the white flag first. Herbert made an outside pass to take the lead entering Turn 1 and grabbed the victory ahead of Ward and MiKayla Burson. Mike Burson Sr took a tumble on the back staightaway to end his night early.
In the Big Trike Main Event, Garrett Stookey led the race for nine laps before Herbert went charging around on the outside as they entered Turn 1. Thomas Pavlik and championship contender Keith Ross both made late passes on Collins to finish third and fourth, respectively. Collins settled for fifth, followed by Maurice Merrill, John Camper, Paul Stephens and Steve Martin. The eight lap heat race wins were earned by Collins, Smock, Langenderfer and Spencer.
Tony Richards continues to chip away at the point lead of Denny McNary following his latest 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event win. Richards raced into the lead at the start, followed by McNary and RJ Baker. Richards pulled away from the pack, leaving a close battle between McNary, Baker and Josh Jacobo for the second position. On the ninth lap, however, there was contact, resulting in a McNary spin in the second turn. Jacobo crashed into McNary with his car landing on top of the McNary car. Jacobo and Baker were out of the race along with Ryan Owens. Richards led Cort Marchuk and McNary on the restart, and they ran that way throughout the entire second half of the race with Richards prevailing once again. Richards and McNary won their respective eight lap heat races.
Dan Webster continues to be a dominant force in the Mini Truck division as he won another 20 lap Main Event. Webster led Tony Quinonez at the start with William Fogle settling into third on lap two. Championship contender Kalvin Kvalvik gained third with a high pass in Turn 1 on the fifth lap. A low pass in Turn 4 of the 11th lap gamed Kvalvik the second position with Fogle following into third. However, Kvalvik spun in Turn 2 a lap later, resulting in a crash that involved Quinonez. Webster led Anthony Esquaville and Beau Chandler on the restart, but Fogle slipped past Chandler for third on lap 14. Kvalvik took the third position from Fogle with a high pass in Turn 4 a lap later. As he worked the 17th lap, Kvalvik made an inside pass in Turn 2 to gain second from Esquaville. However, nobody was stopping Dan Webster as he scored the impressive victory ahead of Kvalvik, Esquaville, Fogle and Chandler. Eight lap heat race wins were earned by Quinonez and Webster.
Jake Van Tol defeated a short field of B Modifieds to win the 20 lap Main Event. As Van Tol ran away out front, Richard Vander Ploeg won a race long battle with Mike Merritt for the second position. Van Tol also won the eight lap heat race.
Kylee Porath won the 20 lap Wingless 250 Micro Main Event. Point leader Mike McCarthy led the first few laps before a restart enabled Porath to take over. Porath went on to win ahead of McCarthy and Lester Elsey.
Shelly Martin won the special Powder Puff race, which included cars from the Pure Stock, Mini Truck and Mini Stock classes. Martin was driving the Steve Martin #4 Pure Stock.
The track has called a special play day for this Saturday, but the next race will happen on August 3rd. The Pure Stocks will be back in action along with the Wingless Spec Sprints, Mini Stocks, 600 Micro Sprints and the Wingless 250 Micro Sprints. For further information, go to the Orland Raceway Facebook page.
Roth, Cox, Kennerly Win At Douglas County Speedway
Roseburg, Oregon...July 20...Dale Roth won the Adcox Outlaw 100 lap Main Event Saturday night at Douglas County Speedway. The special four race series brings together vehicles from a few different classes for an extra distance race. Roth used the win to stretch his advantage in the point race to 57 ahead of Mike Batman. Roth was chased across the line by Hardtop stars Harlon Cox and Batman, in second and third respectively. Robbie Ulam finished fourth, followed by Kael Beck, Jamie Britton and Tom Elam. Roth won the eight lap heat race.
