$4,000 To Win Late Model Race
At Southern Oregon Speedway Saturday Night
White City, Oregon...On the heels of the successful Hall of Fame night, Promoter Mike McCann has another big event set for Southern Oregon Speedway this Saturday night. It's the $4,000 to win Cottonwood Classic Late Model race. Some of the best drivers on the West Coast are anticipated for this show. Also competing will be the Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars, Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks, JOAT Labs Hornets, Valley Store All Late Model Lites and OTRO Hardtops.
McCann has been committed to establishing a stronger Late Model presence at Southern Oregon Speedway, and this is the best year yet in that endeavor. The purse money offered for Saturday's big show is the biggest for any Dirt Late Model event on the West Coast. Not only will the drivers receive a nice $4,000 first prize, but second place pays $2,000 and third is worth $1,000.
Hoping to stake a claim on the big prize will be point leader Trent Elliott. Elliott leads the standings on the strength of three feature wins and a second place finish last week. To get second, he had to come from the back of the pack twice after a bad heat effort put him at the back for the start. When he got to third, there was contact between he and Mark Wauge, resulting in a Wauge spin. Elliott had to restart at the back as well, and he managed to get back to a second place finish.
The driver leading the way from start to finish last week was Darren Coffell. After his second win of the season, he is feeling pretty good about his chances of winning the big money. Last week saw a pair of competitors from the Willamette track, which included second ranked Doug Elkins, who finished fourth. Elkins is competing with Joey Tanner for the Willamette title, and Tanner leads after winning the championship the year before. Tanner is anticipated this Saturday as well.
The bigger prize money is getting the attention of some California racers, which includes two-time IMCA Modified Speedweek champion Kellen Chadwick. Chadwick will be piloting the Chris Biggs car this Saturday night. Car owner Paul Guglielmoni will reportedly be bringing three cars for this occasion. Guglielmoni is a two-time Petaluma Speedway champion, and the team had their cars at Placerville last week with Clark Guglielmoni getting the win there. The other driver is Bobby Hogge IV, who won a Late Model race at Southern Oregon Speedway earlier this year. Hogge has won some of the biggest races at Southern Oregon Speedway and on the West Coast throughout his decorated career and may be this driver to beat on Saturday.
Two local standouts hoping to bring the prize money home are Mark Wauge and Dave Everson. Seven-time IMCA Modified champion Wauge overcame recent motor woes by winning his heat race last week and earning his third third place finish of the season. Likewise, 2013 Pro Stock champion Everson has earned a pair of third place finishes this season and currently ranks second in the standings. Other regulars to watch for this week include Dave Foote, Miles Deubert, reigning champion John Dees, Bob Dees, Eric Massey and past Dirt Modified and Pro Stock champion Dustin Knight.
The Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars will also be bringing the speed Saturday night. On the strength of his three victories, Mike Wheeler holds a good lead in the standings, but he's not about to get too comfortable with three point races remaining. Wheeler saw his win streak snapped last time out by Kinzer Cox, but he finished a close second. Trailing him in the standings is Bailey Hibbard, who only has a four point advantage over Enrique Jaime and past champion Charlie Thompson in a closer race for second. All three of these drivers are still looking for their first win of the season.
Likewise, reigning champion David Hibbard is still looking for his first win this year, and other stars to watch for include 2016 champion Jake Wheeler, top rookie Anissa Curtice, Johnny Burke, TJ Winningham and David Marble. We may also see an appearance by Tanner Holmes, who recently won the Week of Speed Series championship.
David Steele has hit his stride, and that's bad news for the Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock competitors. The reigning champion and current point leader grabbed his fifth feature win of the season last week, and he did it while also picking up his third-straight clean sweep. This has put the pressure on second ranked Ashtin Hedges to get another win. Hedges managed to finish second last week ahead of heat race winner Steve Goetz, who was enjoying his best night of the season. Other stars to watch for this week include 2017 champion Kristopher Mix, Hunter Magnan, top rookie Dylan Irving and Mike McLeod.
Following his third feature win of the season, Greg Arnold managed to increase his Valley Store All Late Model Lites point lead just a little bit more over reigning champion Charlie Eaton. Like Arnold, both Eaton and Ross Payant are feature winners this year. They may be leading the charge to get the victory this week, but others to watch for include recent Trophy Dash winner Krista Hadley, Eric Aos, Dusty Aos and the division's all time feature win leader, Terry Hadley.
Dylan Sauer had an impressive clean sweep performance last week, capped by his fifth JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event win. This enabled him to double his point lead over 2016 champion Tim Hedges. Hedges will be hoping to get his third win of the season to make up some ground, but his wife, Jenna Hedges, is also hoping to take it up a notch after finishing a season high second last week. Other stars to watch for this week include top rookie Quinton Tritchler, Shawn Nelson, Chris Boynton, Ryan Nelson and newcomer Zachary Tener.
Rounding out an exciting program will be the OTRO Hardtops. These classic old Ford and Chevy Coup and Sedan race cars from the 1940s always put on an entertaining show. Wins so far had been recorded by Mark Minter, Dean Cast and Dan Fouts. Minter is the only driver in the group to win a race in each of the past four seasons. Other racers to watch for this week include Bill Trotter, Jay Smith, Eric DeRamus and Bryan Weberg II.
For the big Late Model show alone, this event will be worth checking out. The other divisions make it that much more exciting. The gates will open at 5pm with the first race at 7pm. General Admission Adult tickets 13+ are $15, Seniors 62+, Veterans and Juniors 7 to 12 are $10. Children 6 and under are free. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.
Bailey Scores Second IMCA Modified Win
At Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon...August 17...Jesse Bailey scored an impressive win in the 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. This was his second win of the season, which enabled him to cut into the lead of Zach Fettinger, who didn't finish. Bailey made an impressive outside groove effort that gained him the lead late in the race. The IMCA Modifieds were competing as part of Hall Of Fame Night at the speedway. Markey James, Jim Walker Sr, Jay McCleary, Sam Dykes, Dave Shinn and Freddy Higginbotham were all inducted into the Southern Oregon Racing Hall of Fame during intermission.
The battle between Bailey and Fettinger for the championship is certainly getting interesting. Bailey picked up the four lap Trophy Dash win earlier in the evening as Fettinger spun going for the lead on the last lap. Nick Trenchard, Fettinger and picked up eight lap heat race wins. There were 19 competitors on hand for this race.
For the Main Event, Andy Freeman had the outside front row starting position and set the early pace ahead of Dave Duste Jr and Jeremy Richey. A yellow flag waved for Trenchard in Turn 1. Freeman continued to lead Duste and Richey on the restart and they ran that way for the next several laps and through a lap six yellow flag. Richey finally slipped past Duste for second on lap nine and began to pressure Freeman for the lead. Albert Gill made a front stretch pass on Duste to take over second on lap 12. With 10 laps to go, Bailey wasn't even in the Top 5, but he began working the extreme outside groove. A lap 20 yellow flag for Ray Kniffen Jr bunched the field. On the restart, Bailey was running the outside groove in a bid to move into second, and a tangle in Turn 2 between Gill and Fettinger forced another yellow flag. Freeman continued to lead Bailey and Richey on the restart. Bailey continued to run the outside line and made a high pass in Turn 4 of the 24th lap to finally get the lead from Freeman. Bailey went on to the impressive victory as Freeman settled for second ahead of Richey. Trenchard managed to come from the back of the pack to finish fourth, followed by Paul Rea, Jeremy Ohlde, Jimmy Lipke, Ryan Baker, Duane Orsburn and Steve Borror.
The next race for the IMCA Modifieds will be the Third Annual R Charles Snyder Salute on Labor Day weekend. The big September 1st Main Event will pay $5,000 to the winner. The IMCA Sport Modifieds will run in support with $2,000 going to the winner of their feature that night. For further information, go to www.southernoregonspeedway.com.

Braaten Has Big Night In IMCA Sport Modifieds
At Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon... August 17..Jorddon Braaten won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. Braaten's third win of the season capped a clean sweep of Main Event, Trophy Dash and heat race for the two-time champion. It also enabled him to increase his point. The IMCA Sport Modifieds were competing as part of Hall Of Fame Night at the speedway. Markey James, Jim Walker Sr, Jay McCleary, Sam Dykes, Dave Shinn and Freddy Higginbotham were all inducted into the Southern Oregon Racing Hall of Fame during intermission.
Braaten kicked things off by winning the four lap Trophy Dash and his eight lap heat race. Isaac Sanders won his heat, and Mike Medel outran Rich McCoy to score a thrilling heat race win of his own. There were 20 competitors on hand for the show.