The PRA Hornets division got an opportunity to shine in the annual Hornet's Nest 50 lap race. When the checkered flag waved, it was Michael Kennerly winning by over a straightaway ahead of Richard Dickenson. The win moved Kennerly into second in the standings, but he trails Dickenson by over 100 points. Ron Johnson finished third as the only driver one lap down in the extra distance race. Paul Corbett, Zachary Asumendi and Bart Pulse were each two laps down in the fourth through sixth positions. Robert Vancil settled for seventh, followed by Tyler Organ, Valerie West and Drake Phillips. Eight lap heat races were won by Kennerly, Pulse and Vancil. Cherish Wilson and Burnie Bryant won the two four lap Trophy Dash races.
Reigning champion Harlon Cox scored an impressive win in the PRA Hardtop Main Event. Cox outran Kael Beck by nearly half a lap. Rodger Beck wasn't too far behind in the third position as Chuck Jacobs was the final lead lap finisher. 2016 champion Greg Hickman settled for fifth, followed by Donnie Fain, Dean Cast, point leader Kyran Greene and Brian Lenihan. The successful night by Cox enabled him to move to within 16 points of Greene in the point battle. Eight lap heat race wins were earned by Jacobs and Cox, and four lap Trophy Dash honors went to Cox, making it a clean sweep performance for him.
In the bump to pass J Class, Ron Johnson scored the win on the 20 lap race. The cars compete on a mini oval track on the front straightaway. Johnson was trailed by Dylan Grichar, Drake Phillips, Jeremy Simms and Zachary Asumendi.
Racing action continues this Saturday night with the annual Street Stock Smackdown event. The Iron Giant Street Stock Series will be town for the big race once again. Also competing will be the PRA Sport Modifieds, Hornets and Super Stocks. The event will be presented by Oregon Tool and Supply and Roseburg Collision Center. Racing This Saturday Night At Mountain Valley Raceway
Hayfork, CA...People are still talking about the great time they had at the Independence Day Celebration at Mountain Valley Raceway. Those who were there witnessed an amazing Fireworks Display and some exciting racing. This Saturday night, the racing program continues with a full slate of Hobby Stock, Mini Stock, B Modified and Enduro racing.
The good competition in the Hobby Stock division has made this show fun to watch. Russ Newman, Tressen Smith and Josh Smith are among the feature winners so far. The Clyde Cordell Memorial is coming up in August and this Saturday's race will be the perfect opportunity for the racers to make sure their cars are ready for the show. Burl Richardson is a past Clyde Cordell Memorial winner, and he was back in action last time out.
When Orland Raceway isn't running, which will again be the case this weekend, we occasionally see some of their top competitors in Hayfork. Last time out, 2017 Orland champion Jeremy Langenderfer and current championship contender Keith Ross both gave a good accounting of themselves. Ross finished third and got a piece of the increased purse money offered that night. Regular competitors such as Mikey Ruth, Isaac Kephart, Josh Michaels, Carl Roberts and Tony Quinones could be there this week, and you never know who may show up to race.
They seem to come from everywhere to take on a local Hayfork stars in the Mini Stock division. Last race, we saw 14 drivers take the green flag in the Main Event, which was won by Orland champion Tom Davis. Local stars Joey Young, William Young and Larry Richardson have been winners this this year, and Orland Mini Truck star William Fogle also has a win in Hayfork. The fact is, the competition level is getting higher, and other stars of the 4 Cylinder class to watch for this week include Ricky Berry, Ian Thulin, Freddie Leeper and Jack Turner.
Hayfork continues to work to establish its own B Modified division. Tressen Smith, Patrick Solometo and Joe Short count themselves as the first three in the area to field cars in this class, and last time they were joined by Yreka IMCA Sport Modified star Ryder Boswell. Track officials are hoping to firmly establish this class as a regular attraction.
When it comes to regular attractions in Hayfork that thrill the crowd, it's hard to beat the wild and crazy Enduro division. All makes and models of vehicles line up on the front straightaway after the track has been completely drenched with water. The green flag waves and they take off from a standing start. The big star so far is Bryan Gummerus, who won again last time out. However, there are many racers gunning for him this week. Some of stars of this class include recent winner Jeff Drake, JD Hudman, William Young, Rae Lynn, Ralph Thurman and Mike Wine Sr.