A high point average put Braaten back in 10th starting for the feature as outside front row starter Austin Petray raced into the early lead ahead of Jantzen Knips and Medel. Zach Nelson spun for a lap three yellow flag. Knips took the lead from Petray on the restart as Braaten settled into third. A high pass in Turn 2 of the fifth lap gained Braaten second from Petray, and Nelson spun in Turn 2 for a yellow flag to end his race. Braaten begin to pressure Knips for the lead on the restart and used a high pass in Turn 4 to gain the lead before the lap was completed. Braaten had about a straightaway advantage over Knips by lap 10, and Knips made a quick exit from the race. Braxton Possinger began a battle with Petray for the second position. A lengthy green flag run was punctuated by a final yellow flag on lap 17 for newcomer Bartley Foster. Braaten continued to lead Petray and Possinger on the restart, and the lead three remained unchained all the way to the checkered flag. Isaac Sanders finished fourth, followed by Branden Wilson, Medel, McCoy, Brian Knorr, Doug Wilcox and Steve Lysinger.
The IMCA Sport Modifieds will be competing at the Third Annual R Charles Snyder Salute on Labor Day weekend. The September 1st portion of the program will feature a $2,000 to win race for the class, while the IMCA Modifieds compete for $5,000 to win. Coffell Unstoppable In Late Model Win
At Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon...August 17...Darren Coffell won the 25 lap Late Model Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. This was the second win of the season for Coffell as he tunes up for the $4,000 to win Cottonwood Classic this Saturday night. He would lead all the way from the start, leaving plenty of excitement behind him. The win paid $1,000 with additional sponsorship coming from the Northwest Trucking Academy. The Late Models were competing as part of Hall Of Fame Night at the speedway. Markey James, Jim Walker Sr, Jay McCleary, Sam Dykes, Dave Shinn and Freddy Higginbotham were all inducted into the Southern Oregon Racing Hall of Fame during intermission.
There were 13 Late Models competing on this occasion, and point leader Trent Elliott got things started by outrunning Miles Deubert to win the four lap Trophy Dash. However, Elliott had a terrible heat race, which would put him last on the Main Event grid. Eight lap heat race wins went to Coffell and Mark Wauge, putting the two on the front row for the feature race.
Coffell raced into the Main Event lead at the start ahead of Wauge and Willamette Speedway star Doug Elkins. Elliott managed to make it to fifth on lap five before a yellow flag waved for Chris Biggs and Cliff Massey in Turn 2. Coffell led Wauge on the restart, and Elliott was fourth behind Elkins. Cliff Massey again brought out a yellow flag on lap 10. Elliott moved into third on the restart behind Coffell and Wauge. As they were working what would have been lap 12, Elliott tried to get a run on Wauge entering Turn 1, but this resulted in contact that sent Wauge spinning. Track officials put Elliott to the rear of the pack for his part in the incident. Coffell led Elkins and BJ Donofrio on the restart, but Late Model Lites point leader Greg Arnold took third when Donofrio spun in Turn 4 a lap later. Coffell led Elkins and Arnold on this restart and a lap 16 restart as well. Dave Everson was running in the fourth position, but a high pass in Turn 1 of the 19th lap by Wauge gained him the position. Wauge went by Arnold on the outside down the front stretch on lap 21, and a yellow flag waved for Miles Deubert in Turn 1 moments later. Coffell continued to lead the restart, and Elliott made an outside pass to take over the second spot with Wauge in third. In the waning laps, Elliott closed in a little bit on Coffell, but Coffell still brought it home to the victory. Wauge settled for third, followed by Elkins, Everson, John Dees, Donofrio, Arnold, Dave Foote and Cliff Massey.
This Saturday night is the $4,000 to win Cottonwood Classic for the Late Models, and a big field is anticipated for this event. Also in action will be the Kendall Oil Winged Sprint Cars, Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks, JOAT Labs Hornets, Valley Store All Late Model Lites and OTRO Hardtops. Steele Unstoppable In Mini Stocks
At Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon...August 17...David Steele won the 20 lap Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stock Main Event Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. The reigning champion Steele also holds the current point lead, and this was his fifth win of the season. It also marked his third-straight clean sweep of Main Event, Trophy Dash and heat race. Ashtin Hedges continues to try to hold on in the championship chase as he scored another second place finish. The Mini Stocks were competing as part of Hall Of Fame Night at the speedway. Markey James, Jim Walker Sr, Jay McCleary, Sam Dykes, Dave Shinn and Freddy Higginbotham were all inducted into the Southern Oregon Racing Hall of Fame during intermission.
Steele grabbed the four lap Trophy Dash win and followed it up by winning his eight lap heat race. The other heat race win went to Steve Goetz. Garrett Fredrickson had motor problems while running his heat race to end his night early.
Steele had the front row for the Main Event and charged into the lead at the start ahead of Hedges and Goetz. Michael McLeod was an early fourth, but he spun in Turn 4 for a lap seven yellow flag, handing the position to Hunter Magnan. As Steele continued to lead Hedges and Goetz on the restart, Kristopher Mix made a low pass in Turn 4 to take fourth from Magnan. The battle for fourth was the closest on the track. Steele continued to make fast and consistent laps on his way to the impressive win. Hedges looked good in second as Goetz, Mix, Magnan, Dylan Irving, McLeod and Brandyn Wonsyld completed the finishing order.
The Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks will be back this Saturday night as part of the $4,000 to win Cottonwood Classic Late Model program. Also competing this week will be the Kendell Oil Winged Sprint Cars, Valley Store All Late Model Lites, JOAT Labs Hornets and OTRO Hardtop. Sauer Sweeps JOAT Labs Hornets Action
At Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon...August 17...Dylan Sauer scored an impressive 20 lap JOAT Labs Hornets Main Event win Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway. This was his division leading fifth win of the season and also a clean sweep of Main Event, Trophy Dash and heat race. As a result, he doubled his point lead over his closest rival, Tim Hedges. The Hornets were competing as part of Hall Of Fame Night at the speedway. Markey James, Jim Walker Sr, Jay McCleary, Sam Dykes, Dave Shinn and Freddy Higginbotham were all inducted into the Southern Oregon Racing Hall of Fame during intermission.
Sauer shot out of the gate fast with a four lap Trophy Dash win ahead of Tim Hedges. He folliwed that up with an eight lap heat race win, while rookie Quinton Tritchler was the other heat race winner. Newcomer Cole Gillespie was a Main Event scratch.
When the green flag waved in the Main Event, Sauer jumped into the early lead ahead of Tim Hedges, but Quinton Tritchler made a Turn 4 pass to take second on lap two. Hedges had a flat tire and stalled in Turn 2 for a lap three yellow flag. Sauer continued to lead Tritchler and Ryan Nelson on the restart, but Jenna Hedges gained third on lap five. A yellow flag waved on lap eight for Shawn Nelson in Turn 2. Sauer continued to lead Tritchler and Jenna Hedges on the restart. The final yellow flag flew for Ryan Nelson on the front stretch on lap 15. As Sauer led the restart, Jenna Hedges made an inside pass in Turn 3 to take second from Tritchler before the lap was completed. She set her sights on Sauer and closed in on him just a little bit. However, Sauer stayed smooth and picked up a big victory ahead of Jenna Hedges, Chris Boynton, Tritchler, Zachary Tener, Shawn Nelson, Tim Hedges and Ryan Nelson.
The JOAT labs Hornets will be back this Saturday night as part of the big Cottonwood Classic Late Model show. 15th Annual John Arnberg Memorial Set For
Siskiyou Speedway Saturday Night
Yreka, CA...Following the rainout that occurred when the race was originally scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, the John Arnberg Memorial race has been rescheduled for this Saturday night at Siskiyou Golden Speedway. This is one of the biggest IMCA Modified races of the season. Also competing in an exciting four division show will be the IMCA Sport Modifieds, Mini Stocks and Jefferson State Jalopies. It will also be Veterans Night at the races, meaning all retired and active military personnel will be getting in for free.
John Arnberg was one of the top Yreka area races. Not only was he an IMCA Modified champion at Siskiyou Speedway, he also won a pair of Late Model championships at the old Medford Raceway. When he died tragically in a boating accident, the speedway began running this 38 lap race in his memory. This year's show will pay $1,238 to the winner with second place taking what's normally the winner's prize at $500.
Through the years, only three drivers have managed to pick up two wins in this race. Laat season, Mark Wauge got his second victory in what proved to be a race of attrition. Wauge himself won with a busted right front a frame. Travis Peery and Jon DeBenedetti are the other two-time winners of this event. Other notable winners in recent years include Nick Trenchard, Ryan McDaniel, Riley Simmons and Dave Duste Jr. Simmons has been burning up the scene at his home track in Susanville, where he has won six races in eight starts. He also got a win in Yreka earlier this year.