It's going to be another fun night of racing at the Trinity County Fairgrounds. Adults 18+ are $10, Seniors 62+ and Veterans are $8, Students 17 and under are $5 and Children 5 and under are free. For further information, go to the Mountain Valley Raceway Facebook page.
Pit Stops
The final race of July at Southern Oregon Speedway was Willamette Valley Bank night, and it proved to be a big success for the speedway. One of the biggest crowds of the year was in attendance on a beautiful evening for a race that would feature the Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, IMCA Sport Modifieds and the Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars. Over 80 competitors were on hand across the five divisions.
Perhaps it was the challenge of ending the three-race win streak of point leader Mike Wheeler, but whatever the case, Cottage Grove Speedway star Kinzer Cox made a surprise appearance. This helped grow the car count to 15 competitors for the show as Tanner Holmes was in town, fresh off of his 500 Open Kart win in Yreka a night earlier. Holmes and Cox picked up heat race wins to start their evening, and David Hibbard looked better than he has for much of the year in winning both his heat race and the Scramble. These three drivers looked like good prospects to beat Wheeler.
Though he had the pole position, Hibbard quickly surrendered first to Cox. Holmes was giving Hibbard all kinds of pressure for second before getting the position. Unfortunately for the reigning champion Hibbard, he pitted late with more mechanical issues as Wheeler began another charge to the front of the pack. It seems like no matter what the track conditions, Wheeler and his team are very prepared. Wheeler made the move around Holmes and was quickly on the rear nerf of Cox with two laps to go.
Traffic impeded the progress of Wheeler just enough coming out of Turn 2, and though he made a last turn bid to get by, Cox would hold off Wheeler for the victory. Still, Wheeler is showing that he is the real deal as he increased his point advantage that much more. Cox, meanwhile, has thrown his hat into the ring as a serious player in the $2,000 to win Ironhead Nationals event that is set to happen on August 10th.
While Holmes was earning a respectable third place finish, it was 2016 champion Jake Wheeler making a surprising start and finishing fourth. Newcomer Ron Osborne was set to drive the #42 Sprinter, but the team decided prior to the Main Event to let Jake put the car through its shakedown run. The nephew of the current point leader is also a championship contender in the Winged 360 Sprint Car division at Cottage Grove Speedway. Should Jake get an opportunity to drive the car again on August 10th, you would have to consider him a threat to win.
Bailey Hibbard had a respectable showing in fifth ahead of Charlie Thompson and top rookie Anissa Curtice. Unfortunately for Bailey, he is trailing Wheeler by more points than you can earn in one race night. Though there are a few races left to go, the younger Hibbard will need a break to go his way to really have a shot at Wheeler.
Zach Fettinger isn't just content to lead the IMCA Modified point race. After four events, he was still searching for his first win of the season. Fettinger didn't just come to win the championship, he came to win some races. One of his biggest challengers in the championship battle is three-time reigning title winner Albert Gill, and Gill had a terrible night with motor issues causing him to load up before the Main Event.
The point average makes a difference in IMCA. Though the high point earners may battle for heat race wins, the average they hold onto for the Main Event lineup will still put them deep in the pack at the start. Fettinger was working on a sweep with wins in the Dash and heat race, and he started back in the fifth row for the feature. Undaunted by the challenge, Fettinger struck to fourth within two laps.
Running at the front of the pack was second-generation star Dave Duste Jr. Duste has won several Main Events through the years, but he only recently pulled his car out of the garage and had some good finishes on the Speedweek Tour this year. The #73 car seemed to be running well, and he led the Main Event or 12 laps before being overtaken by Fettinger. Despite that, Duste followed Fettinger on the bottom groove not too far behind. While Fettinger become the fifth different winner of the year, Duste was earning a respectable second.
Justin Foux would seem to be somebody to watch as the potential next new winner in the class. He's had his moments in the IMCA Sport Modified division in recent years, and he is already looking like a seasoned veteran in the IMCA Modified class. He managed to hold off 2017 champion Jessie Bailey to get another good finish in third, which keeps him in the lead in the rookie battle. Bailey had a good heat race with Jeremy Richey before getting the win. Duane Orsburn ran second in the early stages of the race, but he would end up spinning. He made it back up to sixth, but he was unable to overtake fifth place finisher Andy Freeman.
Back in seventh was second-generation racer Ray Kniffen Jr. Kniffen is breaking in a new car this year, but he's been finding it a bit challenging getting the set up just right. Things seemed to go a little bit better on this occasion, though he was hoping for better results. There's always next time. All in all, it was a smoothly run race for the IMCA Modifieds once again.
The two toughest drivers to beat in Late Model competition these days are point leader Trent Elliott and Darren Coffell. In fact, this duo may be the favorites to win the $4,000 Cottonwood Classic on August 24th. Coffell spotted Elliot a week as he missed the season opener, but he is running second in the standings. Unfortunately for him, Elliott is showing no signs of slowing down. To highlight that, Elliott scored a clean sweep of his heat race, Trophy Dash and the Main Event.
Elliott bolted ahead at the waving of the green flag with heat race winner Coffell holding second throughout the feature race. Coming off of an impressive third place feature finish last time out, 2013 Pro Stock champion Dave Everson did it again with another podium effort. He's making a serious claim for third in the standings, and he was never really challenged in the Main Event. Could Everson be the driver to beat the dynamic duo of Elliott and Coffell? Mark Wauge had hopes of being that driver, but he blew a motor in hot laps to end his evening way too soon. The last two races have not been kind to the seven-time IMCA Modified champion.
The battle turned out to be for fourth, where 2016 champion Bob Dees, 2017 title winner Nathan Augustine and Late Model Lites point leader Greg Arnold took their turns in the position. Arnold finally grabbed the spot and had hopes of possibly reeling in Everson for third, but a broken axle sent him to the pits. Augustine and Dees continued their battle with Augustine prevailing at the checkered flag. It was a good night for both drivers as they had good finishes and drove their cars up on the trailers.
It looks like Tony Bartell is selling his Late Model. The past IMCA Sport Modified and Late Model Lites competitor has not had a good go of it so far. Past Pro Stock and Modified champion Dustin Knight put his trademark number #77 on the Bartell car and gave it a go. Though he looked fast at times, his night ended early in the Main Event to put him last. Knight has his own new car, which he hopes to debut very soon. Coming off of his Top 5 finish a race earlier, Eric Massey held off Dave Foote and Miles Deubert to finish sixth. It wasn't really the kind of night that Massey was hoping for as he didn't quite get up to the speed he had at the previous race.
If there's a place where the high point average can really hurt you, it's in the IMCA Sport Modified ranks, where the car count has been up this season. Some would say that two-time champion and current point leader Jorddon Braaten is the fastest driver in the field, but despite winning his heat race, all he got out of that effort was retention of his point average, which put him back in the sixth row for the Main Event. Braxton Possinger hasn't had a lot of luck in his visits this year, earning him a start much further up in the pack.
Possinger had the lead from the moment the green flag waved. The second-generation leadfoot did an exemplary job of leading the pack through eight different restarts during the race. The battle took place behind him between the hard-charging Braaten, Isaac Sanders and Matt Sanders. They swapped the second position a few times during second half of the race, and it was still very close at the checkered flag. Isaac Sanders prevailed over Braaten and Matt Sanders. This meant very little change would happen in the standings as Braaten continues to lead Matt Sanders and Isaac Sanders.