Who is coming still hasn't been revealed, but two local area stars anticipated are 2016 IMCA Sport Modified champion Jimmy Lipke and Justin Foux. Both drivers have been frontrunners in the Sport Modified division in recent years and have taken on the challenge of the IMCA Modifieds this year. With Yreka running just a limited schedule, both have been racing at the Medford track and are competing for Top 5 honors there. Another local area star, Duane Orsburn, is anticipated. He won a Trophy Dash in Yreka earlier this season. Some of the others to watch for this week include Jeremy Ohlde, Albert Gill and Jesse Bailey.
The IMCA Sport Modified division continues to be a battle between the Boswell brothers and Ethan Killingsworth. Though Killingsworth has a pair of wins, his effort to get a third victory saw him tangle with eventual winner Randy Wright last time out and fail to get a Top 5 five finish as a result. Ryder Boswell did finish fifth, but brother Colt Boswell didn't start the race. The standings will still be very close between the trio when they are released by IMCA on Friday.
After his second win of the season, Wright is competing for a Top 5 position in the standings. Because he's missed some races, he's not in the championship chase. As was proven last Saturday, Wright has become a threat to win on any given week. Likewise, two-time winner Merissa Henson looked good in chasing Wright across the finish line for her second runner-up finish. These two drivers will prove to be formidable challengers for the win this week, and others to watch for include the steady Sean Hulsey, Dennis Jorgensen and Donovan Rogers. Reiging champion Trevor Tiffee just collected his second straight third place finish and would seem to be another threat to get the win this week.
At times, Terry Kendrick has been rather dominant in the Mini Stock division this year. However, the past division champion had a bit of bad luck in early July, which may have seriously impacted his championship hopes. Regardless, he would have to be considered a threat to get his fifth win of this season this week. After a disqualification last week, Zak McMurry may have surrendered the lead in the championship battle. Darek Alford, who is still looking for his first win of the season, grabbed his fifth Top 3 finish in third, which could put him into the lead. He has finished as high as second on two occasions, but he is still looking for his first win.
Mike Whitaker collected his third second place finished of the season last time out. Though he is also looking for his first win, he's very much in the championship chase. When his car hasn't been ready, teammate and three-time champion Marilyn Yawnick has let him drive her car to keep his championship hopes alive. Yawnick herself is still looking for her first feature win of the season, though she's not chasing points. Other stars to watch for this week include Terry Alford, Michael Kendrick and Kassidy Wilkinson.
The Jefferson State Jalopies will be bringing their unique style of racing to the track this week. Division creators Karl Bernstein and JJ Smith continue to work on a fifth car as they are fielding all four of the machines driven so far. Michael Colson has won a pair of races this year as Wilkinson and Smith are the other winners. Bernstein and Smith have been putting different drivers behind the wheel of their other cars, and Yawnick has scored three second place finishes this year. Smith and Bernstein have said that they will continue building cars to help establish a foot hold for the division in Yreka.
Saturday Night is all about remembering John Arnberg, one of the all-time greats of Yreka racing. There is sure to be some exciting racing from start to finish, and you won't want to miss it. For further information, go to www.siskiyougoldenspeedway.com.

Wright, Cruff, Kendrick Win At Siskiyou Golden Speedway
Yreka, CA...Randy Wright won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event Saturday night at Siskiyou Golden Speedway. This was the second win of the season for Wright. A low point average put Wright on the pole for the Main Event, and he charged into the lead at the start. Second row starter Ethan Killingsworth soon struck to the second position, and the lead two cars pulled away just a little bit. There were a couple of yellow flags during the first 12 laps. As a yellow flag waved for another incident on lap 12, Killingsworth got together with Wright on the backstretch in their close battle. Killingsworth had to make a pit stop. Fifth row starter Merissa Henson was third at that point and moved past Sean Hulsey to take over second behind Wright on the restart. Wright drove a flawless race and led the rest of the way to take the checkered flag with Henson a strong second. Reigning champion Trevor Tiffee made a move around Hulsey for the third position as Hulsey finished fourth, followed by Ryder Boswell, Dennis Jorgensen, Killingsworth, Brandt Fellipe and Brian Hubert. Incoming point leader Colt Boswell was a Main Event scratch. Ryder Boswell and Hulsey won the eight lap heat races, while Killingsworth was the four lap Trophy Dash winner.
Jeff Cluff won the 25 lap Iron Giant Street Stock Main Event. Heavy attrition from the previous weekend race for the group at Gray's Harbor led to a light turn out, but the competitors mixed it up pretty well all night with three different winners. It was Kevin Roberts winning the eight lap heat race, while Kenny Bernstein was the four lap Trophy Dash winner. Bernstein gave it a good run in the Main Event, but Cluff was just a bit quicker as he scored the victory. Roberts finished third ahead of JD Rose and Sean Cronk.
Terry Kendrick won the 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event. Kendrick was the previous winner a month ago and has a division leading four wins so far this season. Kendrick had the pole for the race and made it a clean sweep for the night as he had earlier won his eight lap heat race and the four lap Trophy Dash, both ahead of reigning champion Marilyn Yawnick. The Top 5 in the finish and the point standings were shaken up as incoming point leader Zak McMurry and Kelly Wilkinson were both disqualified following post race tech. Championship contenders Mike Whitaker and Darek Alford finished second and third, respectively. Yawnick settled for a fourth place finish ahead of Terry Alford and Michael Kendrick. Wilkinson was the other heat race winner.
Next Saturday night is a special event. It's the annual John Arnberg Memorial race for the IMCA Modifieds, which will pay $1,038 to the winner. Also competing will be the IMCA Sport Modifieds, Mini Stocks and the Jefferson State Jalopies. For further information, go to www.siskiyougoldenspeedway.com.
Late Models, Street Stocks, Kids Rides At Coos Bay Speedway
Coos Bay, Oregon...The NASCAR Whelen All American Series continues this Saturday night with another exciting event on the schedule at Coos Bay Speedway. This will include the Third Annual Battle At The Beach as the iron Giant Street Stocks come to town to take on the local stars. The Americas Mattress Super Late Models will be there along with the Sportsman Late Models, Mini Outlaws, Hornets and Junior Stingers. The night will also feature Lucky Rides for the kids during intermission.
Last week saw Preston Luckman take another step closer to the Americas Mattress Super Late Model championship. Luckman took advantage of the misfortune of reigning champion Brody Montgomery to get the lead and his fourth win of the season. Luckman has stretched his point advantage to 36 over Montgomery. Meanwhile, 2015 champion Toby McIntyre enjoyed his best finish of the year in second, though he trails third place feature finisher Wayne Butler by 52 points in the race for third in the standings. Butler has won several Main Events in the Sportsman Late Model class, but he's looking for his first win in this division. It's been a couple of years since McIntyre claimed a win in this class. Other drivers hoping to get the win this week include two-time division point runner-up Thor Kristensen, Chris Kristensen, Deven Brown and Richard Wallace.
The Battle At The Beach Iron Giant Street. Show will be the big test for the local stars. Some of the best Street Stock drivers Oregon has to offer, including Brian Cronk, David Cronk, Greg McDonald, Josh Sheller, Bernie Lujan and Erik Jarnport, are anticipated. The Iron Giant Series competes in one race each at most of the tracks in Oregon and tracks in California and Washington as well, and there has yet to be a repeat winner. When they came to Coos Bay last year, it was Brian Cronk getting the win over local stand out Steve Dubisar and Andrew Langan.
Dubisar leads the local championship battle by a comfortable margin. In his 11 starts, he has eight victories, but last week was another instance where he was forced to settle for second behind Josh Bearden. Bearden appears to have returned just in time to come take on the Iron Giant stars. Reigning track champion Ken Fox currently holds second in the standings and is looking for his first win of the season. Some of the local stars to watch for include Leroy Rockwell, Peyton Reigard, and Charlie Withers.
Braden Fugate collected his ninth Sportsman Late Model win in 11 starts as he maintains at 70 point advantage over one-time winner Mike Taylor. The NASCAR point money is quite attractive as Fugate stands to win $1,000 for the championship. There are some drivers hoping to knock him from the winner's circle again this week, and some of those competitors include third ranked Garrett Smith, Tom Williams, Jared Simmons and reigning champion Dyllan Siewell.