Branden Wilson has not had the kind of season he would like to have so far. After being the top rookie and a feature winner last season, Wilson has seen several things go wrong during the course of the year. However, he perseveres, and he enjoyed some good racing with two-time champion Mike Medel and Joby Shields last time out. Shields is another driver who hasn't had much luck this year, but he recently had a Top 5 finish down in Yreka. Coming to town with a bit more confidence, Shields managed his best finish of the year at his home track in sixth, followed closely by Medel. Wilson, meanwhile, finished fifth. Branden continues to take a look at a possible move up to Sprint Cars in the future.
it seems like all the glory in the Southern Oregon Dwarf Cars this season has being hoarded among three-time reigning champion Josh King, two-time champion Brock Peters and Camden Robustelli. It's not a surprise to see these three drivers at the front of the pack. When they get there, you know you're going to be on the edge of your seat as they slice and dice for the lead. In this case, Peters was leading in the later stages before a mechanical issue took him out of contention.
King, who won his heat race and the A Dash, led the way throughout the first half of the race with Robustelli in tow. When Peters headed pitside, King was there to take the lead and score the victory. He's had quite an impressive season so far with wins at several different venues. Though we have yet to see a Southern Oregon Dwarf Car point sheet, it would not be a surprise to see King's name listed high on that list. Robustelli had his hands full trying to hold on to the second position, but he managed to keep hard charger Chad Cardoza behind him at the checkered flag.
Cody Peters, meanwhile, isn't chasing points as seriously this year, but the past Dwarf Car Nationals winner is always a threat when he's on the track. Peters would battle another longtime Southern Oregon Dwarf Car hard charger, Ryan Smith, before finishing fourth ahead of Smith. It was a couple of old veterans, Steve Walker and Fred Hay, battling with young up-and-comer Ashleigh Strain for the sixth position. They finished in order, but it was certainly a good race all around.
Kalvin Morton had his sights set on a Top 5 finish. He was looking good throughout the first half of the race before he too had to pit with mechanical issues. This has certainly not been the kind of year that the perennial front runner had hoped for. Mason Lewman looked good in holding off Morton for the B Dash win, but he didn't have the kind of Main Event he was hoping for either. He still managed to salvage a ninth place finish ahead of Michael Johnson. The Dwarf Cars impressed with a strong 25 car turnout on Saturday, and a great field of competitors made this a very entertaining show.
At the little track on Friday night, the fans were treated to a very exciting program of Karts, Flat Track Bikes and Trikes. There were 42 competitors spread across nine classifications of divisions.
What's interesting about the Kart division is watching as younger drivers get more confidence and begin to race harder. The evolution of young Caleb Ranney from a kid scared to get in his Kart last year to a hard-charger willing to put his Kart up on the outside or the inside has been something to see. Ranney was coming into the night off of back-to-back second place Main Event finishes but he saved his best for this occasion as he won both his heat races and the Main Event, snapping a three-race win streak for Jayme DeBenedetti.
DeBenedetti continues to hold command in the point battle, and her effort for the night didn't really hurt that. Jayme had a third place finish behind another season best effort for Isaac Grimes, who currently trails her in the point race. Both drivers also had second and third place finishes in their two heat races, meaning there isn't much of a change happening in the standings. Ranney, meanwhile, has his sights set on the third point position, which is currently held by Talia Colley. All six of the young Beginners Box Stock competitors who ran during the course of the night did a good job.
Keaton Augustine was hoping for more people to come race in the Box Stocks, but the only driver showing up to do battle with him was Albert Gill Jr. Gill did a good job for the most part and took a checkered flag in second, but Augustine swept all of the events once again as he appears to be headed for a successful title defense. Word from the Augustine camp is that young Keaton could be moving up to the Junior Street Stock division at Madras Speedway next year. This particular program allows the younger kids to race with each other and gain experience in bigger cars. The closest thing other than that in Oregon appears to be the Junior Stinger class happening at Coos Bay Speedway.
Trevor Grimes appears to be headed for his second 250 Kart championship, but you won't catch him taking it for granted. In fact, Grimes knows that if he wants to win on any given week he will have to earn it. Young Vinny DeBenedetti did a great job presenting challenges to Grimes all night. The reigning champion led the first half of the Main Event and led several laps of both heat races. Unfortunately for DeBenedetti, he was overtaken by Grimes in each event and would settle for second. Cadyn Smith, meanwhile, earned his fourth-straight podium finish. The two-time Beginners Box Stock champion has been doing a good job this year.
It can be a bit scary and yet quite exciting watching the Flat Track Bikes. As the riders have gotten used to the one-eighth mile oval, they are racing harder and not holding anything back. You watch them slice and dice for position on the outside and the inside, and one of the riders who seems to be racing the hardest is Trevor Taylor. Taylor was on a course for another sweep of all of the Main Events in which he'd entered.
It started with Taylor winning his fourth-straight 250cc Bike race ahead of Mya Maffei and Theo Lount. He took advantage of the misfortune of teammate Maffei, who saw her bike fail to start on a restart four laps into the 450cc Bike race. Taylor would gladly pick up the winner's hardware in that race, followed Brooke Lozano and Alex Hanakahi.
The night wasn't necessarily very kind to some of the riders. Early in the evening, Big Trike competitor Mike Burson Sr crashed on the back straightaway. He appeared to hurt his leg, but he was still attempting to walk it off. His night was over. Another rider taking a tumble over his handlebars on the frontstretch was Shawn Vernier. Hanakahi crashed entering Turn 1 early in the 450cc Bike race, but he still recovered for a third place finish
For the Open Bike class, which like the 250 Karts races for a purse, Hanakahi led the way as Taylor quickly swooped in for second. As the two were fighting for the lead entering Turn 3, they might have touched wheels. In any case, Taylor crashed and was down on the ground for several minutes as the EMT tended to him. He did take a trip to the hospital, and the report was bruised ribs and a concussion.
At that point, the five riders left from the eight that started huddled and decided to finish the show for the fans. Hanakahi continued to lead the way ahead of Maffei and Lozano. Theo Lount and Zach Burkdoll completed the finishing order. The one thing you can say about these riders is they are brave and tough competitors.
The Small Bike class had four riders. Though Jeremiah Pruitt disrupted Brody Taylor's winning ways in their heat race, Taylor resumed command for his third feature win in the class. Pruitt ran a good race in second. Seven year old Jax Taylor finished third, but he's no longer the youngest rider in the field. Aiden Egan is six years old, and he took a checkered flag to complete the finishing order.
The Trikes completed the program, and Ben Herbert brought vehicles to compete in both the Big and Small classes. In the Small Trike class, Herbert had quite a battle going throughout the race with Daniel Ward as they swapped the lead. Herbert made his winning move on the last lap to grab the winner's trophy, followed by Ward and previous feature winner MiKayla Burson.
Garrett Stookey has certainly looked impressive as one of the winners in Trike competition this year. Stookey led the Big Trike race for nine laps, but Herbert overtook him on the 10th circuit and brought it home to his second win on the night. Sam Desimone made his first visit and finished third. It was quite entertaining to watch the way Stookey and Herbert were throwing their Trikes into the turns and racing as hard as they did.
A night at Little Southern Oregon Speedway is certainly taking on a whole new dimension with the addition of the other classes. If you haven't checked out a show there recently, it's worth the visit to see all the excitement. There are two events left at the little track, August 9th and August 16th.
The Siskiyou Golden Fair always brings racing to a halt in Yreka at the end of July. It's about a month long break before they get to race again. Following the show last Saturday night, crews worked for several hours tearing things down. Promoter Kevin Barba assures everybody that everything will be back and ready to go when the Iron Giant Street Stock Series, IMCA Sport Modifieds and Mini Stocks return to the track on August 17th.