Last week, it finally happened. The Fast VW Beetle of Rob Lauver overcame the mechanical issues that have plagued it all season long, and he scored a convincing feature win ahead of runaway point leader Sam Talon. Talon has won nine of the 10 races held so far and seems almost a lock to win his third-straight division championship. Jason Kellam and Dan Daniels are battling for second in the standings, and Kellam has a 12 point advantage. Both drivers have five Top 5 finishes to their credit. Jason Berrier has four Top 5 finishes to his credit.
In the Hornets division, Hannah Robison is leading the charge. Despite being aced out of the winner's circle by reigning champion Tyler Tullos last week, Robison stretched her point lead to 64 tallies ahead of Steven Parker. She now has 10 Top 5 finishes, including six wins, in her 11 starts. The win for Tullos was his third of the season as he trails Parker by just 16 points in a closer battle for second. Gabrielle Boles has notched eight Top 5 finishes, including multiple second place finishes. She is only 16 points behind Tullos for third. These four hard chargers are anticipated this week along with Ray Marshall, Jesse McIntyre, Dusty Shingleton and Kris Parker.
The Junior Stinger division continues to grow. This is the Hornets division for kids 11-14 years old. Last week, a division record 10 drivers showed up to compete. Griff Smith has more seat time than any of the other kids, and it shows. He has eight wins in his 10 starts and a 30 point advantage over Alex Butler in the championship chase. Butler and third ranked James Shingleton each have a feature win to their credit. Several new drivers have been joining the ranks in recent events, including Drake Vincent, Teagan Montgomery, Mary Vincent, Emory Johnson and Heather Burton.
Saturday night is an action packed lineup from start to finish. Kids Lucky Rides is always a fun attraction for the family, and the speedway is always offering things like this as one of the more fan friendly tracks on the west coast. For further information, go to www.coosbayspeedway.us.
Luckman Fugate, Dubisar Win At Coos Bay Speedway
Coos Bay, Oregon...August 17...Preston Luckman won the 30 lap NASCAR Super Late Model Main Event Saturday night at Coos Bay Speedway. This was the fourth win of the season for point leader Luckman, and it came on Ken Ware Chevrolet night at the races. Brody Montgomery was looking for his fifth win, and he charged into the lead at the start ahead of Toby McIntyre. Unfortunately, Montgomery's run came to an end on lap 15 as McIntyre briefly took over. However, seventh starter Luckman made a charge to the front of the pack and slipped past McIntyre for the lead on lap 18. Luckman would lead the rest of the way as he stretched his advantage to half a lap ahead of McIntyre at the finish. Wayne Butler finished third, followed by Chris Kristensen, Chris Ray, Thor Kristensen, Montgomery and Trina Post. Luckman was the eight lap heat race winner, while Montgomery picked up five lap Trophy Dash honors.
Braden Fugate won the 25 lap Sportsman Late Model Main Event. This was the ninth win of the season for the runaway point leader. Mike Taylor led the first four laps before surrendering first to Fugate. Jared Simmons soon took over second. Fugate set a rapid pace and won a comfortable margin ahead of Simmons, Taylor, Garrett Smith and Tom Williams. Fugate made it a clean sweep for the night by winning both the eight lap heat race and the five lap Trophy Dash.
Josh Bearden won the 25 lap Street Stock Main Event. This was the first win of the season for Bearden, and it came after a good battle with point leader Steve Dubisar. Dubisar had earlier won the heat race and charged into the Main Event lead from the start. Bearden took the second position from Trophy Dash winner Leroy Rockwell on the fifth lap and set his sites on Dubisar. On the 13th lap, Bearden took the lead, but Dubisar ran closely behind him the rest of the way. Bearden stayed smooth down the stretch and held off Dubisar for the victory with Rockwell a close third, followed by reigning champion Ken Fox, Troy Chamberlain and Charlie Withers.
Tyler Tullos won the 20 lap Hornets Main Event. This was the third win of the season for the reigning champion. Jesse McIntyre had a front row start and set the early pace ahead of Gabrielle Boles. Tullos took the second position from Boles, and he raced by McIntyre for the lead two laps later. Point leader Hannah Robison started back in the fifth row, and she put the moves on McIntyre to take over second on lap 15. However, Tullos had a half straightaway lead over Robison by the time the race ended. Stacy Robinson finish third, followed by McIntyre, Boles, Alyssa Johnson, Trace Fugate, Dusty Singleton, April Warmack and Peyton Reigard. Chris Parker and Boles were the eight lap heat race winners, and McIntyre picked up the five lap Trophy Dash win.
Rob Lauver won the 25 lap Mini Outlaw Main Event. Lauver has had a season with several mechanical problems, and this was his first win of the season. Lauver led from the outset to score the win ahead of point leader Sam Talon and Kelly Raelynn. Lauver won the eight lap heat race, and Talon was the five lap Trophy Dash winner.
Griff Smith won the 15 lap Junior Stinger Main Event. This was the eighth win of the season for the current point leader and reigning champion. Car count grew to 10 competitors, though Mary Vincent was a Main Event scratch. Smith had the pole for the feature race and led all the way for the impressive victory. Drake Vincent was a lead lap second, followed by Cameron Metzgus, Heather Burton, Emery Johnson, Kelsee Workman, James Shingleton, Alex Butler and Teagan Montgomery. Smith won his eight lap heat race and the five lap Trophy Dash to make it a clean sweep, while Drake Vincent was the other heat winner.
Racing continues next Saturday night with the Third Annual Iron Giant Street Stock Series Battle At The Beach. It's also Lucky Rides Night for the kids. The NASCAR Whelen All American Series lineup will also include Super Late Models, Sportsman Late Models, Mini Outlaws, Hornets and Junior Stingers. For further information, go to www.coosbayspeedway.us.
Wags And Wheels Night
At Mountain Valley Raceway Saturday
Hayfork, CA...Racing returns to Mountain Valley Raceway this Saturday night. Because of a rainout earlier this year, track officials decided in July to add this race to the schedule. It's also Wags and Wheels night at the speedway. The night is being dedicated to the The Trinity Sisters Pet Rescue and Hayfork Valley Spay and Neuter Fund. There will also be a doggy parade on the front stretch during intermission, which will consist of rescue dogs. On top of all of that, the track will again be giving away raffle prizes. Competing divisions on the 3/8 mile dirt oval will include the Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Enduro Cars and the B Modifieds.
The Eighth Annual Clyde Cordell Memorial race yielded a surprise winner in the Hobby Stock division and Brian Young added his name to the perpetual trophy. Young benefitted from the mechanical misfortune of Josh Smith who was leading the race and seemed to have things well in hand before his rear end locked up on him. Tressen Smith and Russ Newman both ran strong in second and third, respectively, and this duo will probably be at the head of the pack again this week. Some of the stars to watch for this week are Mikey Ruth, Josh Michaels and Isaac Kephart.
The Hobby Stock division isn't the only class putting on some great racing for the fans. The Mini Stocks have been mixing it up all season long with a variety of different winners taking the glory. Last time out, Ricky Berry drove his fast truck to his second-straight win ahead of past champion Jack Turner. Making this division really exciting to watch are such notables as William Young, Joey Young and Larry Richardson, all of whom have been winners this season. Freddy Leeper, Wade Smith and Ian Thulin are among the others to watch for this week.
Berry wasn't done with his Mini Stock win last time out. He also won the wild and exciting Enduro race that closed the program. Last time out, there were 10 of these competitors. Bryan Gummerus and Jeff Drake have been winners this year, but Berry was the one taking the glory on Clyde Cordell Memorial night. The Enduro race is really something you need to be there to seem. It features all different makes and models of cars competing on a watered down track in no holds barred racing action. Some of the stars to watch for include JD Hudman, William Young, Ralph Thurman and Mike Wines.
Tressen Smith has grabbed the lion's share of the glory in the B Modified division this year, though Patrick Solometo managed to evict him from the winner's circle earlier this year. Joe Short has also been a dedicated racer in the effort to help establish this division in Hayfork. The class uses rules very similar to the IMCA Sport Modified division, which is proving to be very popular across the United States.
Wags and Wheels night at the speedway should be lots of fun. Gates will open at 6pm with the first racing starting at 7. Adult General Admission 18+ is $10, Seniors 62+ and Veterans is $8, students 17 and under are $5 and Children 5 and under are free. For further information, go to the Mountain Valley Raceway Facebook page.
Becker Wins Tyler Wolf Memorial At Silver Dollar Speedway
Chico, CA...August 16...Sean Becker won the 30 lap Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway. This was the annual Tyler Wolf Memorial race, and it was the third win of the season for the five-time champion aboard the Dan Menne owned Sprint Car.