In the meantime, there was still the matter of O'Reilly Auto Parts Logger's Night at the speedway last Saturday. The local count has been rising in the IMCA Sport Modifieds, which is certainly encouraging as these drivers put on a good show for the fans. Merissa Henson has had people talking lately with her two feature wins, and she gave them another show when she won the Trophy Dash earlier in the evening. She would finish second in the feature in the Donny Bottoms owned car. However, the star of the Main Event turned out to be Ethan Killingsworth.
Killingsworth has had his moments this year, including an early-season victory and a pair of seconds and a pair of thirds. A technical disqualification at the Speedweek race that put him last in the finishing order erased the point lead that he had been building. When he needed it the most, however, Ethan charged to his second win of the season on this occasion. This win will keep him right in the thick of the battle with Colt Boswell and Ryder Boswell, who unfortunately didn't have a very good finish on this occasion.
It was good to see reigning champion Trevor Tiffee back in action. Trevor put his new car through its paces in a visit to Reno Fernley Raceway a few weeks back. On this occasion, the #19 car seemed to be running strong, and he finished a respectable third in the feature, followed by Colt Boswell and Dennis Jorgensen. The IMCA Sport Modifieds were certainly a highlight of the show, but the Calculated Comfort Outlaw Pro Stocks also had people talking as well.
Pro Stock point leader Scott Lenz has been the dominant factor on the tour this year. Lenz had won all seven of the races he started prior to this one, but he didn't have a very good Main Event on this occasion. 2016 title winner Steve Borror gave indication that this would be his night when he won the Trophy Dash. Borror looked very impressive in Medford the week before in nearly defeating Lenz for the victory that night.
This time, Bryan Hammond and Matt Harlow were the ones in contention with Borror. Harlow suffered a nightmare of an evening at Medford the week before when a bad heat race put him into the B Main, and problems prior to the green flag sent him to the pits. Matt rebounded this time by driving the Maurie Skaggs owned car to a season-best third place effort. Also turning in a season-best performance was Hammond, who looked good in placing second on this occasion. People pretty much knew the win was going to happen for Borror if he kept at it. Yreka was also the site of his previous win last season.
The Scott Bennett #15 car was back with past Modified champion Jeff Hudson behind the wheel and finishing fourth ahead of championship contender Scott Flowers. Bennett had Jeffrey Hudson behind the wheel in Medford the week before, and the younger Hudson had a Top 5 finish that night as well. Marysville and Orland champion Jerry Bartlett made a rare appearance and brought it home in sixth ahead of Rick Lukens. The field also included Mini Stock star Darek Alford, though his race ended early for a 14th place finish.
Alford is hoping to make a run at the Mini Stock championship, and last report was that he was trailing Zak McMurry in that endeavor heading into the latest race. McMurry had one of his worst showings of the year as he ended up seventh. Past division champion Terry Kendrick can relate to the bad luck. The Fourth of July weekend saw him have two nights he'd rather forget. However, he picked up his third win of the season on this occasion. It might be a little late to impact a potential championship run for him, but you never know.
Darek Alfred may have gained a little bit of ground on McMurry with his second place feature run ahead of Dan Borror. Borror, who is a past feature winner in Yreka, is also the father of Steve Borror. The two Borror's shared a little glory as both won their respective Trophy Dashes earlier in the evening. Two-time champion Mike Whitaker was able to keep his point effort going with a fourth place finish behind the wheel of teammate Marilyn Yawnick's car. It's still too soon to tell where the point battle might go.
Coos Bay Speedway had their Third Annual Tidal Wave Weekend, but because both the Medford and Willamette tracks were running their Late Model classes, they didn't get too much visitation for the America's Mattress Super Late Model event. The race even paid $1,200 to win on each night. The two big visitors in the field were Cottage Grove regular Kyle Frick and Rob Mayea. As it turns out, Frick would win on Saturday and Mayea would win the 50 lapper on Sunday, enabling each to pocket $1,200 for their wins.