Andy Gregg had the pole and looked like a sure winner for much of the race. Steven Ingraham was an early second ahead of Kyle Hirst. Hirst slipped past Ingraham for second on lap 11, but Ingraham briefly regained the position on lap 14. A lap later, Hirst again took second, and Ingraham saw his race end on lap 17. Gregg continued to lead Hirst and Becker on the restart. Becker put the moves on Hirst for the second position on lap 21 and set his sites on Gregg. On the 26th lap, Becker seized his opportunity to take the lead. Becker led the rest of the way for the victory. Hirst made a last lap pass on Gregg to finish second with Andy Forsberg also getting by for third. Gregg settled for fourth, followed by Chase Majdic, Brad Bumgarner, Colby Copeland, point leader Kyle Offill, Chelsea Blevins and DJ Freitas.
There was a solid 28 car turnout for the show, and Forsberg had the quick lap of 11.925. Justin Sanders was second quick at 12.016. The eight lap heat race wins went to Gregg, Hirst and Ingraham. Sanders won the eight lap Trophy Dash. Blake Carrick led all 12 laps to win the B Main. Josh Bates was an early second, lost the position to Casey McClain on lap six and regained it on lap 10 as McClain retired. Bates would finish second, followed by Raquel Hall and Jeremy Wilson.
Kyle Allen won the 20 lap Hobby Stock Main Event. Allen is the point leader, and this was his eighth win in eight starts. Maurice Merrill had the pole for the race and led the first seven laps ahead of reigning Marysville champion Shannon Collins. Collins made his way past Merrill for the lead on lap eight, and third row starter Allen slipped past Merrill for second on 12. Two laps later, Allen got by Collins to take the lead. Allen led the rest of the way for the victory with Collins settling for second, followed by James West, Jeremiah Creedon, Jacob Johnson, Zack Thornton, Merrill and Darren Ballentine. Six lap heat race wins went to West and Zach Lindgren. Lindgren also won the six lap Trophy Dash, but his night ended with mechanical issues.
Matt Micheli won the 20 lap Street Stock Main Event. This was the fifth win of the season for the current point leader. Matt Micheli led the Main Event from the start with heat race winner Richard Brace Jr an early second. Brace saw his race come to an end on lap four with Richard Workman taking up pursuit. However, Matt Micheli pulled to about a straightaway advantage over Workman by the waving of the checkered flag. Ken Micheli finished third, followed by Gary Newman, Fritz Zanker and Brace.
The King Of The West/NARC Fujitsu Winged 410 Sprint Car Series comes to town on Thursday night with the IMCA Sport Modifieds running in support. There will be a regular Friday night show a night later, featuring Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Street Stocks, IMCA Sport Modifieds and Hobby Stocks. It's also Pepsi Trophy Night. For further information, go www.silverdollarspeedway.com.
Grimes, Taylor, Smith Win Championship Night Races
At Little Southern Oregon Speedway
White City, Oregon... August 16...Isaac Grimes saved his best for last as he won his first ever 15 lap Beginners Box Stock Main Event Friday night at Little Southern Oregon Speedway. However, he still settled for second in the standings behind new champion Jayme DeBenedetti. Newcomer Elijah Humphrey led the race until bringing out a yellow flag after eight laps. DeBenedetti was running second ahead of Grimes at the time, and she had the lead on the restart. However, Grimes pressured her until making an inside pass in Turn 3 of the 12th lap to get the lead. Grimes went on to win ahead of DeBenedetti, Bentleigh Chapman, Humphrey, Caleb Ranney, Talia Colley and Bhaltaire Edwards. Grimes and Chapman won six lap heat races.
Trevor Taylor wrapped up championship seasons in the Open Bike, 450cc Bike and 250cc Bike classes. In the Open Bike class, heat winner Taylor ran second behind Jesse Miller until making a Turn 2 pass on lap five to gain the lead. Taylor led the rest of the 12 lap event with Miller a close second ahead of Rick Roach, Dusty Tsarnas and James Tsarnas.
Taylor also won the 450cc Bike 12 lap Main Event. Dusty Tsarnas ran second until being passed by Roach on the backstretch on lap three. Roach immediately moved behind the heat race winner Taylor. Roach pressured Taylor the rest of the way, but Taylor prevailed at the checkered flag ahead of Roach, Dusty Tsarnas and James Tsarnas.
Cadyn Smith won his first ever 250 Kart 20 lap Main Event. In doing so, he moved into second in the standings as Trevor Grimes clinched his second championship in the last three years. Vinny DeBenedetti and Grimes picked up heat race wins, and DeBenedetti led at the start ahead of Smith and Grimes. DeBenedetti appeared to have things in hand when the 2018 champion stalled for a lap 10 yellow flag. This put Smith into the lead. Grimes and Emma Rodgers battled for second, but Grimes took the spot on lap 13. However, as Grimes made an attempt to get by Smith on the inside down the backstretch on lap 16, he ran out of room and ended up in the infield into one of the small tires as a yellow flag waved. Smith led the restart. Grimes made a strong attempt to get around Smith in the final turn, but Smith prevailed ahead of Grimes, Rodgers and DeBenedetti.
Ben Herbert prevailed in the 12 lap Big Trike Main Event. Herbert took the lead from heat race winner Ryan Comstock on lap two and pulled away to victory ahead of Comstock and new champion Mike Burson Sr.
Mike Burson Sr won the 12 lap Little Trike Main Event in a dual with his daughter, new champion McKayla Burson. The two exchanged the lead several times, and McKayla Burson led going into the final turn. McKayla drifted up on exit in Turn 4 and hit the wall. She was shaken up, but she was okay as Mike Burson won.
Brody Taylor won the 12 lap Small Bike Main Event and six lap heat race to wrap up his championship. Brother Jax Taylor finished second in both races and finished second in the standings.
Keaton Augustine made a couple of victory laps as he wrapped up his second straight Box Stock championship.
Dothage, Williams, Coughlin Win Yreka Outlaw Kart Races
Yreka, CA...August 16...Dryver Dothage won the 20 lap 250 Kart Main Event Friday night at the little Outlaw Kart track at the fairgrounds. This was the second win in three starts for the third-generation racer from Kelseyville. Dothage had the pole for the feature race and held off point leader Cale Cunial for the victory. Logan McKnight finished third, followed by Nicholas Perrin, Cole Cunial, Drew Berry and Dallin Dagata. The eight lap heat race wins were earned buy Cale Cunial, McKnight, Dagata and Perrin.
Brayden Williams won the 20 lap 500 Open Kart Main Event. There have been seven different winners in the eight races held so far, and Williams is the first two-time winner of the group. Williams and Wyatt Pinckney won the eight lap heat races, and Williams held off Pinckney to win the Main Event. Rick Schamber and point leader Brionna Fuller were Main Event scratches.
Jaxon Coughlin won the 20 lap Sealed Box Stock Main Event. This was only the second appearance of the season of Coughlin. Coughlin picked up the victory with Austin Bartholomew finishing second ahead of championship contender Carson Henson, point leader Chayce Smith and Shailene Horn. Smith and Coughlin were the eight lap heat race winners.
Larry Fuller won the 12 lap UAS Speedway Kart Main Event. This was his second win of the season. Brionna Fuller finished second, followed by point leader Steve Rambo and Ed Grubb. Larry Fuller made it a clean sweep as he won both eight lap heat races.
Hunter Granger maintained his Open Box Stock point lead with his second 15 lap Main Event win of the season. He took the lead from pole sitter Hunter Colson and held him off for the win as Paige Boswell finished third. Colson won both of the eight lap heat races.
The next show at the little track at the fairgrounds will be on August 30th. For further information, go to the Yreka Outlaw Kart Facebook page.
Pit Stops
Hall
of Fame night at Southern Oregon Speedway is in the record books, and
by all accounts it was success. It's seemed like the community was more
excited about the event this year as six Southern Oregon racing legends
were honored. Sadly, the only surviving member of the new group going in
was Dave Shinn. Dave was very excited about the occasion and brought
some of his old clippings and photos to display for the fans to see. He
was also given the opportunity to drive the Mark Wauge Late Model for
some hot laps. This was the first time that Dave had been behind the
wheel of a race car in thirty years, and it looked like the 1987 POSSE
champion still has it.
Within
the span of the last year, the community has mourned the passing of
Markey James, Jim Walker Sr and most recently Jay McCleary. These three
racers were among the biggest stars at the speedway in their time, and
all were inducted into the Hall of Fame. It was nice to see the
outpouring of love and respect shown to the new members, which also
included long time flagman Freddy Higginbotham and Sam Dykes.
The
Late Models had an opportunity to tune up for this weekend Cottonwood
Classic, and this proved to be a very interesting night. After winning
his heat race, Darren Coffell wasted little time getting the lead and
reminded everybody that he is still a player in the coming big show as
he sped to his second win of the season. Coffell missed the previous
race, which enabled Dave Everson to move into second in the standings
with just one point event remaining. Everson did his best to protect his
point status by finishing a respectable fifth in the Main Event.
You
might have expected that Coffell was the big star at the front of the
pack, but all eyes seemed to be on Mark Wauge and point leader Trent
Elliott. First of all, people were wondering how the motor would hold up
in the Wauge car. He looked impressive in winning his heat race, and he
settled into an early second in the Main Event. Elliott, who has won
three Main Events this year, seemed to be piloting a rocket ship. A
disastrous heat race forced him to start last on the grid in the Main
Event, but he wasted little time getting to the front of the pack. This
is where things got interesting.
As
they motored into the first turn at about the midway point of the race,
Elliott made contact with Wauge, resulting in a Wauge spin. It didn't
take long for a call to come down sending Elliott to the back of the
back with Wauge for the restart. Neither driver stayed back there for
long as they made a mad dash to the front of the pack. All eyes were on
the two drivers, wondering what might happen next. What happened was
Elliott managed to get the second place finish, and Wauge scored his
third third place finish of the year. The one positive Mark could take
out of the race was that he managed to get through the night with his
motor intact and ran very well. Could he be a threat to win some of that
big money this weekend?
Doug
Elkins, who is in the midst of a potential championship effort at
Willamette Speedway, made a surprise visit along with BJ Donofrio. Both
drivers ran in the Top 5, but only Elkins was able to get it to the
finish line with a fourth place finish as Donofrio finished further back
in seventh. It's possible that the man Elkins is competing with for the
Willamette championship, Joey Tanner, could be on hand for this week's
big race. It was also nice to see reigning champion John Dees back
again. John has moved and has been racing at the tracks up north, but he
did a respectable job in finishing sixth in the featue race. He could
be another driver to watch in the big money race. Another driver looking
good was Late Model Lites point leader Greg Arnold, who got as high as
third before ending up eighth at the checkered flag.
Track
officials are anticipating a car count reaching into the high twenties
or possibly even the thirties this Saturday night with the big money
that's at stake. This will include some top notch competitors from
California, including Bobby Hogge IV, Richard Papenhausen and Kellen
Chadwick. Chadwick will be piloting the Chris Biggs owned car. Hogge
will be part of the Paul Guglielmoni team. That team was in Placerville
last weekend, and it was Clark Guglielmoni getting the win on that
occasion. Fans have been wanting to see a big Late Model show at
Southern Oregon Speedway for a while now, and Saturday night will be
their opportunity. It's going to be good.
IMCA
Modifieds and Sport Modifieds will take center stage the following
weekend for the big Labor Day Weekend R Charles Snyder Salute. The money
will be on the line as the Modifieds compete for $5,000 to win on
Sunday, while the Sport Modifieds get $2,000 for the win. Local stars
are hoping to get a piece of the big money. As usual, the local point
race could be affected based on the outcome of that weekend. Several top
drivers will be coming in from Oregon and California for a shot at the
money, so last Saturday was the final tune up opportunity for the
regulars.
It
seemed as if incoming IMCA Modified point leader Zach Fettinger had a
rocket ship in preliminaries. He was about to attempt a last lap pass on
Jesse Bailey to win the Trophy Dash, but he ended up spinning as Bailey
one. He won his heat race, but his high point average meant he was
starting further back in the Main Event. Bailey wasn't starting much
further up, but he seemed to have figured out that there was a nice
groove on the outside for the taking. Both drivers found their way to
the front, but the luck ran out for Fettinger, who was eliminated in a
crash that also saw three-time reigning champion Albert Gill end up on
the sidelines after they had been competing for Top 3 positions.
Andy
Freeman hasn't been seen too often this year, but he has his eyes on
the big September 1st prize. Freeman's low point average put him up on
the front, and he proceeded to lead 23 laps of the Main Event with
another of the top stars from the past, 2003 champion Jeremy Richey, in
pursuit. It was during the final 10 laps when Bailey started making his
move on the outside, and a high pass in Turn 4 on the 24th lap is what
secured him the lead and victory. Not only was this the second win for
the 2017 champion, but with Fettinger on the sidelines, Bailey cut into
the point big lead. The R Charles Snyder Salute will be very important
in this battle as only that event and one more remain on the schedule.
Nick
Trenchard has won some big shows at Southern Oregon Speedway and has
become somewhat of a bounty hunter, rather than a point chaser, in
recent years. The new car seemed to work well in his heat race win, but
Trenchard had problems early on in the Main Event, forcing him to come
back from last in the 19 car field. As the race wore on, the #54 car was
picking off cars one by one. While Bailey was making his move around
Freeman for the win, Trenchard finally got into the Top 5 and would
settle for fourth behind Richey. Paul Rea was making his second start at
the speedway and the Cottage Grove racer had a respectable fifth place
finish ahead of Jeremy Ohlde and Jimmy Lipke. Lipke is one of two
rookies in the Top 5 in the standings, and the 2016 Yreka champion has
been doing a good job this year.
There
was also a bit of a point shake up in the IMCA Sport Modifieds, where
two-time reigning champion and point leader Jorddon Braaten is on his
way to a potential third title. Braaten broke out the broom as he won
both the Trophy Dash and his heat race. He started back in the fifth row
of the Main Event, while the surprising Austin Petray and Jentzen Knips
ran at the front of the pack. On this occasion, Braaten wasted little
time getting the lead on the sixth lap. Once he got it, he brought it
home to his third win of the season. There was further good news as the
man coming into the night ranked second, Matt Sanders, was out of the
Main Event early. Braaten will therefore increase his lead as the next
closest driver, Isaac Sanders, will be trailing by over 20 points.
If
you think Jorddon might be worried about just playing defense and
getting a respectable showing in the R Charles Snyder Salute, you don't
know him very well. This is a race that has been in his sights for the
past couple years, and he's looking to score the big victory. He knows
the competition will be tough, but if the way the #84 car was looking
last weekend was any indication, you can expect Jorddon to come out
strong that weekend.
Branden
Wilson, meanwhile, managed to pick up another Top 5 effort as he tries
to strengthen his hold on a Top 5 point position. This hasn't
necessarily been the smoothest season for last year's top rookie, but
Wilson seems to be dialing things in. In this case, he battled Mike
Medel before Medel settled for a sixth place finish. However, Mike did
manage to get a heat race win earlier in the evening in one of the more
exciting races as he battled Rich McCoy. McCoy would also finish seventh
in the Main Event and is somebody who shouldn't be counted out for the
big $2,000 prize next weekend. Two other drivers who continue to get our
attention this year for their improvement are Brian Knorr and Steve
Lysinger. Brian managed to get an eighth place finish, while Steve
finished 10th. Both drivers continue to rank in the Top 10 in the
standings.
It's
difficult at times to even describe how impressive David Steele has
been in the Bobbio's Pizza Mini Stocks. With all of the experience he
carries, he is probably the best prepared driver in the division. Not
only is he skilled at motor tuning, he also knows how to set the car up.
It shows as David can put the black #67 car anywhere on the track, and
it seems to be going to the front. For the third-straight race, Steele
scored a clean sweep, and this was also his fifth win of the season as
he has his eyes on his second-straight championship. With that kind of
performance, it's very difficult to be anywhere near this guy when it
comes to points, but there is a driver still hanging in there.
Ashtin
Hedges has also done a good job, and if you didn't have a guy like
Steele in the field, he would be leading the standings. This young up
and coming star has been consistently finishing in the Top 3 in the Main
Event and has a win to his credit. Hedges finished second in the latest
race with 2013 champion Steve Goetz in close pursuit in third. Though
Hedges lost a few more points to Steele, should Steele stumble in the
last two races, he still has a shot at the championship. For Goetz,
motor problems saw to it that points weren't going to be a thing for him
this year, but he still hopes to get a win in his yellow #55 car.
Overall, it was a good night for Steve as he won his heat race and
finished third in the feature.
Kristopher
Mix may not have much of a shot in the championship chase without some
real serious luck coming his way, but the third podium position in the
standings is still within his grasp. Mix was looking good in his heat
race before he spun. In the Main Event, he battled the guy he's trying
to keep behind him in the standings, Hunter Magnan. It didn't seem as if
all was well with the Magnan car as he settled for fifth, but unlike
Mix, Magnum is a feature winner this year. He's also still not far
behind Mix as not much changed in their battle for third after this
show. Mix did punch his ticket into the next Trophy Dash by finishing
fourth.