Even second place was paying a nice sum at $500. Mayea got that money on Saturday, but championship contender Preston Luckman made it to the pay window in second on Sunday. Luckman also had a third place finish on Saturday ahead of championship rival Brody Montgomery. As Montgomery didn't do as well on Sunday, Luckman managed to increase his lead in the standings just a little bit. The Saturday show attracted 13 competitors.
Braden Fugate picked up his seventh Sportsman Late Model win of the season. Because of the low turnout, however, he doesn't have a huge advantage over Mike Taylor, who interrupted the Fugate win streak with a victory of his own on Sunday. The championship battle is still close, but Taylor may need some luck, coupled with more of a car count, to overtake Fugate.
The Mini Outlaw and Street Stock point battles aren't likely to be affected at all. Steve Dubisar has won most of the Street Stock races and is well on his way to the title, while Sam Talon has won all seven Mini Outlaw races. Mini Outlaw count was so low on Sunday that a race wasn't even held. Talon is currently second in the Street Stock point battle as he is a rookie in that class.
The Hornet division continues to be a nip-and-tuck battle as car count actually hit its lowest point of the season. Generally, the numbers are well into the teens for the class. Reigning champion Tyler Tullos and third-ranked Street Stock racer Peyton Reigard won the Main Events, and Tullos also had a second place finish. With a pair of Top 5 finishes, including a third place effort on Sunday, Ray Marshall leads four-time winner Hannah Robison in a close battle. It's anybody's guess who might win this, though Robison could be tough to beat if she continues to race at every event.
Orland Raceway enjoyed one of its best nights of the year. It was Ladies Night, meaning the ladies got in free. There was also a Powder Puff race, which you don't see too often these days at many tracks. In this case, they ran Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Mini Trucks together. About a dozen competitors ran the race, Shelly Martin drove the Steve Martin owned #4 car to the win.
We can tell you that a good crowd turned out for the show. In fact, this may have been the best attended race of the year, with the exception of the Fair race. With some 20 Pure Stock drivers in the field, it's clear who had the biggest car count. Wes Smock may have Phil Spencer and Keith Ross breathing a sigh of relief that he didn't start at the beginning of the season. Since debuting a few weeks in, Smock has been rather dominant. The past Mini Stock champion had a good battle with 2017 title winner Jeremy Langenderfer before prevailing at the checkered flag. The Pure Stock class was certainly the show of the night.
Thomas Pavlik enjoyed his best effort of the year in third, and by coming from the back of the pack to a fourth place finish, reigning Mini Truck champion Ross gained some valuable points on Spencer, who didn't finish this race. The battle will continue in this class on August 3rd.
We've talked about the possibility that an IMCA sanctioning could be pursued for the Sport Modified division at Orland. The track ran a pair of unsanctioned events, but the second one on Saturday only had three cars. Could it be that the lack of a sanctioning hurts the potential to draw cars here? They're definitely sharing the base of cars that compete at Marysville and Chico, both sanctioned tracks. IMCA runs a championship at four races minimum, and it's likely that Orland could find a window to have four races for this class with a sanctioning, should Promoter Rich Hood choose to do it. What will happen is anybody's guess, but it was local standout Jake Van Tol getting the win this time.
You're not likely to get more action and excitement in a division than what you see in the Mini Trucks at Orland. These drivers race hard, and occasionally there's a bit of contact. 2016 title winner Dan Webster won another race, but because he's missed races, he's not leading the standings. He's still very much in the hunt, but Kalvin Kvalvik stretched his lead with a second place finish on this occasion. The trucks at Orland is the longest running program for this class in California, and only Placerville Speedway offers a similar division.
The blown motor suffered at the season opener is likely the only thing holding past champion Tony Richards back in the Wingless Spec Sprints. He's won several races and at times has been very dominant. He won yet again on Saturday night, but with point leader Denny McNary finishing third behind a season-best second for Cort Marchuk, not much change will happen in the point battle. If all Richards can do is gain two or four points at a time, McNary may be able to run out the clock and win the championship by the time the season concludes.