We're
hearing quite a bit of talk about potential new Mini Stock drivers for
next year, and two of them could be coming up from the Hornets division.
Reigning Hornet champion Bree Tritchler and Derrel Nelson Jr could be
in the class next year. Nelson just sold his car to Zachary Tener, who
scored a respectable fifth place finish in his first start. After the
Hall of Fame ceremonies were concluded, the grandson of Jim Walker Sr
confirmed that he's looking at making his racing debut in this class
soon. It could be that we'll see the numbers go up a little bit in the
Mini Stocks next season, which would be nice to see.
The
JOAT Labs Hornet division battle took a turn for the good for point
leader Dylan Sauer Sauer had a rare occasion where he shared a heat
race with Tim Hedges and he managed to hold him off for the win there
and the Trophy Dash as well. Hedges had Sauer in his sights in the Main
Event, but a flat tire would cost him laps. This caused Hedges to lose a
little bit of ground in the point battle. Sauer, though not dominating
the Main Event, scored his fifth win of the season to double his lead.
It was another Hedges, Jenna Hedges, who gave him some good pressure
down the stretch before she settled for a season best second.
Quinton
Tritchler had been in the hunt, but his son, Chris Boynton, managed to
bump him from the podium as Boynton finished third ahead of Tritchler at
the checkered flag. The Hornets division saw the debut of a new
competitor as Cole Gillespie ran the #53 car. Unfortunately, Gillespie
had mechanical issues after the heat race and scratched from the
feature. Shawn Nelson, meanwhile, debuted a new car. He had been driving
the Hedges Racing #4t
car and was doing a respectable job with it this year. It will be
interesting to see what he can do with the other car once he works the
bugs out.
Little Southern Oregon Speedway dropped the curtain on their season with championship night. It's known that the count is down at several tracks as cost and other factors have contributed to the decline in Kart count. Promoter Mike McCann made the call to bring in the Flat Track Bikes and Trikes this year, which has helped keep things going. It's also made for some very interesting racing on any given Friday night.
The 250 Kart championship had already been wrapped up in favor of 2017 champion Trevor Grimes. Grimes has won four Main Events this year, though the win in season finale was going to avoid him. Vinny DeBenedetti has looked fast this year, but if there was a hard luck driver in the field, it would be the 2018 champion. Vinny again had problems after leading several laps, but it wasn't Grimes who swept in to take advantage of the situation.
Cadyn Smith is a two-time Beginner's Box Stock champion at the little track, and he's been having a pretty good year this year. He came into the night with four-straight podium finishes and was going to receive the Most Improved Driver honors. However, the son of Dwarf Car star Ryan Smith was hoping to make a move on second in the standings and possibly pick up his first winners trophy. When DeBenedetti had his problems, Smith stepped forward to get the lead. As expected, Grimes was there to make a challenge and it got close. When Grimes ran out of real estate and spun into the infield with a few laps to go, it looked like smooth sailing for Smith. In fact, not even a last turn attempt by Grimes to get around would keep the young charger from picking up his first win in this class. Grimes would settle for second with Emma Rodgers taking a checkered flag in third.
The Beginners Box Stock championship honors were pretty much decided when the green flag waved on Jayme DeBenedetti. However, She was hoping that she could get her fourth win of the season. The division saw visits from Cottage Grove regular Bentleigh Chapman and Urijah Humphrey, the latter of which led some early laps before stalling. DeBenedetti may have thought this win could be hers, but her closest point rival, Isaac Grimes, turned in his best effort of the year. Grimes was a heat race winner earlier in the night, and he made a charge in the final half-dozen laps to take the lead and secure his first ever win. Second was still a nice way to wrap up a championship season for DeBenedetti as Chapman, Humphrey and Most Improved Driver Caleb Ranney made up the Top 5 at the finish. Rookie of the Year Talia Colley was sixth.
Keaton Augustine has been making trips more than two hours away to be a part of the show at the little track, but to the team's disappointment, there really haven't been many competitors supporting this program this year. Augustine was the reigning champion and was on hand to take some victory laps for repeating as the champion. This young third-generation competitor has done well in this class, and his father, 2017 Late Model champion Nathan Augustine, says that Keaton will be moving up to the Junior Street Stock division at Madras Speedway.
The Flat Track Bikes have been supported well by the Taylor family this season as they've made most of the races. Trevor Taylor has proven to be a formidable competitor this year and was on hand to wrap up championships in the 250cc, 450cc and Open Bike classes. Trevor rode to the Open Bike feature win ahead of Jessie Miller with Rick Roach in close pursuit. It was Roach giving Taylor his best challenge in the 450cc Bike class before settling for second. Theo Lount, who was absent this week, wrapped up second place seasons in all three bike classifications. It was Trevor's younger brothers Brody and Jax who ended up finishing first and second in the Little Bike feature to wrap up their first and second place seasons.
Mike Burson Sr and daughter MiKayla Burson have been good supporters of the Big Trike and Little Trike classes this year and as a result wrapped up championships as Mike was the Big Trike champion and MiKayla was the Little Trike champion. Mike and MiKayla had a spirited duel going in the Little Trike Main Event until MiKayla, who was leading going into the last turn, got too high on exit and hit the wall head on. Fortunately, she was okay and in good spirits as she collected her championship trophy. Mike would finish second in the Little Trike point race ahead of Ben Herbert.
Herbert is one of the fastest Big Trike competitors we've seen at the speedway, and he ran impressively in scoring another feature win in that class ahead of the man who won the first Trike feature of the year, Ryan Comstock. Mike Burson finished third to wrap up his championship season. At times, the Trike classes have been very well supported this year as there were over a dozen competitors on one night in particular. The Trike and Bike classes have certainly been entertaining to watch.
Kevin Barba and his crew had lots of work to do to get Siskiyou Golden Speedway ready for its scheduled return on August 17th. This might have been a week earlier than you'd normally see, but Barba was intent on getting back to racing as soon as possible. The track was ready to go on Saturday, and the occasion was the Iron Giant Street Stock visit. An earlier visit back on Memorial Day weekend yielded 14 competitors, but rains came and cancelled the Main Event that night. This was their scheduled makeup, and they already had one strike against them when a race filled with heavy attrition at Elma, Washington resulted in several cars being inactive for the weekend.
Two California competitors, who it's possible could be supportive of any sort of effort Yreka might attempt to get the class going, JD Rose and Ken Bernstein, made the visit. In fact, Bernstein won one of the preliminary races and ran well in the Main Event before finishing second to Jeff Cluff. Though the car count was a bit light at five competitors, all of the Iron Giant winnings were paid as advertised, including some nice trophies, thanks to the sponsorship of the Chew On This Jerky company.
Siskiyou Golden Speedway continues to see an upturn in support from the IMCA Sport Modifieds, and the division continues to be very interesting. As has been the case for the past few seasons, you never know who will win from week to week. Randy Wright had been winless for their previous two seasons, but the #28 car has been running well this year. He weathered a serious challenge from championship contender Ethan Killingsworth, and Killingsworth saw his race come to an end when a yellow flag waved and he ended up making contact with Wright down the back straightaway. Wright saw two-time winner Merissa Henson behind him for the restart, but he held off the young charger to get the win.
It took about half a season, but reigning champion Trevor Tiffee finally returned in his new car. He has actually run the car out of state, and it's been looking pretty good so far. On Saturday night, Tiffee managed to get it up to third place for his second-straight finish in that position as he dials it in with the hopes of getting a victory before the season concludes. Meanwhile, Ryder Boswell rebounded from his disappointment of the previous race to finish fifth. This should have the standings pretty close between he and Killingsworth, while brother Colt Boswell was a Main Event scratch. The division again had 10 entries last Saturday, and this was without a few of the regulars who missed the action. .
While you can go to the IMCA website and see points for the Sport Modifieds, finding out who's doing what in the Mini Stock division is a bit of a challenge. We've been receiving updates from point keeper Marilyn Yawnick periodically, though there haven't been any updates after the last two races. It was known that Zak McMurry and Darek Alford, the two youngest drivers in division the field, ran at the top. However, McMurry suffered a setback last week when he was disqualified in post race tech along with Kassidy Wilkinson. It will certainly hurt his point effort, though his championship hopes are not over just yet. Because of a terrible span in July that saw him not starting two Main Events, Past champion Terry Kendrick may be out of the hunt, but that didn't stop him from picking up his division leading fourth win of the season last time out. Kendrick is actually having some of his best results in years.
With two time-champion Mike Whitaker and Darek Alfred finishing second and third last week, it's expected that both drivers will be doing well in the standings, and Alford may actually be the leader. Hopefully, we'll see some updates soon. What's been interesting is this division has been a bit more whde open with five different winners taking their turns at the top of the podium, and you never know who it could be this week. Whitaker has finished as high as second, as has Alford, but neither have gotten the win just yet. Also winless is three-time reigning champion Marilyn Yawnick. This promises to be a battle that will go down to the end of the season.
The one thing that appealed to Drake Nelson when he brought in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series sanctioning at Coos Bay was the attractive point fund money being offered to the Top 5 competitors in the four chosen divisions, America's Mattress Super Late Models, Sportsman Late Models, Street Stocks and Hornets. During the past two seasons, the Super Late Model champion has walked away with in excess of $5,000. That money went to Mike George in 2017, while Brody Montgomery made it to the pay window last year. Even second and third place in the standings will be receiving a four digit paycheck.
Montgomery and 2018 Cottage Grove Speedway Late Model champion Preston Luckman have both been very fast this year, but Montgomery has had just a little bit more bad luck than Luckman. This was highlighted last week as Montgomery was leading in his bid to get his fifth win, only to end up sidelined before the end of the race. Luckman was there to seize the moment and collect his fourth win, increasing his lead just a little bit more as the season is winding down. Though Montgomery isn't out of the battle, he's going to have a challenging time making up the ground he's lost to Luckman if Luckman keeps finishing as well as he has been.
You're still talking about $1,000 or more going to third place in the standings, which is a position currently being held by two-time Sportsman Late Model champion Wayne Butler. Butler bought the old Montgomery car this season and has stopped competing in the Sportsman class to focus on these efforts. He picked up a third place finish last week, which was his best effort so far. This also keeps him leading by a pretty good margin over 2015 champion Toby McIntyre in the race for third. McIntyre is knocking on the door to victory and finished second last week. Though the numbers in this class aren't huge, they have improved noticeably over last season, which is a good sign for the speedway.
The $1,000 paycheck seems to be all but written to Braden Fugate in the Sportsman Late Model class. Fugate has won most of the Main Events this year, while Steve Dubisar has done the same in the Street Stocks. Dubisar stands to win $700 for his effort, but he's also got his eyes on the big Iron Giant Street Stock race coming up this week. He may be going back to the drawing board as two-time champion Josh Bearden was just a bit quicker than Dubisar in holding him off in a close battle for the victory last week. Meanwhile, reigning champion Ken Fox used another good finish to move into second in the standings. As mentioned above, the Top 5 competitors in the four selected divisions get to enjoy some of that NASCAR point fund money.
In the Hornets division, that driver is "Hurricane" Hannah Robison. Robison has won six times this year, and what makes that impressive is that most of the time she's coming from the back of the pack to do it. Robison has a comfortable lead going over Steven Parker, and that isn't likely to change without her skipping a race again. Parker is still not to comfortably ahead of reigning champion Tyler Tullos. Tullos now has three wins this season, though the consistent Gabrielle Boles isn't far behind. Gabrielle has picked up eight Top 5 finishes, including three runner-up finishes, but she's certainly experienced the ugly side of the race as she rolled her car on one occasion. That didn't stop her from coming back strong next time out.
While the Hornet division delivers the bigger car count at the speedway, the Junior Stinger division saw 10 competitors show up last time out. The speedway decided to add this class last year as a way to get 11 to 14 year old kids on to the big track. Griff Smith has certainly been the dominant force and appears to be headed for his second championship. We also witnessed Smith picking up a third place finish in a Hornet Main Event this year, showing that he is just about ready to graduate to the next level. This is what the Junior Stinger division is about, bringing in new stars that can move up into the other classes and help grow the car count.
Orland Raceway had another one of those special occasions last week. This was Kids Bike Night, and thanks to donations that were secured through the efforts of Tandy Hood and Barbara Crain, 44 bikes were given away. The numbers continue to grow at Orland Raceway, which was in a serious state of decline a few years ago. Rich Hood is in his fourth year of promoting the speedway and has brought some stability to things. Last weekend saw 50 competitors across the lineup of divisions. The track has one of the top Pure Stock divisions going in the state, and there were 18 competitors on hand for the recent race.
The other nice thing about that lineup is the quality of drivers competing in this Pure Stock class includes the likes of past Mini Stock champion Wes Smock, past Orland Pure Stock champions Paul Stephens, Jeremy Langenderfer and Steve Martin, reigning Marysville champion Shannon Collins and Kevin Pendergrass. Pendergrass, who's driven just about everything at the speedway, made his Pure Stock return a couple races ago, and though he wasn't fast enough to keep Smock from scoring his fourth win of the season, he still held on for second ahead of Collins. There continues to be a very close battle in the championship race, and Phil Spencer certainly helped things out in his quest to overtake Keith Ross for the lead. Ross, who won the last two Mini Truck championships before moving up, ended up eighth at the finish.
Denny McNary continues to be consistent in the Wingless Spec Sprints, and in the end, that may be what gets the job done. Tony Richards is a past champion at both Orland and Chico, and nobody would argue that he's been the fastest driver this year. Because motor problems prevented him from starting the season opener, he spotted the entire field 50 points. He's been steadily trying to chip away at McNary's lead, but even when he's winning, Denny's only a spot or two behind him. Richards had mechanical problems in hot laps, and the team went back to the shop to get his second car for the Main Event. He managed to come from the back to finish ahead of Gary Paulson, but with McNary in third again, he didn't gain much.
The Wingless Spec Sprint division has been doing well this season, and there were 12 competitors last Saturday once again. This included Gary Paulson, who made his first start of the season in second. Rookie Jeremy Langenderfer continues to do well in his maiden voyage in this class as he finished fourth ahead of Tyler Rockwell. One of the nicest things about this self starting, two barrel carburetor, 360 cast iron engine Sprint Car division is that it opens the door for Pure Stock racers such as Langenderfer to give them an opportunity to race a Sprint Car for the first time.
Though Dan Webster and his son Zack Webster have been very fast in the Mini Truck division, Kalvin Kvalvik has been consistent. He continues to pull away from William Fogle in the point race, and he helped his effort last week with another feature win. Webster happened to exit the race early on, and Kvalvik was pursued by his closest point competitor Fogle, while Anthony Esquivelle ended up third. Orland has the longest running Mini Truck show going on the West Coast, and this division always brings lots of excitement.
Other than a couple of moments when he's been forced to settle for second, Tom Davis has dominated to Mini Stock division. He's won most of the races, including Saturday night, and he appears to be headed for his third-straight championship. Davis isn't content to hang around Orland and has been to Susanville for four victories this year and also picked up a $500 paycheck in his visit to the Independence Day race at Hayfork. On Saturday night, Shasta competitor Dusty Hills made his first visit of the season in second ahead of past champion John Kirkpatrick, who is maintaining second in the standings.
Friday night will see the first big track championship come to a close as Silver Dollar Speedway at Chico, California has Pepsi Big Trophy Night. It's been interesting to watch the Sprint Car division, where the big guns probably would have been aced out of the championship. However, it cycled the back to them. It started when Chelsea Blevins picked up her first career win midway through the season and was the point leader. She surprisingly bailed out on a title that has meant much to some of the top Sprint Car racers through the years. Kyle Offill, who would go on to win a Main Event of his own, got the lead, but the lead is now in the hands of five-time champion Sean Becker in the Dan Menne owned car. Becker leads by 34 points over another past champion Andy Forsberg.
Also noteworthy in his efforts is Matt Micheli, who stands to win not one but two division championships this year. Matt holds a 26 point advantage over Richard Workman and his father, ageless veteran Ken Micheli. It's not likely that he will lose the lead unless mechanical issues force him to miss the Main Event. In the IMCA Sport Modified ranks, it seems almost a foregone conclusion that Micheli will win as Scott Savell entered the weekend activities 64 points behind. Depending on what happened in the Thursday show that the class ran in support of a King of the West Sprint Car race, Micheli might even be able to skip Friday in this class.
Perhaps the most interesting division to watch at the speedway has been the always exciting Hobby Stock class. Past champion Kyle Allen leads the charge by 35 points over James West, despite the fact that Allen has won eight Main Events this year. West has been somewhat consistent, but unless disaster strikes Allen, it's not likely that West could overtake him. The bigger question is, will Allen pick up his ninth-straight win to close the season? West has company behind him as Shannon Collins is 13 points back. The Hobby Stocks, along with the Sprint Cars, seem to be the MVP classes of the speedway this year.
